A man who threatened police with a gun before fleeing on foot remains at large in rural South Australia.

Police said Copper Triangle man Conan Taylor, 36, was driving outside Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula when they pulled him over at traffic stop about 8:00pm Thursday.

He allegedly threatened police with a firearm before running away.

Police have not been able to find Mr Taylor despite a search by Star Group officers and the police helicopter.

Superintendent Scott Denny said the public should be on alert.

"We don't want to over-alarm the public but at this stage we believe he may still be in possession of the firearm," he said.

"I will say there has been no threat to the community.

"It's an allegation that he threatened police with the firearm, however, people should certainly be cautious and not approach this man."

Mr Taylor is described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and 190 centimetres tall.
