A man has been charged with making a bomb after police found explosives on the back seat of his car - during an incident that created traffic chaos in the northern suburbs.

The 25-year-old's BMW was stopped at a booze bus on Hepburn Avenue in Kingsley at around 2.30pm on Friday afternoon for a routine drug and alcohol test.

Witnesses on the scene claimed the BMW driver had tried to make a U-turn getaway from the booze bus and crashed.

Police confirmed on Saturday two men in the car were detained and the area was cordoned off for two hours after bomb squad officers were called to the scene and took away the device for forensic testing.

The 25-year-old Woodvale man has been charged with making or possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances.

He was due to appear at Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.
