Three men have been arrested after allegedly leading police on a long high-speed police chase in a stolen Porsche - after stealing the car from Hawthorn star Brendan Whitecross' house.

The Porsche - taken from Whitecross' home in Croydon on Tuesday morning - was spotted in Dandenong, before fleeing down the emergency lane of the Monash Freeway while being pursued by police cars and a helicopter. It was finally dumped at The Glen Shopping Centre in Glen Waverley.

The three offenders tried to flee on foot, but were quickly arrested. Police believe a fourth offender may still be at large..

Whitecross told Channel 9 the early morning home invasion was "pretty scary".

"By the time the dogs started barking, the car was off so I didn't get a real good look at them… The adrenaline took over and I was straight down the stairs.

"They tried to get out of the front door, then basically Supermanned through the front window," he said.

Police earlier said a Porsche had been stolen in a robbery at The Range Boulevard in Croydon about 2.30am.

A pair of burglars entered a house and stole a set of keys to a Porsche Macan.

But they woke the family dog who started barking - startling the burglars and waking Whitecross and his fiancee.

The burglars fled, jumping into a dark-coloured getaway car that raced up the road.

But just as the victims thought they were safe, they watched the car pull a sharp U-turn and head back toward them.

One of the burglars jumped out, used the set of keys stolen from inside the home, and jumped into the front seat of the Whitecross' financee's Porsche Macan.

Both cars then raced away. Police later found the dark-coloured car, which had previously been reported as stolen, burnt out a short distance from the scene.

Police are asking anyone with more information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
