Making her acting debut in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968), she went on to appear in numerous successful Bollywood films, most notably those with actor and future-husband Dharmendra. Hema Malini was born in Ammangudi, Tamil Nadu, India to V.S.R. Chakravarty and Jaya Chakravarthy. Her mother was a film producer. She was initially promoted as "Dream Girl", and in 1977 starred in a film of the same name. During this period, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses, noted for both her comic and dramatic roles, and her accomplished classical dancing. Hema is one of the most successful female filmstars in the history of Indian cinema. Appearing in over 150 films in a career span of 40 years, she has starred in a large number of hit films, and her performances in both commercial and art house cinema, were often recognized. Hema Malini was educated at Chennai. She persisted and found her niche in Bollywood. She debuted in a 1968 film Sapnon Ka Saudagar ("The Dreamseller"), playing a young teen opposite the ageing superstar Raj Kapoor. With Dev Anand in Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star. She worked with him again in other films as well, with the latest being Aman Ke Farishtey (2003). Hema double-rolled with Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar in 1972s Seeta Aur Geeta as the top female star in Bollywood. She became one of the reigning divas of the Bollywood film industry, and her fans called her The Dream Girl of Bollywood. Hema starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamor, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra, and the duo performed a number of hit movies like Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train. In both films, she played a self-possessed, old married woman rather than the ingenuinee roles of her earlier career. She tried her hand at directing and made the 1992 film Dil Aashna Hai which featured an all-star cast including Shahrukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti. She also directed and starred in the TV serial Noopur, in which she was depicted as a Bharatanatyam dancer going to America. She is a dedicated Bharatanatyam artiste, a classical dance of India. Her two daughters have trained in the same dance form and the three have performed together at several charity dance concerts. Top Bollywood stars like Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra proposed to her, but she married Dharmendra on 2 May 1980. Dharmendra, who was already married to Prakash Kaur, and had two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, could not marry Hema as Prakash refused to divorce him. According to the Hindu Marriage Act. Both of them converted to Islam - and married under that civil code, rather than waiting for Dharmendra's divorce to come through. Three years after their marriage, Hema subsequently gave birth to two daughters: Esha Deol (born 1982) and Ahana Deol. Her daughter Esha is an accomplished classical dancer.

Hema Malini was the second South Indian actress after Vyjayanthimala to be a major Hindi film star. At her peak she wielded such strong commercial clout that actors like Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to give them that much wanted hit. When Dev Anand's films in the 70s particularly those with Zeenat Aman crashed, Ameer Gareeb (1974) with Hema Malini was a hit. When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life. She began her career opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar (1968) where the posters splashed her picture with the catch phrase - 'Dreamgirl.' The film flopped but Hema survived. With Waaris (1969) and Johny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and with Seeta aur Geeta (1972), where she showed splendid comic timing and perfectly played, both the timid Seeta and bindaas Geeta , she became the the top female star in Hindi filmdom. A string of successful films particularly opposite Dharmendra (Raja Jani (1972), Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975)) followed as Hema's stock only went higher and higher. Though critics have dismissed her as generally a one-note actress, to be fair to her she did occasionally show that she could give a performance of much depth were she directed properly. As Raaj Kumar's scheming mistress in Lal Patthar (1971) she not only made the audience empathize with her negative character but also stole a march over no less an actress than Rakhee! She dared to convincingly play a young widow in Andaaz (1971) , a role turned down by most actresses. She tried to change her glamorous image by working with Gulzar and did some of her best and perhaps most introspective work in his films - Khushboo (1975), Kinara (1977) and Meera (1979). Re-uniting with Ramesh Sippy after Andaaz and Seeta aur Geeta, she showed her comic timing and versatilty once again in Sholay where she is spot on as the talkative Basanti. Hema starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamour, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra, and the duo performed a number of hit movies like Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train. She also achieved some strong dramatic or comic moments in films like Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Meera, Khushboo and Kinara. On the personal front, Hema had her share of admirers. Both Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar proposed marriage to her but it was Dharmendra who wooed and won her. She flouted convention by becoming his second wife and having children by him but so strong was her morally upright image that she was able to go through the marriage without being slandered by press or public. After ruling the world of Hindi cinema right through the 1970s, by the early to mid 80s her reign was coming to an end with Rekha having taken her place. She concentrated on her dance performances and turned to playing strong characters with feminist undertones on both film and TV, in fact ,giving a finely modulated performance in Rihaee (1988) as a woman who has an affair when her husband is away and has another man's child. She has dabbled in other channels of film production having produced Swami (1977), Sharara (1984), Aawargi (1987) and Marg (1992 but unreleased) besides directing Dil Aashna Hai (1991) and Mohini (1994) for Television. She was still seen in the occasional film (Hey Ram (2000)) even as she concentrated on helping elder daughter Esha try to make her mark as an actress. Hema made a remarkable return to the screen in Ravi Chopra's Baghban (2003) opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The two of them scored heavily playing an elderly couple split up and made to suffer by their inconsiderate children. What's more, she looked absolutely ravishing. Her subsequent films have seen her paired mainly opposite Bachchan only - Veer Zara (2004), Baabul (2006) and the Bhojpuri film Ganga. Hema Malini has also directed the TV serials Noopur (1990) and Women of India (1996). She has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for her contribution to Indian Cinema.

It went on to become a Boxoffice "Superhit" becoming the second highest grossing film of 1973. It had great songs, most notably the Diwali song picturised beautifully on Dharmendra and Sung by Kishore Kumar, "Deep Diwali ke Jhute". The song became a Runaway Hit going on to become an all-time a Chart-Buster of its time. Another notable feature of the film is the Popular dialogue written by Sachin Bhowmick, "Baap ka sarahe amjhe, Kaamsoor rothe hai", Meaning: "Only the weak seek to be known by their fathers" which was said on two occasions by Dharmendra and Pran. It went on to become one of the most loved and famous dialogues of all-time in Hindi cinema. Jugnu Remains a cult classic of Hindi cinema and represents one of Dharmendra's Finest performances.

When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life. She began her career opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar (1968) where the posters splashed her picture with the catch phrase - 'Dreamgirl.' The film flopped but Hema survived. With Waaris (1969) and Johny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and with Seeta aur Geeta (1972), where she showed splendid comic timing and perfectly played, both the timid Seeta and bindaas Geeta , she became the the top female star in Hindi filmdom. A string of successful films particularly opposite Dharmendra (Raja Jani (1972), Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975)) followed as Hema's stock only went higher and higher. Though critics have dismissed her as generally a one-note actress, to be fair to her she did occasionally show that she could give a performance of much depth were she directed properly. As Raaj Kumar's scheming mistress in Lal Patthar (1971) she not only made the audience empathize with her negative character but also stole a march over no less an actress than Rakhee! She dared to convincingly play a young widow in Andaaz (1971) , a role turned down by most actresses. She tried to change her glamorous image by working with Gulzar and did some of her best and perhaps most introspective work in his films - Khushboo (1975), Kinara (1977) and Meera (1979). Re-uniting with Ramesh Sippy after Andaaz and Seeta aur Geeta, she showed her comic timing and versatilty once again in Sholay where she is spot on as the talkative Basanti. Hema starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamour, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra, and the duo performed a number of hit movies like Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train. She also achieved some strong dramatic or comic moments in films like Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Meera, Khushboo and Kinara. On the personal front, Hema had her share of admirers. Both Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar proposed marriage to her but it was Dharmendra who wooed and won her. She flouted convention by becoming his second wife and having children by him but so strong was her morally upright image that she was able to go through the marriage without being slandered by press or public. After ruling the world of Hindi cinema right through the 1970s, by the early to mid 80s her reign was coming to an end with Rekha having taken her place. She concentrated on her dance performances and turned to playing strong characters with feminist undertones on both film and TV, in fact ,giving a finely modulated performance in Rihaee (1988) as a woman who has an affair when her husband is away and has another man's child. She has dabbled in other channels of film production having produced Swami (1977), Sharara (1984), Aawargi (1987) and Marg (1992 but unreleased) besides directing Dil Aashna Hai (1991) and Mohini (1994) for Television. She was still seen in the occasional film (Hey Ram (2000)) even as she concentrated on helping elder daughter Esha try to make her mark as an actress. Hema made a remarkable return to the screen in Ravi Chopra's Baghban (2003) opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The two of them scored heavily playing an elderly couple split up and made to suffer by their inconsiderate children. What's more, she looked absolutely ravishing. Her subsequent films have seen her paired mainly opposite Bachchan only - Veer Zara (2004), Baabul (2006) and the Bhojpuri film Ganga. Hema Malini has also directed the TV serials Noopur (1990) and Women of India (1996). She has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for her contribution to Indian Cinema.

Hema Malini (born 16 October 1948) is an Indian actress, director and producer, as well as a Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer. Hema Malini was the second South Indian actress after Vyjayanthimala to be a major Hindi film star. At her peak she wielded such strong commercial clout that actors like Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to give them that much wanted hit. When Dev Anand's films in the 70s particularly those with Zeenat Aman crashed, Ameer Gareeb (1974) with Hema Malini was a hit. When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life. She began her career opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar (1968) where the posters splashed her picture with the catch phrase - 'Dreamgirl.' The film flopped but Hema survived. With Waaris (1969) and Johny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and with Seeta aur Geeta (1972), where she showed splendid comic timing and perfectly played, both the timid Seeta and bindaas Geeta , she became the the top female star in Hindi filmdom. She was still seen in the occasional film (Hey Ram (2000)) even as she concentrated on helping elder daughter Esha try to make her mark as an actress. Hema made a remarkable return to the screen in Ravi Chopra's Baghban (2003) opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The two of them scored heavily playing an elderly couple split up and made to suffer by their inconsiderate children. What's more, she looked absolutely ravishing. Her subsequent films have seen her paired mainly opposite Bachchan only - Veer Zara (2004), Baabul (2006) and the Bhojpuri film Ganga. Hema Malini (born 16 October 1948) is an Indian actress, director and producer, as well as a Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer. Making her acting debut in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968), she went on to appear in numerous successful Bollywood films, most notably those with actor and future-husband Dharmendra. Hema Malini was born in Ammangudi, Tamil Nadu, India to V.S.R. Chakravarty and Jaya Chakravarthy. Her mother was a film producer. She was initially promoted as "Dream Girl", and in 1977 starred in a film of the same name. During this period, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses, noted for both her comic and dramatic roles, and her accomplished classical dancing. Hema is one of the most successful female filmstars in the history of Indian cinema. Appearing in over 150 films in a career span of 40 years, she has starred in a large number of hit films, and her performances in both commercial and art house cinema, were often recognized. Hema Malini was educated at Chennai. She persisted and found her niche in Bollywood. She debuted in a 1968 film Sapnon Ka Saudagar ("The Dreamseller"), playing a young teen opposite the ageing superstar Raj Kapoor. With Dev Anand in Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star. She worked with him again in other films as well, with the latest being Aman Ke Farishtey (2003). Hema double-rolled with Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar in 1972s Seeta Aur Geeta as the top female star in Bollywood. She became one of the reigning divas of the Bollywood film industry, and her fans called her The Dream Girl of Bollywood. Hema starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamor, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra, and the duo performed a number of hit movies like Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train. She also achieved some strong dramatic or comic moments in films like Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Meera, Khushboo and Kinara. After taking a long break from films for a number of years in the 1990s and early 2000s, Hema has recently made a comeback of sorts. She co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan in the successful film Baghban (2003), and played a cameo role (also opposite Bachchan) in the 2004 blockbuster Veer-Zaara. In both films, she played a self-possessed, old married woman rather than the ingenuinee roles of her earlier career. She tried her hand at directing and made the 1992 film Dil Aashna Hai which featured an all-star cast including Shahrukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti. She also directed and starred in the TV serial Noopur, in which she was depicted as a Bharatanatyam dancer going to America. She is a dedicated Bharatanatyam artiste, a classical dance of India. Her two daughters have trained in the same dance form and the three have performed together at several charity dance concerts. Top Bollywood stars like Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra proposed to her, but she married Dharmendra on 2 May 1980. Dharmendra, who was already married to Prakash Kaur, and had two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, could not marry Hema as Prakash refused to divorce him. According to the Hindu Marriage Act. Both of them converted to Islam - and married under that civil code, rather than waiting for Dharmendra's divorce to come through. Three years after their marriage, Hema subsequently gave birth to two daughters: Esha Deol (born 1982) and Ahana Deol. Her daughter Esha is an accomplished classical dancer.

Hema Malini was the second South Indian actress after Vyjayanthimala to be a major Hindi film star. At her peak she wielded such strong commercial clout that actors like Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to give them that much wanted hit. When Dev Anand's films in the 70s particularly those with Zeenat Aman crashed, Ameer Gareeb (1974) with Hema Malini was a hit. When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life. She began her career opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapnon ka Saudagar (1968) where the posters splashed her picture with the catch phrase - 'Dreamgirl.' The film flopped but Hema survived. With Waaris (1969) and Johny Mera Naam (1970), Hema became a top star and with Seeta aur Geeta (1972), where she showed splendid comic timing and perfectly played, both the timid Seeta and bindaas Geeta , she became the the top female star in Hindi filmdom. A string of successful films particularly opposite Dharmendra (Raja Jani (1972), Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975)) followed as Hema's stock only went higher and higher. Though critics have dismissed her as generally a one-note actress, to be fair to her she did occasionally show that she could give a performance of much depth were she directed properly. As Raaj Kumar's scheming mistress in Lal Patthar (1971) she not only made the audience empathize with her negative character but also stole a march over no less an actress than Rakhee! She dared to convincingly play a young widow in Andaaz (1971) , a role turned down by most actresses. She tried to change her glamorous image by working with Gulzar and did some of her best and perhaps most introspective work in his films - Khushboo (1975), Kinara (1977) and Meera (1979). Re-uniting with Ramesh Sippy after Andaaz and Seeta aur Geeta, she showed her comic timing and versatilty once again in Sholay where she is spot on as the talkative Basanti. Hema starred in many movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is perhaps best remembered for her glamour, style, and accomplished classical dancing. She formed a hit pair with Dharmendra, and the duo performed a number of hit movies like Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train. She also achieved some strong dramatic or comic moments in films like Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Meera, Khushboo and Kinara. On the personal front, Hema had her share of admirers. Both Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar proposed marriage to her but it was Dharmendra who wooed and won her. She flouted convention by becoming his second wife and having children by him but so strong was her morally upright image that she was able to go through the marriage without being slandered by press or public. After ruling the world of Hindi cinema right through the 1970s, by the early to mid 80s her reign was coming to an end with Rekha having taken her place. She concentrated on her dance performances and turned to playing strong characters with feminist undertones on both film and TV, in fact ,giving a finely modulated performance in Rihaee (1988) as a woman who has an affair when her husband is away and has another man's child. She has dabbled in other channels of film production having produced Swami (1977), Sharara (1984), Aawargi (1987) and Marg (1992 but unreleased) besides directing Dil Aashna Hai (1991) and Mohini (1994) for Television. She was still seen in the occasional film (Hey Ram (2000)) even as she concentrated on helping elder daughter Esha try to make her mark as an actress. Hema made a remarkable return to the screen in Ravi Chopra's Baghban (2003) opposite Amitabh Bachchan. The two of them scored heavily playing an elderly couple split up and made to suffer by their inconsiderate children. What's more, she looked absolutely ravishing. Her subsequent films have seen her paired mainly opposite Bachchan only - Veer Zara (2004), Baabul (2006) and the Bhojpuri film Ganga. Hema Malini has also directed the TV serials Noopur (1990) and Women of India (1996). She has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for her contribution to Indian Cinema.

Jugnu is a 1973 Indian Hindi movie produced and directed by Pramod Chakravorty. It went on to become a box-office "Superhit" becoming the second highest grossing film of 1973.
