Bangarang on Original JA Lee
In late 1968, Lester cut his signature tune "Bangarang." Another Jamaican #1, and hailed as a first Reggae, Ill let Lester tell it. "Well the first part and the inspiration for Bangarang, I make up the bridge, came from Kenny Dorhams Bongo Chant. Me and Rico used to play it from the late 50s when it was on the sound systems. I get the idea from this woman and her daughter. The daughter emigrate to America and then I think she encourage the mother to leave me and emigrate too."
Backup vocals are by Wilburn "Stranger" Cole, Lloyd "Charmers" Tyrell, and Maxwell "Romeo" Smith. There are hundreds, if not thousands of versions of Bangarang, including those by Soul Vendors, Lord Creator, Nitty Gritty, Brigadier Jerry, Lt. Stitchie, and Dillinger.
At the start of Stir It Up! A tv program broadcast by Englands Channel 4 in 1994, producer Bunny Lee is in his Burns Avenue studio in Kingston. Lee picks up a 1/4 inch tape and begins, "Yeah, I want to tell everybody, the whole world, this is the first Reggae tune that was done in Jamaica, see it? It was done in 1968 in Duke Reids studio. I want to play it and mek the whole world hear, Muma no want no Bangarang. It was Lester Sterling, Lloyd Charmers and Stranger Coleis really the emphasis on the organ. Mek the organ go Reggae, Reggaethis is the great Bangarang." In the 1982 video production Deeper Roots, also by Channel 4, Lee notes, "same like in the Reggae ting, is a man just bawl out one day, we were having a session, say, make the organ go Reggae, Reggae and the name. Everybody claims the name and they dont even know how it start, right."

This is a rare session bringing together three jazz icons, Lester Young (tenor tax) Nat King Cole (piano) and Buddy Rich (drums) for the Gershwin classic, 'Somebody Loves Me'. It was recorded in Los Angeles in December 1945.
I love Lester Young's playing, particularly on this song. His tone is so mellow, and his lines are straightforward but sophisticated, without being 'busy' like some sax players. Nat King Cole is his usual brilliant self on piano, perfect accompaniment for Lester, often with left hand bass lines being played (there is no bass player on this session). This was before he became famous as a singer. Finally, one of the best drummers of all time, Buddy Rich, although to my ears, his playing could have been brought forward a bit more in the mix.
There is no video of this session. So I have put together a slideshow to try and simulate what it must have been like to hear them play together.

Lester Cole
Lester Cole (June 19, 1904 - August 15, 1985) was an American screenwriter.
Born in New York City, Lester Cole began his career as an actor but soon turned to screenwriting. His first work was "If I had a Million." In 1933, he joined with John Howard Lawson and Samuel Ornitz to establish the Writers Guild of America.
In 1934, Cole joined the American Communist Party. He became one of the Hollywood Ten, who refused to answer questions before the House Committee on Un-American Activities about their Communist Party membership. Cole was convicted of contempt of Congress, fined $1,000 and sentenced to twelve months confinement at the Federal Correctional Institution at Danbury, Connecticut, of which he served ten months.
As a result of his refusal to testify, Cole was blacklisted. Between 1932 and 1947 Cole wrote more than forty screenplays that were made into motion pictures. After his blacklisting, just three screenplays were made into films, only after friends, and wife Gerald L.C. Copley, Lewis Copley, and J. Redmond Prior, submitted the screenplays under their names.

Lester Sterling
Lester Sterling OD (born 31 January 1936), also known as Lester "Ska" Sterling or Mr. Versatile, is a Jamaican trumpet and saxophone player.
Biography
Like many Jamaican musicians of his generation, Sterling attended the Alpha Boys School. Originally a trumpeter, he is predominantly known as a player of alto saxophone. He was a member of the Jamaica Military Band in the 1950s and played trumpet in Val Bennett's band in 1957. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Sterling played regularly as a studio musician, along with most of the future Skatalites members, in bands such as Clue J & His Blues Blasters.
Sterling is a founding member of The Skatalites (playing alto saxophone), one of only two (the other is Doreen Shaffer) still alive. After The Skatalites originally disbanded in 1965, Sterling played with Byron Lee & the Dragonaires and recorded several solo singles for the London-based producer "Sir" Clancy Collins. His debut solo album, Bangarang, was released on Pama Records in 1969. Sterling rejoined the Skatalites when they reformed in 1975. The band have continued on and off with a varying line-up since, and Sterling is the only founding member still with the band. Sterling was awarded the Order of Distinction in 1998 in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music. Sterling's brother is keyboard player Keith Sterling. Lester Sterling the only living foundation member of the original Skatalites band was honored by the USA chapter of JAVAA - "JAVAA USA.ORG" at their first awards ceremony held in Brooklyn New York in April 2013. That event was launched under the distinguished patronage of the consulate general of Jamaica Mr. LaMont, Mr Sterling was given a pioneers awards in the field of music for his contribution since nineteen sixty four and continues to doing it.

Coel Hen
Coel (Old Welsh: Coil) or Coel Hen ("Coel the Old") is a figure prominent in Welsh literature and legend since the Middle Ages. Early Welsh tradition knew of a Coel Hen (Coel the Old), a leader in Roman or Sub-Roman Britain and the progenitor of several kingly lines in the Hen Ogledd ("the Old North"), the Brittonic-speaking part of northern England and southern Scotland. Later medieval legend told of a Coel, apparently derived from Coel Hen, who was the father of Saint Helena and the grandfather of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Other similarly named characters may be confused or conflated with the Welsh Coel. Name
Coel's name was rendered "Coil" in Old Welsh. It may be related to the common noun coel, meaning "belief or omen". Coel is often named as "Coel Hen", Hen being an epithet Hen meaning "old" (i.e., "Coel the Old"). The genealogies give him an additional epithet, Godebog (Old Welsh: Guotepauc), meaning "Protector" or "Shelterer". His name is thus sometimes given as "Coel Godebog" or "Coel Hen Godebog". However, some of the Harleian genealogies list Godebog as Coel's father's name.Geoffrey of Monmouth Latinized the name to Coelus. Some modern authors modernize it to "Cole".

Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He was widely noted for his soft, baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres, becoming a major force in popular music for three decades. Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a national television variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death from lung cancer in February 1965.
Early life
Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 17, 1919. Cole had three brothers: Eddie (1910–1970), Ike (1927–2001), and Freddy (born 1931), and a half-sister, Joyce Coles. Each of Cole's brothers would later pursue careers in music as well. When Cole was four years old, he and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where his father, Edward Coles, became a Baptist minister. Cole learned to play the organ from his mother, Perlina Coles, the church organist. His first performance was of "Yes! We Have No Bananas" at age four. He began formal lessons at 12, eventually learning not only jazz and gospel music, but also Western classical music, performing, as he said, "from Johann Sebastian Bach to Sergei Rachmaninoff".

Backup vocals are by Wilburn "Stranger" Cole, Lloyd "Charmers" Tyrell, and Maxwell "Romeo" Smith. There are hundreds, if not thousands of versions of Bangarang, including those by Soul Vendors, Lord Creator, Nitty Gritty, Brigadier Jerry, Lt. Stitchie, and Dillinger.
At the start of Stir It Up! A tv program broadcast by Englands Channel 4 in 1994, producer Bunny Lee is in his Burns Avenue studio in Kingston. Lee picks up a 1/4 inch tape and begins, "Yeah, I want to tell everybody, the whole world, this is the first Reggae tune that was done in Jamaica, see it? It was done in 1968 in Duke Reids studio. I want to play it and mek the whole world hear, Muma no want no Bangarang. It was Lester Sterling, Lloyd Charmers and Stranger Coleis really the emphasis on the organ. Mek the organ go Reggae, Reggaethis is the great Bangarang." In the 1982 video production Deeper Roots, also by Channel 4, Lee notes, "same like in the Reggae ting, is a man just bawl out one day, we were having a session, say, make the organ go Reggae, Reggae and the name. Everybody claims the name and they dont even know how it start, right."

This is a rare session bringing together three jazz icons, Lester Young (tenor tax) Nat King Cole (piano) and Buddy Rich (drums) for the Gershwin classic, 'Somebody Loves Me'. It was recorded in Los Angeles in December 1945.
I love Lester Young's playing, particularly on this song. His tone is so mellow, and his lines are straightforward but sophisticated, without being 'busy' like some sax players. Nat King Cole is his usual brilliant self on piano, perfect accompaniment for Lester, often with left hand bass lines being played (there is no bass player on this session). This was before he became famous as a singer. Finally, one of the best drummers of all time, Buddy Rich, although to my ears, his playing could have been brought forward a bit more in the mix.
There is no video of this session. So I have put together a slideshow to try and simulate what it must have been like to hear them play together.

While not having heard of Cappy Ricks before this, I'm guessing after looking on ebay that he was a fairly well-known book character in the early 20th. Brennan goes full steam as the curmudgeonly "old salt shaker" who stubbornly resists the encroachment of technology and is horrified on returning home and finding his daughter's future mother-in-law running his house and business and poised to merge his company with rival Bottomley, a purveyor of all things automated! Cappy launches a counter plot to set things straight, giving the story the bulk of its humorous situations. The highlight is the segment aboard the ELECTRA, Bottomley's almost completely automated yacht, particularly the scene with the push-button spice dispensers. The silly plot is served well by nice performances by Brennan, Georgia Caine, Frank Shields, and perky, attractive Mary Brian as Frankie. And the film itself foreshadows The Jetsons and Gilligan's Island 25 years before those shows made us roar with laughter (?)

Born Free is a 1966 Technicolor British drama film starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, a real-life couple who raised Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lion cub, to adulthood, and released her into the wilderness of Kenya. The movie was produced by Open Road Films Ltd. and Columbia Pictures. The screenplay, written by blacklisted Hollywood writer Lester Cole (under the pseudonym "Gerald L.C. Copley"), was based upon Joy Adamson's 1960 non-fiction book Born Free. The film was directed by James Hill and produced by Sam Jaffe and Paul Radin. Born Free, and its musical score by John Barry, won numerous awards.
When George Adamson is forced to kill a lioness out of self-defense, he brings home the 3 orphaned cubs she had been trying to protect. The Adamsons tend to the three orphaned lion cubs to young lionhood, and, when the time comes, the two largest are sent to the Rotterdam Zoo, while Elsa the Lioness (the smallest of the litter) remains with Joy. When Elsa is held responsible for stampeding a herd of elephants through a village, John Kendall, Adamson's boss gives the couple three months to either rehabilitate Elsa to the wild, or send her to a zoo. Joy opposes sending Elsa to a zoo, and spends much time attempting to re-introduce Elsa to the life of a wild lion in a distant reserve. At last, Joy succeeds, and with mixed feelings and a breaking heart, she returns her friend to the wild. The Adamsons then depart for their home in England; a year later, they return to Kenya for a week, hoping to find Elsa. They do, and happily discover she hasn't forgotten them, and is the mother of three cubs.

Peter Sarnak is a South African-born mathematician with dual South-African and American nationalities. He has been Eugene Higgins Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University since 2002, succeeding Andrew Wiles, and is an editor of the Annals of Mathematics. He is known for his work in analytic number theory. Sarnak is also on the permanent faculty at the School of Mathematics of the Institute for Advanced Study. He also sits on the Board of Adjudicators and the selection committee for the Mathematics award, given under the auspices of the Shaw Prize.
Sarnak graduated University of the Witwatersrand (B.Sc. 1975) and Stanford University (Ph.D. 1980), under the direction of Paul Cohen. Sarnak’s highly cited work (with A. Lubotzky and R. Philips) applied deep results in number theory to Ramanujan graphs, with connections to combinatorics and computer science.
Peter Sarnak was awarded the Polya Prize of Society of Industrial & Applied Mathematics in 1998, the Ostrowski Prize in 2001, the Levi L. Conant Prize in 2003, the Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Number Theory in 2005 and a Lester R. Ford Award in 2012. He is the recipient of the 2014 Wolf Prize in Mathematics.
He was also elected as member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) and Fellow of the Royal Society (UK) in 2002. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2010. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Chicago in 2015.

Just fresh off the heels of his very first solo piano recording “The Noguchi Sessions,” he’s been on the front lines fighting the good fight to keep the legacy and rich tradition of jazz music both here and abroad. But it’s been a tremendous fight with the lack of funding to support the arts both in the community and schools, but Arturo balances the art of his creativity via music to give him the added platform to express what the mainstream lacks at a time when this music needs it.
Arturo his living his musical destiny like his father, the late bandleader and composer, Chico O’Farrill. Even though he’s the son of legacy, Arturo has created his own person in jazz music and is totally part of the his own destiny by creating his own voice as both a musician as well as advocate for the music and civil rights. He created the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance to help the younger generation of musicians to learn the rich and important roots to the African and Latin roots. In addition to his teaching he formed the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center so patrons of the music could hear the music of legendary Latin musicians and composers as well as see some of the living greats still perform up close and personal.
Over the years the Grammy-Award winning pianist has played and toured with the likes Freddy Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Lester Bowie. His latest Zoho Records release “The Noguchi Sessions” was recorded at the famed Noguchi Museum in New York City. He had a Steinway Piano delivered to the museum and late one evening he and his engineer just recorded what would become a masterpiece solo piano recording. Arturo performs some of his original compositions as well as plays music by Randy Weston, Charles Mingus, and Ernesto Lecuona.

This is a rare session bringing together three jazz icons, Lester Young (tenor tax) Nat King Cole (piano) and Buddy Rich (drums) for the Gershwin classic, 'Somebody Loves Me'. It was recorded in Los Angeles in December 1945. I love Lester Young's playing, particularly on this song. His tone is so mellow, and his lines are straightforward but sophisticated, without being 'busy' like some sax players. Nat King Cole is his usual brilliant self on piano, perfect accompaniment for Lester, often with left hand bass lines being played (there is no bass player on this session). This was before he became famous as a singer. Finally, one of the best drummers of all time, Buddy Rich, although to my ears, his playing could have been brought forward a bit more in the mix. I want to play it and mek the whole world hear, Muma no want no Bangarang. It was Lester Sterling, Lloyd Charmers and Stranger Coleis really the emphasis on the organ. Mek the organ go Reggae, Reggaethis is the great Bangarang." In the 1982 video production Deeper Roots, also by Channel 4, Lee notes, "same like in the Reggae ting, is a man just bawl out one day, we were having a session, say, make the organ go Reggae, Reggae and the name. Everybody claims the name and they dont even know how it start, right."
