Dinner Time

Here's another great Swankys album with a cover that will probably get a warning put on this blog.If you have been paying attention you know that The Swankys were the more straight 77 style punk alter ego of Japanoise Hardcore gods, GAI.

Total Control

More Gai rarities ripped from this awesome reissue CD from Japan's Anarchy Centre Records. This is mainly for Sean and Slobo for providing me with so much killer noise punk, but the rest of you are totally welcome to it as well. Oh, and happy birthday, Matty Luv, wherever you may be.

The Swankys

The Swankys were the more '77-styled punk persona of Japanese Noisecore gods Gai. Both bands operated in tandem with pretty much the same members and often the same songs. Confusing, I know, but don't concern yourself with the murky history of these bands, just dig into these early recordings (1985) done under the banner of The Swankys. It's nothing to over intellectualize or ponder, just basement pogo punk from guys with names likes Watch, Loods, TV, and Beer. Way fun.

Damnation

Damnation was Gai's second tape/LP. If you have been following the Hearse then you know the story of Gai, if not go here, though I am not even sure of my own accuracy regarding the chronology and discography of Gai. I would like to point out the potpourri of '80s punk awesomeness that is this album's cover: a two-headed skeleton holding Reagan's severed head with what appears to be either a missile or a dildo jammed into it and, and for some reason, the cryptic text that reads "Please Give Me Your Semen." Weird.

Damaging Noise

Perhaps you already know Gai. If you don't, this might be a bit confusing. Gai were another noisy Kyushu hardcore band under the tutelage of fuzz punk legends, Confuse. Gai were responsible for starting the great Violent Party label that released tapes and flexi discs by Confuse and Gai, among others. At some point the members of Gai started operating under the name The Swankys and playing more '77 style punk rock. Both bands existed at the same time for a period, often playing the same songs. This, as well as many bootlegs with misinformation, only added to the entanglement of the band's history. Granted, I could be spreading more misinformation myself. As far as I can tell, Damaging Noise was Gai's debut and was first circulated throughout the Kyushu scene in 1983 on home-dubbed cassettes. Later it was a 12" vinyl. Gai, like Confuse, weren't overly concerned with musicianship or any kind of production values, just noisy, chaotic hardcore on the verge of exploding into complete white hiss. Gai, unlike Confuse, seemed to have a bit of a sense of humor at times. Both bands created a scene, a sub-genre of lower-fi racket in the already truly fucked up Japanese Hardcore universe. There is a reason people go nuts for Japanese punk and hardcore records and it starts here with Gai's Damaging Noise. For a more academic rambling on the merits of Gai, Confuse and other far eastern ear pollutants check out Shit Fi's excellent piece on the subject. In the meantime, get this.

Ain't No Party Like a Violent Party

Violent Party was the in-house label of Japanese noisecore legends Gai. This compilation features the rough-shod talents of Gai, as well as Gedon, No Cut, Confuse, Craps, and Gess. It's a great primer in the noisier side of Japan's flourishing punk scene of the '80s. This party is a bit violent, especially in the kitchen where Confuse is hanging out , but for the most part it's a fun party, a really noisy and really fun party. You're invited.

At the risk of seeming like a creepy Japanophile...

... I present another Japanese record. Here are two of the best noisy hardcore bands of the '80s on one bootleg 12" vinyl. If you are a seasoned fan of Japanese hardcore, this will be old hat for you, but if not, this may just blow your fucking mind out your goddamned earholes!
