Muslim Mahammad oglu Magomayev (Azerbaijani: Müslüm Məhəmməd oğlu Maqomayev, August 17, 1942 – October 25, 2008), dubbed the "King of Songs" and the "Soviet Sinatra" was a Soviet and Azerbaijani baritone operatic and pop singer of the 1960s and 1970s. He achieved iconic status in Russia and the post-Soviet countries, including his native Azerbaijan, for his vocal talent and charisma.
Muslim Magomayev represented one of the most respected artistic dynasties in Azerbaijan. His grandfather Muslim Magomayev (1885–1937), a friend and contemporary of the prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, was one of the founders of modern Azerbaijani classical music. Magomayev's father, Mahammad Magomayev, who died two days prior to the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II while serving as a soldier in the Soviet Army, was a gifted scenic designer; and his mother, Aishet Kinzhalova, was an actress. Magomayev's father was of mixed origin whose parents moved to Azerbaijan from Chechnya and Georgia respectively, whereas his Adyghean-born mother was of mixed Turkish, Adyghe and Russian descent. However, when asked about his ethnicity, Magomayev considered himself Azerbaijani.
Muslim Mahammad oglu Magomayev (Azerbaijani: Müslüm Maqomayev) (18 September 1885, Grozny – 28 July 1937, Nalchik) was an Azerbaijani and Soviet composer and conductor. He is the grandfather and a namesake of Azerbaijani opera singer Muslim Magomayev.
He was born Abdulmuslim Magomayev into a family of a blacksmith on the same day another prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov was born. He had studied at a primary school in Grozny before being admitted to the Gori Pedagogical Seminary (in present-day Georgia) in 1900. There Magomayev developed passion for music and conducting. That was also where he first met Uzeyir Hajibeyov, then his fellow student. However Magomayev found musical career financially unpromising and decided to focus on teaching. In 1905, he acquired his teaching certificate at the Tiflis Teachers' College and was appointed a teacher to the village of Bekovichi (now Kizlyar, Republic of North Ossetia–Alania). In 1906, he was voluntarily reappointed to Lankaran (present-day Azerbaijan). In 1911, he received a license that allowed him to teach in high schools and moved to a Baku suburb, Sabunchu. While teaching at a school he took up music and conducting once again.

This is an instrumental arrangement of the Frank Sinatra standard by the multi-talented Russian performer Muslim Magomayev. He is not only a singer, he is a composer, pianist, painter, and writer as well. Yet, he is a humble man, well worthy of our respect as human being, not only as an artist. It is my tribute to my favourite Russian pop performer. In Russia, unlike America, there is much crossover between the pop and classical worlds. Muslim has done opera, and the opera star Dmitri Khvorostovsky has done pop. This makes for a richer cultural life. The photos are of Muslim and his family. We are the richer for their presence amongst us. The life of Muslim Magomayev illustrates why I oppose extreme nationalists. He was able to expand his horizons because he was part of the Empire.
