Toyota has provided a sneak peek at the first Toyota Camry to be fully-imported to Australia in 30 years.
The Japanese car maker has started the strip tease for its next-generation family car, revealing an teaser image and confirmation it will be fully revealed at the 2017 Detroit motor show to be held in January.
Despite rolling out a major makeover for the current Camry in 2015, Toyota is keen to keep up momentum for its medium sedan, which is a top-seller in the North American market, as well as dominating the medium car segment in Australia.
The timing also aligns well with Toyota Australia's planned local production shutdown which is scheduled for the end of 2017, after which the Camry will become a fully-imported model - likely to arrive in Australia from its Thailand plant.
The initial image shows a tightly cropped shot of the taillight and C-pillar, and reveals a few interesting details about the next Camry's form, the most obvious of which is an ornamental vent which continues the tail light detail beyond the boundaries of the light housing and deep into the rear bumper.
Also clearly visible is a feature line which starts mid-way through the C-pillar and forms the upper edge of the bootlid, giving the impression of a shortened rear deck. The flagship spec (for the US) XSE model shown also flaunts LED tail lights, a rear lip spoiler, and large machined-face alloy wheels.
Toyota USA has previously given a glimpse of the front end design of the new Camry as previewed by its NASCAR racer, which showed a spindle-like lower grille that follows the form established as part of the Lexus design language.

1st imported Camry in 30 years is incorrect. In June 1988, the 2.5-liter V6 was introduced, being an imported fully optioned model from Japan sold in limited numbers and distinguished from local four-cylinder cars by its unique bumpers and trim. This ran until about 1988-89. Less than 30 years ago. Also the 1st gen Camry was fully imported from 1982-1986.

Be afraid, be very afraid Mr FWD Commodore. As the current Camry has been out selling you lately.

I believe the the V6 is replaced by turbo four worldwide for Camry/Aurion which is a shame as the V6 is a sweet engine.

What's more important is the drivetrain. We all know that Toyotas, especially the four cylinder models, have engines and transmissions that are years behind their competition. The Corolla, for instance, is still making do with a 1.8L engine with very little power and torque, while competitors are all offering much better donks. Camry is the same. We know the styling is likely to be horrible, because Toyota don't design attractive cars. So it's highly likely we'll continue to see these underpowered, ugly mobiles driving 10+ km/hr under the speed limit, and frustrating the hell out of other drivers.
