The inaugural CRY 104FM "Person of the Year 2015" ceremony took place at The Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal, on Friday 29th January 2016. Presenter Ruth Hayes caught up with the nominees for a brief chat at the awards ceremony. Thanks to the management and staff of The Walter Raleigh Hotel for their courtesy during filming this event. Well done to Jordan McCarthy for coordinating the event for the 12 months which was not an easy task and to Linda Carroll and Pat Carroll for their work on the project. The Judges Mick Sheehan (CRY104fm), Siobhan Sheehan (Youghal Chamber of Tourism and Commerce), Aileen Murray, (Youghal Socio Economic Development Group - YSEDG) Padraig Hennessy (Clancy's Bar). The winner receives a night two night break in the Kenmare Park Hotel. The Nominees were: Bobby Lee Bobby picked up the award in January for his wonderful work with the young people of Youghal. This includes the Roots project, where local budding musicians featured on a covers CD. This, among other projects which Bobby has developed, gives young musicians a platform on which to perform. Bobby has a great way with the youth and is a really popular guy. Catherine Desmond Catherine’s work with Youghal Heritage has helped to promote the town to a wider audience. She has been a key player in the area’s development and also helped to establish the Youghal Medieval festival. Catherine was an important player in the RTE Nationwide episode on Youghal, too. Davy Russell The Youghal man was again in the winners’ enclosure at the Cheltenham festival in March. Davy is a great ambassador for the town of Youghal. He is also pivotal to the Donkey Derby held here, bringing well known sports personalities to the area all in aid of the Queen of the Sea festival. Brendan Cooney Brendan is a key member at the Youghal CYMS snooker club. He has dedicated a lot of time and effort to the sport in Youghal and beyond. His excellent coaching skills have reaped rewards in recent years as the club has produced some of the best young snooker players in the country. A great ambassador for Youghal, Brendan has been central to the clubs development. Paul Landers Paul is a member of the Meals on Wheels service in Youghal. A dedicated volunteer, he helps to deliver meals to the elderly daily. Paul really goes about his work without anybody knowing and he is a crucial part of the Meals On Wheels team. Matron & Staff at Youghal Hospital Many families of Youghal have witnessed the heroic-like efforts that the Matron and staff at Youghal Hospital do, day in and day out. Working to make people better, they go above and beyond for their patients. Sean Coleman Sean won two silver medals at the Special Olympics World Games in LA last summer. The Gortroe native has competed at national and international level for the past number of years. He is an extremely talented swimmer and is a great character. Youghal Celebrates History Youghal’s future lies in its past. The local group celebrates the rich history of Youghal and the surrounding areas. Its members are really enthusiastic about the town’s unique heritage and celebrate it through annual conferences held in the locality. John Quill John played for the USA at the Rugby World Cup. The Youghal man qualifies to play for the Eagles through his mother who is American-born. John featured for his side in World Cup Poole matches which included a clash with the mighty Springboks. Tadhg DeBurca Tadhg is one of the most exciting young talents in Hurling. The Clashmore/Kinsalebeg clubman put in some outstanding efforts for the Waterford Senior Hurlers in 2015. Those performances led to him picking up an All Star. He also has a League winner’s medal to his name and the defender is rated highly among his peers. Ned Brennan Ned is a member of several community groups. A former mayor of the town, he plays a huge role in the Tidy Towns committee. 2015 saw Youghal score its highest points total ever in the competition. Ned is also a leader of the local Scout group. Patrick McCarthy Patrick is a key member of the Youghal Community First Responders, who provide a huge service to the area. From training up new members to putting his knowledge as a paramedic into practice, he is a wonderful servant to the community. 'Mac', is extremely passionate about his way of life, and goes beyond the call of duty time and again.
