Afrikaners are a Southern African ethnic group descended from predominantly Dutch settlers first arriving in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They traditionally dominated South Africa's agriculture and politics prior to 1994. Some of the more common Afrikaner surnames include Botha, Pretorius and van der Merwe.
Afrikaans, South Africa's third most widely spoken home language, is the mother tongue of Afrikaners and most Cape Coloureds. It evolved from the Dutch vernacular of South Holland, incorporating words brought from Indonesia and Madagascar by slaves. Afrikaners make up approximately 5.2% of the total South African population based on the number of white South Africans who speak Afrikaans as a first language in the South African National Census of 2011.
Bok van Blerk, born Louis Andreas Pepler 30 March 1978, is a South African musician who sings in Afrikaans. He became famous in 2006 for his rendition of "De la Rey" by Sean Else and Johan Vorster.
Van Blerk went to Hoërskool Die Wilgers (school) in Pretoria. After his study, he spent time working abroad.
In March 2006, Bok van Blerk and the Mossies released the album Jy praat nog steeds my taal (You still speak my language). The same album was rereleased in October 2006 under the name De La Rey and solely credited to Bok van Blerk. According to Van Blerk "and the Mossies" was removed because his fellow singer, Tanya van Graan, was too busy modelling. Van Blerk is accompanied by Jaco Mans (and occasionally Manie van Niekerk) on lead guitar, Francois Coetzee on bass guitar, and Nathan Smit on the drums.

First prize at the World Press Photo Multimedia Award and first prize PIcture of the Year International (POYI) in the multimedia category. Multimedia production by journalist/videographer Elles van Gelder & photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien about the right-wing organization Kommandokorps in South Africa. White South African teens wrestle with an uncertain identity. An extreme right-wing group is teaching young Afrikaners to eschew Nelson Mandela's vision of a multicultural rainbow nation. The fringe group Kommandokorps, led by old-apartheid leader Franz Jooste, organizes camps in school holidays where Afrikaner teenagers learn to defend themselves against crime in South Africa. But that's not all. They learn they are their own people - not South Africans but Afrikaners - that shouldn't in...

See how South Africa's Boer-Afrikaner people hoist their flags and sing the anthems of their two republics. The Zuid Afrikaanse Republic also names Transvaal and the Republic of the Orange Free State, also named the Vrystaat. This flag parade was filmed at the official opening of the Majuba Festival on 23 February 2013. Brittan declared these two republics as free states after the battle that happened on top of the hill Majuba, in the background, on 27 February 1881. Brittan then turned its back and took the two free republics back after the second Anglo Boer War from 1899 to 1902, were 27000 Boer-Afrikaner woman and children were killed by England in concentration camps. Brittan never paid compensation or even begged forgiveness for stealing the Boer-Afrikaner republicks. The battle of Ma...

This 1977 United Nations (UN) documentary examines the role of Afrikaners in South Africa’s former apartheid system during the 20th century. While the director indulged in a modicum of Afrikaner stereotyping, this documentary is nevertheless an informative ‘glance’ into the latter’s psyche.
“As a child I felt really ashamed of being Afrikaans…I hated it…but then I met so many [Afrikaans] people who weren’t judgmental” The race debate is complicated, with conversations happening on all sides. For white South Africans with Afrikaans roots, the conversation includes topics of white privilege and inherited guilt. These 7 Young Afrikaners would like to change current perceptions of ‘boere’, from racists by default to just regular South Africans struggling to find their place in our rainbow nation.
Sunette Bridges will chain herself to the Paul Kruger statue in Church Square, Tshwane, opposing its removal despite the police tape cordoning the statue off and claims that it is a crime scene.

It is a provocative look from within at Afrikaner extremists who, in 1991, clung to the belief that they were the chosen "super race" of Africa. With the demise of white rule, many of these Boers lived in fear. Some had banded into paramilitary groups, such as Eugene Terre'Blanche's Afrikaner Resistance Movement, which claimed wide support within the South African army and police. They were preparing...
A South African court earlier this week convicted Julius Malema, president of the African National Congress Youth League, of hate speech for singing "shoot the Boer, kill the Boer" at a rally last year. But some Boers, or white South African farmers, say they have had enough of violence and racial tension in South Africa and are planning to move out. VOA's James Brooke visited one Afrikaner who started farming this year in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.
