Art Basel in Europe

Our 2016 show, one of the most successful in Art Basel’s history, brought the international artworld together, with more than 280 of the world's leading galleries showing the work of over 4,000 artists. A full program of artworld talks took place each day. Exhibitions and events were also offered by cultural institutions in Basel and the surrounding area, creating an exciting, region-wide art week.

Next show in Basel: June 15 – 18, 2017

HIGHLIGHT

Parcours

The Parcours sector engaged the public and fairgoers by placing site-specific sculptures, interventions, and performances in the city's neighborhoods. Parcours was curated by Samuel Leuenberger.

HIGHLIGHT

'Zome Alloy'

Oscar Tuazon built his lightweight structural wood shell, 'Zome Alloy', on Messeplatz for the 47th edition of the Basel show. An adaptation of Steve Baer's ‘Zome House’ (1972), the architectural structure housed a series of events throughout the week – a second version of the 1969 'Alloy Conference'.

HIGHLIGHT

Pierre Bismuth: 'Where is Rocky II?'

Art Basel's week-long program of films by and about artists was curated by Maxa Zoller. Known for her roaming series of experimental film screenings, Zoller offered a diverse and challenging program of works that together created a dialogue about the medium of film today. One highlight was the exclusive preview of 'Where is Rocky II?', the first feature-length fiction film by Oscar-winning French artist Pierre Bismuth.

Unlimited

Curated by New York-based curator Gianni Jetzer, Unlimited is Art Basel's pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the classical art-show stand, including massive sculpture and paintings, video projections, large-scale installations, and live performances.
