LIMA - Legal Issues in Museum Administration

Each Spring OGC co-sponsors a three-day course with the American Law Institute-Continuing Legal Education. LIMA is attended by non-attorneys and attorneys who work in museums.

The upcoming course will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 6-8, 2016, in Los Angeles at the Getty Center and Loews Hollywood Hotel. The planning committee has selected an outstanding faculty from museums, the entertainment industry, private practice, and higher education in order to provide a diversity of perspectives and lively presentations, and in-person attendance could not be more appealing.

James Cuno, President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, will deliver the keynote address on Wednesday afternoon at the Getty Center Los Angeles. The panels following Dr. Cuno’s keynote will address challenging yet common issues related to acquisitions, collections subject to rights restrictions, and proceeds from deaccessioning. The day concludes with a reception at the Getty Center. Transportation to and from the Getty will be provided at no additional charge. Wednesday morning’s offerings, which also will take place at the Getty, include sessions on rentals, film and television deals, and naming opportunities and other donor issues.

On Thursday we present the ever-popular annual updates on tax, legislation, and social media, as well as a session on legal ethics and professional responsibility. By overwhelming demand, the afternoon webcast will address diversity and inclusion within museum staff, while the concurrent sessions include perennial favorites like the interactive Ask the IP Lawyer and Ask the General Counsel (Almost) Anything, and "specialty" breakouts on artifact loans, copyright, institutional governance, and tax. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will host our reception on Thursday evening: transportation to and from the museum will be provided at no additional charge. On Friday we turn our attention to hot topics in the museum field, including sessions on cybersecurity and mobile technologies. David Nimmer, editor of the treatise Nimmer on Copyright, also will present his views on current topics in copyright.
