An Adelaide man who allegedly abused his power of attorney to steal more than $200,000 from an elderly couple has been arrested and charged with fraud offences.

Police alleged the 67-year-old Bellevue Heights man obtained the money from a man, 89, and a woman, 90, through electronic transfer.

They also alleged he produced a fake will in an attempt to obtain the woman's estate.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of dishonest exploitation of advantage and one count of dishonestly dealing with documents after his alleged actions were reported by the Office of the Public Trustee.

He has been refused bail and will face court on Monday.

Police urged the community to be vigilant and cautious when granting a power of attorney.

"[Police] recommend that any appointment of this type should go to a person or organisation who you personally trust and with who you can communicate and make your financial wishes clear," a spokesperson said.
