Community is all about sharing good food, giving you endless ideas on delicious salads to serve up for your family, friends and neighbours. These simple, sustainable and healthy recipes feature fresh, seasonal produce and inject colour, life and flair into that most modest of everyday meals: the salad. Rather than being simply sides,Community's salads are meals in their own right, giving vegetables, legumes, herbs and nuts their moment to shine.
The recipes in Community are inspired by author Hetty McKinnon's community kitchen, Arthur Street Kitchen, where Hetty single-handedly makes and delivers homemade salads to residents in Surry Hills, Sydney, on Thursday and Friday every week. All by bike! Hetty's salads use only the freshest produce, sourced locally wherever possible. Inspired first and foremost by the seasons, Hetty also takes cues from what she sees, smells and experiences from the world around her. At the heart of every dish is a core vegetable, around which a thoughtful culinary story is built, resulting in honest, inventive and hearty salads that deliver big, punchy flavours.
About the Author
Hetty McKinnon is a home cook who grew up devouring the colours, aromas and flavours of her mother's ebullient Cantonese cooking. Formerly a beauty PR, she is now the one-woman show behind the incredibly successful Arthur Street Kitchen, whipping up flavour-packed salads and sweets in her home kitchen then delivering them by bike to hungry Surry Hills locals. Hetty lives in Sydney with her husband, Ross, and three children, Scout, Dash and Huck. Community is her first cookbook.

Must have cookbook for vegetarians. Have only had it a short time and tried many of the recipes, none have disappointed. Creates interesting meals to be eaten as a meal rather than a side dish for those of us who do not eat meat. I have found a lot of vegetarian books have recipes that fall short of rating themselves a 'meal'. For those that do eat meat, they are fantastic sides. I make them as a meal for me and sides for the family who all eat meat. The kids have commented on the flavour in their veggies! I LOVE this cookbook!!

The recipes in this cookbook are definitely simple and nutritious. It is a simple cookbook to read and the layout and photography is beautiful.
However, the majority of these recipes are very VERY similar to Yotam Ottolenghi's recipes. As someone who owns and regularly uses Ottolenghi's cookbooks, I did not learn anything new, nor was I greatly inspires. It was disappointing to me that some of the recipes are exactly the same to recipes in Ottolenghi's Plenty and Plenty more. The only changes seem to be adding a spice here or some cheese there. I believe it is important to credit other chefs/cooks if you lean on their ideas so heavily. Interestingly, Ottolenghi regularly credits where/who inspires his recipes, which has allowed me to look up other cookbooks and interesting recipes.
If you are looking for a great collection of vegetarian recipes, look no further than Ottolenghi.
Don't get me wrong, the recipes are delicious and simple to make. However, they are not original.
This cookbook would potentially be good for someone who is new to cooking and may be a bit overwhelmed with a larger cookbook.
If you do own the Ottolenghi cookbooks, then don't bother with community. Save your dollars!

I have had this book for over a year and I have made about half of the recipes. We are meat eaters who eat a lot of vegetables. I try to ply my family with healthy food and this book makes it easy as it is totally delicious. Whenever I have people over I make a couple of these salads and I always get rave reviews. In summer I use it 3 or 4 days a week - its my staple.

I first discovered Community after I was fortunate enough to be fed one of the salads in it by a work colleague.
Many of it's recipes are now staples in my weekly menu.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
While completely vegetarian, the salads are so delicious and hearty they will even convert the most stubborn of meat eaters!
In my opinion, Community proves unequivocally: you DO make friends with salad.
This book is fabulous, gorgeous layout, easy to read, great photos and every recipe is just delicious.
It would make a beautiful gift but is a handy at home reference of some yummy vegetarian dishes that are hearty enough to be meals in themselves.
