Hitchcock's Blackmail might have been a total train wreck in the hands of a lesser talent. Instead, it is a remarkable piece of cinematic history, and still tremendously entertaining after 78 years. The film was partly shot when Hitchcock learned that he would have access to sound equipment. His female lead was a talented German silent picture actress, whose accent was too heavy for sound, so an off-camera reader had to be used, plus a decent amount of expensive film had already been used and had to be integrated into the 'talkie' as well.
All considered, the movie is probably the best example of the transition from these two cinematic paradigms that can be found.
The silent portion of the film establishes John Longden's character as a hard-nosed young Scotland Yard detective. Anny Ondra plays the lovely young lady who is engaged to him,and who soon becomes the center of our attention. One night after they argue over some petty matters, they part company and Anny meets up with a male artist friend, who, unbeknownst to her, is interested in more than just pleasant conversation. Frank (Longden) spots them leaving the restaurant and follows them for a while. The artist coaxes Alice (Ondra) up to his flat, and things take a sinister turn in short order.
Over the second half of the film, the plots unfolds, and the emotions and consciences of the protagonists are sorely tried.
What immediately blew my mind was what a great silent director Hitchcock was. Shouldn't have been too surprising since Hitchcock has always struck me as a master cinematographer. The first 20 minutes of the film are completely silent,and there are no interruptions from distracting story boards. Nevertheless, through incredible use of lighting, camera work, and evocative acting, you understand everything that is going on clearly, and are drawn straight into the edgy atmosphere so familiar to those who appreciate the work of this great director.
The acting is mostly very good. Only Longden sometimes seems to over or under-act his part, and Ondra is really wonderful all the way through. I was not surprised to learn of her lengthy and productive career both before and after this film and will now look for more of her work.It is also interesting to see how the actors adapted so readily to the new medium. Although some have said that the sound portion of this film seemed over-acted because the actors were still clinging to silent film conventions, I really can not agree. Some of the characters (Alice, for example) required very evocative, rather physical performances, and I can't imagine how she could have done better.
Highly recommended for the amazing photography, exceptionally professional though very early use of sound, and the typically perfect pace.

The film is based on the play Blackmail by Charles Bennett, as adapted by Hitchcock, with dialogue by Benn Levy. Having begun production as a silent film, the studio, British International Pictures, decided to convert it to sound during shooting. A silent version was released for theaters not equipped for sound (at 6740 feet), with the sound version (7136 feet) released at the same time. The silent version still exists in the British Film Institute collection.

Blackmail was Britain's first ever "talkie" picture, and Hitchcock managed to become an early innovator with sound in this tense breakfast scene where Alice (Anny Ondra) is confronted by her own guilt over the murder shown earlier in the film. As the customer talks inanely, the sound is cut down to the word "knife", which startles Alice into throwing the knife across the room in fear.

Anny Ondra (15 May 1903 – 28 February 1987) was a Czech film actress whose husband was German boxing great Max Schmeling. She was born Anna Sophie Ondráková in Tarnów, Galicia, Austria–Hungary, now Poland, and died in Hollenstedt near Harburg, Germany.

Sara Allgood
Sara Ellen Allgood (October 31, 1879 – September 13, 1950) was an Irish–American actress.
Early life
Allgood was born in Dublin, Ireland, one of eight children of George and Margaret (née Harold) Allgood. Her father was Protestant and her mother Catholic. Her sister was actress Maire O'Neill, from whom she was later estranged. A brother, Tom, became a Roman Catholic priest. After her father's death when she was a young girl, her mother returned to work as a furniture trader. Allgood began work as soon as she was able, apprenticed to a French polisher near her mother's work.
Early career
Allgood joined Inghinidhe na hÉireann ("Daughters of Ireland"), where she first began to study drama under the direction of Maud Gonne and William Fay. She began her acting career at the Abbey Theatre and was in the opening of the Irish National Theatre Society. Her first big role was in December 1904 at the opening of Lady Gregory's Spreading the News. By 1905 she was a full time actress, touring England and North America.

Charles Paton
Charles Paton (31 July 1874 – 10 April 1970) was an English film actor. He appeared in 105 films between 1927 and 1951, including Freedom of the Seas. In 1927, he appeared in a short film, made in the DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process, singing "If Your Face Wants to Smile, We'll Let It In" from the revue John Citizen's Lament.
He was born in London and died from a heart attack, also in London.

John Longden
John Longden (11 November 1900 – 26 May 1971) was a West Indian-born English film actor. He appeared in 84 films between 1926 and 1964, including five films directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
Biography
Longden was born in the West Indies, being the son of a Wesleyan missionary, and was educated at Kingswood School, Bath, Somerset. Originally intending to be a mining engineer, he worked for two years in a coal mine in Yorkshire, where he started acting in amateur theatrical companies. An introduction to Seymour Hicks saw him start acting on the legitimate stage, beginning with a walk-on park in Old Bill, MP. He played in My Old Dutch with Albert Chevalier, then spent time with the Liverpool and Birmingham repertory theatres. He also appeared in The Farmer's Wife, produced by Barry Jackson at the Court Theatre in London for two years.
About this time Longden began to appear in silent films. He signed contract with Gaumont British Pictures to write and act, earning a notable success with Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail (1929).

Blackmail (1929 film)
Blackmail is a 1929 British thriller drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Anny Ondra, John Longden, and Cyril Ritchard. Based on the 1928 play Blackmail by Charles Bennett, the film is about a London woman who is blackmailed after killing a man who tries to rape her.
After starting production as a silent film, British International Pictures decided to convert Blackmail into a sound film during filming. A silent version was released for theaters not equipped for sound (at 6,740 feet), with the sound version (7,136 feet) released at the same time. The silent version still exists in the British Film Institute collection.
Plot
Scotland Yard Detective Frank Webber (John Longden) escorts his girlfriend Alice White (Anny Ondra) to a tea house. They have an argument and Frank storms out. While reconsidering his action, he sees Alice leave with Mr. Crewe (Cyril Ritchard), an artist she had earlier agreed to meet.
Crewe persuades a reluctant Alice into coming up to see his studio. She admires a painting of a laughing clown, and uses his palette and brushes to paint a cartoonish drawing of a face; he adds a few strokes of a feminine figure, and they both sign the "work". He gives her a dancer's outfit and Crewe sings and plays "Miss Up-to-Date" on the piano.

Hitchcock's Blackmail might have been a total train wreck in the hands of a lesser talent. Instead, it is a remarkable piece of cinematic history, and still tremendously entertaining after 78 years. The film was partly shot when Hitchcock learned that he would have access to sound equipment. His female lead was a talented German silent picture actress, whose accent was too heavy for sound, so an off-camera reader had to be used, plus a decent amount of expensive film had already been used and had to be integrated into the 'talkie' as well. All considered, the movie is probably the best example of the transition from these two cinematic paradigms that can be found. The film is based on the play Blackmail by Charles Bennett, as adapted by Hitchcock, with dialogue by Benn Levy. Having begun production as a silent film, the studio, British International Pictures, decided to convert it to sound during shooting. A silent version was released for theaters not equipped for sound (at 6740 feet), with the sound version (7136 feet) released at the same time. The silent version still exists in the British Film Institute collection.

There is something enormously satisfying about the fact that this brief minute of film contains some of the first words spoken on film - and that they should be quite so saucy. When Alfred Hitchcock decided to shoot his thriller 'Blackmail' in newfangled sound as well as a silent version, he was faced with a number of dilemmas. One of the biggest problems was with his leading lady, the Polish-Czech Anny Ondra, who had not been employed for the authenticity of her English accent. This is the sound test that Hitchcock made. Anny Ondra plays the lovely young lady who is engaged to him,and who soon becomes the center of our attention. One night after they argue over some petty matters, they part company and Anny meets up with a male artist friend, who, unbeknownst to her, is interested in more than just pleasant conversation. Frank (Longden) spots them leaving the restaurant and follows them for a while. The artist coaxes Alice (Ondra) up to his flat, and things take a sinister turn in short order.
Over the second half of the film, the plots unfolds, and the emotions and consciences of the protagonists are sorely tried.
What immediately blew my mind was what a great silent director Hitchcock was. Shouldn't have been too surprising since Hitchcock has always struck me as a master cinematographer. The first 20 minutes of the film are completely silent,and there are no interruptions from distracting story boards. Nevertheless, through incredible use of lighting, camera work, and evocative acting, you understand everything that is going on clearly, and are drawn straight into the edgy atmosphere so familiar to those who appreciate the work of this great director.
The acting is mostly very good. Only Longden sometimes seems to over or under-act his part, and Ondra is really wonderful all the way through. I was not surprised to learn of her lengthy and productive career both before and after this film and will now look for more of her work.It is also interesting to see how the actors adapted so readily to the new medium. Although some have said that the sound portion of this film seemed over-acted because the actors were still clinging to silent film conventions, I really can not agree. Some of the characters (Alice, for example) required very evocative, rather physical performances, and I can't imagine how she could have done better.
Highly recommended for the amazing photography, exceptionally professional though very early use of sound, and the typically perfect pace.

There is something enormously satisfying about the fact that this brief minute of film contains some of the first words spoken on film - and that they should be quite so saucy.
When Alfred Hitchcock decided to shoot his thriller 'Blackmail' in newfangled sound as well as a silent version, he was faced with a number of dilemmas. One of the biggest problems was with his leading lady, the Polish-Czech Anny Ondra, who had not been employed for the authenticity of her English accent.
This is the sound test that Hitchcock made. One of the results was that Ondra's lines in the sound version were dubbed live, off-screen, by the rather more English-sounding Joan Barry. (Robin Baker)

Various shots of boxer Max Schmeling and his wife, actress Anny Ondra at their country home. They come walking out of their house, go to the lake and feed their carp then check on their numerous minks in cages (obviously running some kind of mink farm).
Then they go and feed their chickens - there are loads of them running about a large enclosure. Anny holds one up to show Max and they both examine it. Crates are loaded onto the back of a truck (chickens?). Anny comes running along carrying several trays of eggs which go into the truck too.
