This is not Distress from Saint-Petersburg, Russia that's active now, this is band from Belgrade, the capitol of ex-Yugoslavia and now Serbia, that was active in early 80s. Distress (together with Solunski Front and Necrophilia) were the part of the first wave of hadcore bands from Belgrade. Until 1982 they were called Herpes Distress. They were influenced by early Finnish hardcore punk bands like Rattus, Kaaos and Bastards. During their existence they shared the stage with some of the all-time greats that played in ex-Yu like Rattus and B.G.K. in 1984. They were one of the few ex-Yu hc punk bands that managed to get some studio time because the producers from the studios were state puppets and state didn't liked punk very much. This is the stuff from that session and it waited 12 years to be released on vinyl. One of the more notable appearances of theirs was on the World Class Punk compilation tape done by Mykel Board from MRR. Well this was short version of bio from the 7" and now go grab this killer record because you'll have hard time to get the vinyl 'cause there were only 200 copies pressed.

Patareni "Back To The Roots" LP
As this is 100th post here on Röckin' Nöiz I wanted to put something really special to me.
Patareni are legends and pride of my town Zagreb and they've been delivering their punk röckin' grindcore to generations of punks. They had quite a lot of releases (you can see a partial discography here) and just a few gigs (less than 20 I think) since early 80s when they formed. They were one of the grindcore pioneers and they did their grind with a lot of different musical influences and quite a lot of humour (unfortunately for people outside of ex-Yu those funny songs are all in Croatian and though unundersandable). I remember Dave Shadow from Dregs Of Humanity buying their "Debilana Sessions" 7" and we were telling him that there is almost no music, just idiotic (not in the bad way) joking on Peel Sessions in Croatian and that didn't made no difference because that were Patareni.
On this release from 1996 we have recordings from '88, '90 and '93. Some of the songs are medleys and consist of dosen of songs. In the medleys (first two songs) I've put the names of the included songs in lyrics tag. The sound varies from song to song i.e. the songs from '93 sound metal while the music in the song "Vi Ste Mi Dužni Za Život" is New Age by Blitz with grinding vocals. They never fitted in some "classic grindcore" mould. On the cover are mentioned two more songs from '88 (Falšanja Kol'ko'š Medley and Sajkunda/Something Bezveze), but are not on the record which is strange since there was enough space - the first side lasts 5 and the other 'round 14 minutes. Anyway, enjoy this as I have all these years.
P.S. You can find some Patareni videos on YouTube too.

Nula/Enough! split 10"
This was requested by Danijel, so here it is.
This split is a result of Nula european tour in '97 whose Polish part they did with Enough!.
Nula is Croatian anarcho hardcore punk band that marked nineties punk scene here (and basically in all ex-Yugoslavia). In 1994 they released 90 minute tape accompanied with the fanzine (you can find it here) of angry political music while the war was still a reality here (strange, but there wasn't d-beat bands outburst - hence the war). At that time the scene was pretty much dead. After the release of that tape the whole scene seemed to become alive with bands and zines popping up everywhere and that was really the golden age (in my opinion) of the ex-Yu scene. I could write alot more about them, but let's focus on this release. Here they offer 6 live songs recorded in Rostock on that tour with the last one being cover of Scuffy Dogs, the band from Slovenia whose drummer Sašo was driving the van and singing this song on tour.
Enough! are from Poland and they play slow and heavy crust with downtuned guitars that give them that Dystopia feeling. They also offer 6 of their songs (first three are melting one into another). The stuff on this split is from their 1st tape called "Darkside" that was only available in Poland. At the time of recording they had male and female vocalists (later just male).
The thing with this record is that the bands wanted to make a little reminder of the tour and also to put some of their "older" stuff on vinyl.

Man In The Shadow s/t 7"
"Emoish" band from Slovenia. Knew the guys when they were playing, but don't know what's happening with them now. One of the few such bands that I liked.
Oh, yes! I've reordered the songs in the player. It makes more sense to have new post's song on the top of the player, doesn't it.

Hellback "Promo Tracks"
OK, this one is not out of print stuff like the 99% of stuff here on Röckin' Nöiz, but I got a green light to put it here. Here you have three tracks of great hardcore/crust/punk made by friends of mine from Požega.
I told you already about Pula being mecca for great punk and hardcore bands, well one could say the same for Požega. But it definitely is boozing capital of Croatia.
If you wanna contact them try through the web site of the band Dislike since they share two members. Also great grinding band.
This you can download here and here, on their download page. Check them out. Hellback yeah!

Eluj "Eva Ti Mi Pomažeš Više Nego Bog "
Every country has few cities that produce tons of great bands. For Croatia, Pula is one of them and surely is my personal favourite.
That is where this band comes from. If you're not Croatian you're probably wondering why is this guy's picture instead of the album cover.
First of all this is web only release from Monte Paradiso Netlabel, and second - this is one man band since Jule, the man from the photo, (band name is his name backwards) recorded everything by himself.
Monte Paradiso Netlabel is a part of Pula's Monte Paradiso collective and they make Monte Paradiso hardcore punk festival for more than 15 years. They also run an autonomous cultural center and have released a lot of stuff from bands from pula and Netlabel is just next step where you can download out of print and never to be physically released stuff for free. Check it out.
And Jule is person cursed with inability to make bad music. This stuff was never recorded by his former band Anti-Otpad (who are my all-time favourite Croatian hcpunk) so he did it himself. After the break-up of Anti-Otpad he played in punk rockin' machine called Barrakuda and now is destroying our ears in grindcore monster called Bolesno Grinje (which is half Anti-Otpad BTW). Be sure to check them out. They have four albums released in Mexico and USA, one split LP released by Croatian label and them and an EP on Netlabel. Pure dirty oldschool grindcore as it is meant to be.
Here you can see Eluj video (that is cut off in the end for some strange reason). There's some Bolesno Grinje videos too on their site.

Total Failure "Use Your Head"
This is (was) the band from Kraljevo, Serbia. Heavily influenced by UK punk scene (proof: covers of Chaos U.K., Ripcord and Oi Polloi). Their real name is Totalni Promašaj and all of their songs are in their native language (Chaos U.K. and Ripcord covers too). Their name and tracklist are in english 'cause this was issued in Japan.
They toured Slovenia with my friends Bad Justice from Požega, Croatia in 1996 as part of "Over The Walls Of Nationalism And War" (see previous post) project and that was the first tour of two bands from these countries that were at war until one year ago (then, not now). I was happy to be with them on tour and I remember having a very good time even though 3/4 of the band were straight edge and everyone else more or less dead drunk/stoned. I especially remember when a friend of mine fell asleep in one of the big speakers on stage while Forca Macabra were playing. That was a keeper.
I don't have the original CD and the cover is (badly) photocopied. The original CD was in 7" cover.
By the way, their drummer was around 13 or 14 years old when they recorded this!

VA - Preko Zidova Nacionalizama I Rata 7"
This 7" (english title "Over The Walls Of Nationalism And War") came out one year after the war in ex-Yugoslavia ended. There are 2 bands from Macedonia (Brigade O.D. and Überzeitung), Serbia (Totalni Promašaj and Hoću?Neću!) and Croatia (Nula and Bijes Zdravog Razuma) and Wasserdicht from Slovenia. More info in the text from the record:
Project "Over the Walls of Nationalism and War" is a compilation 7", which presents 7 bands from the area of ex-Yugoslavia. This whole project is thought of as some kind of a communication between the people of good will, and as a proof that, despite the newcame situation, where mutual intolerance rules, dialogue isn't only possible, but also necessary. Regarding that, this record brings a very strong anti-war message, and wants to speed up the peace process over here, peace process which can found solid ground only if tolerance and peace win over the present atmosphere. This effort is proportionally small, just like there are very few people who, like us, do actually take a stand against the war, and defend it with more than just words, but actually practise their declarative stands. But however, it doesn't matter how small and irrelevant this peace of plastic, with noisy and rebellious sounds may seem, it is also a very big step for us. We like to think of it as big because this effort shows that we are here, and that we have the will and the strength to stand up and say "no!", For us, being against the violence, and war is a normal thing, but we can't simply stand by side and watch how those in power rule over other people's lives. We know that our rebellion may seem to some as banging our heads against the wall, but if you look more closely and realize that the only other alternative is to fit in the mob, and become apathic, than you will understand why do we prefer to keep on banging our heads against the walls of stupidity and primitivism. A few words about us. What kind of people are we? Mostly young, who have accidentally found themselves on the wrong place, in the wrong time, on divided sides of an armed conflict. If we had any effect on the society we live in, there would never be any such conflict whatsoever. We believe that nationalism is one of the main reasons why did all this happen, but also that the roots of the crisis reach much further into the spheres of financial, historical, political, culturological and religious problems. Bands from other parts of ex-Yu aren't on this record, but that's not so because there aren't any or because that they didn't want to cooperate, but because their recordings were unreachable at the time. However, we have managed to establish contact with them recently, so watch out for more crazy people banging their heads against the walls of nationalism and war...

SexA "Pussy In The Sky With Diamonds" 7"
This single was released to celebrate the first year of "Iz Sve Snage (With All Power)", the first independent record store in Zagreb where a lot of us bought one of our first hardcore, grind or punk records.
SexA (Sedatives ex Apoteka (Sedatives from the Pharmacy)) were noise band from my hometown Zagreb. They started around 1980/81 and are often regarded as best noise band ever in ex-Yugoslavia and soon became a cult group.
When war broke out here, they've moved to Amsterdam, but soon disbanded. That was also due to many problems they had with local squatters who labeled them sexist and what not and they were blacklisted everywhere in A'dam. That was utter bullshit and they were one of most positive and active people in Zagreb's scene in the 80s.
Beside this single, they also had an album "Fuck Piction/No Sleep 'til Pussy" which are two recordings on one LP and a number of tape releases.
Famous Steve Albini was interested in producing their new material, but they have called it quits in 1992. He once performed their song "No Sleep 'til Pussy" with Shellac.
They've done some stuff later with different line-up and more industrial sound.
Here you can see three videos (Jeane! Jone!, No Sleep Till Pussy and Djevojčica(Girl)) from their "The Jeane Jone Story" VHS from 1991 that also contained some live footage, rehearsal outtakes and an interview.

U.B.R. "Harmonija (1983-85)"
Another one from Slovenia.
U.B.R. (short for Uporniki Brez Razloga (Rebels Without a Cause)) are probably my all-time favourite punk band from ex-Yu. This is their (almost total) discography.
Includes "Corpus Delicti" 7" and complete demo for the "Corpus Delicti" 7" (with many unreleased tracks), first demo '83 taken from "Kaj Je Alternativa" comp. tape, demo for Novi Rock '85, unmixed tracks for "Hard-Core Ljubljana" LP and live tracks from hardcore festival in Ljubljana '84. In short, it includes all possible to be found tracks except the stuff used for Tutti Pazzi # 3 compilation CD. Total of 49 tracks.
The quality of recordings goes from good to bad, but this is a document of a great times for hardcore punk in ex-Yu.
Here's also an review of the CD and U.B.R. KFTH page with Maximum Rock'n'roll interview from '84.

Pankrti "Dolgcajt"
Not so nöizy, but since these guys are celebrating their 30th anniversary with a reunion tour here's a bit of history.
Pankrti were pioneering punk band in ex-Yugoslavia that started things rolling and influenced many to start their own bands. They were formed in 1977 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Their first single "Lepi In Prazni/Lublana Je Bulana" (1978) was the first punk single in ex-Yu (pressed in only 2000 copies). It received great reviews in New Musical Express and Melody Maker. About 200 copies made it to USA and one of it's proud owners is Jello Biafra who considered "Dolgcajt" one of the greatest punk albums in the world. Here is the Wikipedia article about them and here is their first album Dolgcajt.
