Rapid City may refer to the following places:
The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company (reporting mark CNW) was a Class I railroad in the Midwest United States. It was also known as the North Western. The railroad operated more than 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of track as of the turn of the 20th century, and over 12,000 miles (19,000 km) of track in seven states before retrenchment in the late 1970s. Until 1972, when the company was sold to its employees, it was named the Chicago and North Western Railway. The C&NW became one of the longest railroads in the US as a result of mergers with other railroads, such as the Chicago Great Western Railway, Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway and others. By 1995, track sales and abandonment had reduced the total mileage back to about 5,000. The majority of the abandoned and sold lines were lightly trafficked branches in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Large line sales, such as those that resulted in the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad further helped reduce the railroad to a mainline core with several regional feeders and branches. The company was purchased by Union Pacific Railroad in April 1995 and ceased to exist.
In March, 1994 I had to make a visit to Rapid City, SD on family business. I did manage to squeeze in a bit of railfanning. I caught the Rapid City switch engine in charge of GP7 4169 as well as an inbound and outbound road freight on the Colony, Wyoming line. At this point the Colony Line and the Rapid City trackage were isolated from the rest of the CNW system account the sale of the Winona-Rapid City line to Dakota Minnesota & Eastern. After the CNW-UP merger it only took UP a year to sell these lines to the DM&E; also.
A not too bad assortment of power that day. Some recently delivered C44-9Ws are being marshaled around.Should have went on a weekday,we would have received a release form to tour the facility. The CNW detective could not find anyone with one.
After the CNW Alco C628's were retired in Marquette Range ore service, we visited the area in 1988, 1989 and 1992. Interesting to note is the change from 3 SD40-2's to 2 SD50's or GE's between 1988 and 89. We did a slow drive by of the stored 628's at Escanaba yard. It was a holiday and nobody was around Wouldn't even think about doing this today.

In September of 1990, I took a 4 day weekend railfaining trip to Chicago. In the afternoon of Monday September 10th, I rode the Metra's C&NW; Northwest line from Park Ridge into the Loop. This was filmed from the lower level, left hand side of the lead car. The video starts at the Edison Park stop. 01:42 Norwood Park 03:48 Jefferson Park 06:58 Irving Park 10:15 Clyborn 14:05 Clinton St Tower 15:16 Lake St Tower

Ohh...ohhh take it take it all away
ohh...ohhh take my breath away
ohh...ohhh you take my breath away
Look into my eyes and you'll see I'm the only one.
You've captured my love, stolen my heart,
changed my life.
Every time you make a move you destroy my mind.
And the way you touch I lose control and shiver deep inside.
You take my breath away
You can reduce me to tears with a single sigh
(please don't cry anymore)
every breath that you take, any sound that you make is a whisper in my ear
I could give up all my life for just one kiss
I would surly die, if you dismissed me from your love
You take my breath away
So please don't go
Don't leave me here all by myself
I get ever so lonely from time to time
I will find you anywhere you go
I'll be right behind you
right until the ends of the earth
I'll get no sleep till I find you
to tell you that you just take my breath away
I will find you anywhere you go...ohhh
right until the ends of the earth
I'll get no sleep till I find you
to tell you when I found you
I love you.
(Anymore)
