This Day In
As we sit on the precipice of Donald Trump’s presidency, now would seem to be a very good time to reminisce about how Led Zeppelin and Barack Obama were hanging out together exactly four years ago today.

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd [Deluxe]
49 years ago today, The Monkees were sitting atop the Billboard 200 with their fourth album, thereby providing the group with their fourth consecutive chart-topping LP. Sadly, the streak would stop there, but four #1 albums in a row is nothing to sneeze at.

John Densmore
Today is the birthday of John Densmore, drummer for The Doors, and given our pride in the band’s back catalog, you probably knew we were going to pay tribute to him with a post. Thing is, we already spotlighted some of his non-Doors project for his last birthday, so we thought, “What can we do different this year?” Instead, we decided to spotlight six Doors covers that you might not have heard. Here’s hoping at least a few of these are new to you!

12-Pack: Bette Midler

It’s Bette Midler’s birthday today, and if you’ve noticed that we’ve upped our usual Six-Pack piece to a 12-Pack in this instance, well, what can we say? If you can’t double-up for the divine Miss M, then who can you double up for? As it happens, it was a pretty easy decision to make, not to mention a pretty easy piece to put together, as we decided to spotlight 12 songs that you may not have realized that Bette Midler cover.

Happy 40th: Leo Sayer, ENDLESS FLIGHT

40 years ago this month, Leo Sayer released the album that found him asking him how much love you needed, telling you when he needed you, and informing you in no uncertain terms that you made him feel like dancing.

Happy Anniversary: The Jesus & Mary Chain, PSYCHOCANDY

31 years ago this month, The Jesus and Mary Chain released their debut studio album, which might well explain why the two stalwarts of the band – brothers Jim and William Reid – chose this month to announce that they’re on the verge of releasing their first new album in 18 years.

Happy 35th: New Order, MOVEMENT
35 years ago this month, New Order released their debut album, an LP which would go on to be viewed as one of the best album of the ‘80s. At the time of its release, however, it found the band between a rock and a hard place, trying to move forward while not dismissing the past, which proved to be a very difficult dance indeed.

Happy Anniversary: Yes, RELAYER

42 years ago today, Yes released their seventh studio album, an endeavor which found them carrying on without Rick Wakeman but might well have featured a future Academy Award winner as his replacement if the winds of change had blown a different way.
