Strawberries

With their sweet and delicate flavour, it's no wonder that strawberries are so popular.

Surprisingly, the strawberry isn't a berry at all, but is part of the rose family, which includes apples and plums. It's also the only fruit with seeds that grow on the outside. Strawberries are grown all year round in Australia, but are at their peak in spring and summer.

Buying and storing

Choose strawberries that are bright red in colour with fresh looking, green leaves. Store strawberries in a container lined with paper towel in the fridge.

Preparation

Strawberries are best served at room temperature. Remove fruit frim fridge 30 minutes before eating. Wash strawberries well, and remove the hull (the green leafy part) before serving.

Nutrition

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C - one cup provides 180 per cent of the recommended daily intake. They are also high in folate, needed for a healthy heart and healthy pregnancy. Strawberries are low in natural sugars and kilojoules and are packed with beneficial flavonoid antioxidants. They're also a source of fibre for digestive health and potassium for better blood pressure.
