Remarkable image of the Thunderbirds taken when the team flew with the F-4 Phantom

Tom Demerly's photo.

Mr. Huseyin Balta shared this remarkable photo of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds from the era when they flew demonstrations in the F-4 Phantom II. The aircraft... are extremely low and inbound toward the crowd line, something we don't see too much in airshows anymore mostly as a result of the 1988 Rammstein Air Force Base airshow disaster, when an Italian flight demonstration team crashed into the crowd killing 67 spectators. Even after the U.S. flight demonstration teams adopted stricter safety flight demonstration regulations other countries continued dangerous practices. One led to the worst airshow disaster in history at Sknyliv in Lviv, Ukraine in 2002 with 77 fatalities.
