Product Description

FILM TIE IN EDITION

Tilly Dunnage has come home to care for her mad old mother. She left the small Victorian town of Dungatar years before, and became an accomplished couturier in Paris. Now she earns her living making exquisite frocks for the people who drove her away when she was ten. Through the long Dungatar nights, she sits at her sewing machine, planning revenge.

The Dressmaker is a modern Australian classic, much loved for its bittersweet humour. Set in the 1950s, its subjects include haute couture, love and hate, and a cast of engagingly eccentric characters. It is now a major motion picture, starring Kate Winslet and fine Australian actors including Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, Liam Hemsworth and extras from the author's hometown of Jerilderie.

About the Author

Rosalie Ham worked in aged care until The Dressmaker, her first novel, became a best seller. She now teaches literature and has published the acclaimed novels Summer At Mount Hope and There Should Be More Dancing.

Read Caroline Baum's Review

Talk about stitch ‘n bitch!

The most eagerly awaited re-issue of the year; this classic could now be described perhaps as rural noir, although it is far more colourful than that. There’s a seam of stylish mischief in every page of the story of Tilly Dunnage, who returns to the fictional town of Dungatar where everyone (except the local police sergeant) is a frump, not mention dysfunctional.

With her pinking shears sharpened, Tilly is freshly back from learning the fine details of tailoring and couture in Paris. Shrugging off the hostility and gossip that plagued her early life, when she was accused of murder, she refashions the townswomen, catering to all their insecurities and jealousies. Meanwhile she plans her revenge and wrangles the unexpected romantic advances of a flirtatious suitor under the spiteful gaze of her mother, Mad Molly.

Comic, colourful and peopled with a marvellous cast of eccentric characters each harbouring their own secret, Rosalie Ham’s novel is what every stylish reader will be wearing this season.weeping, melancholy and magnificent.

    Comments about The Dressmaker:

I first read this years ago and bought it recently after seeing the movie, which is a crazy ride of unlikely and outrageous events, mainly to check how close it was to the book. Sure enough, the book is like that too, except it was even more outrageous on the screen!

It's very different to anything else I've read, in fact unique in the true sense of the world and full of unexpected twists and turns, some of which verge on the melodramatic: not saying which ones in case I spoil it for future readers!

                    Comments about The Dressmaker:

I soon realized I had to really concentrate to keep up with all the characters i.e. who was who; in fact there's almost too many. Nonetheless a delightful read, with a couple of surprises, from an author with a great ability to write well, and also to provide vivid images of the myriad personalities involved. Each individual's quirks and idiosyncrasies are palpable - very clever. Easy to see why they made a movie of it.
