After three years of hard fought and bitter political debate, the Federal Government is now clear to reinstate the Australian Building and Construction Commission, abolished by Labor when it was in office. Legislation to restore the construction industry watchdog has passed through the Senate this morning. Labor says the legislation is now very different to what was originally proposed. It's attached the South Austalian Senator Nick Xenophon for supporting it without safeguarding the environmental future of the Murray River. More

The Government has unexpectedly lost support in the Senate for its 15 per cent tax rate for working holiday makers, creating another standoff in Parliament. Labor gathered enough support on the crossbench to again amend the proposed tax rate to 10.5 per cent, but the Government says it won't accept that in the Lower House and will send it back to the Senate. The National Farmers Federation describes the stalemate as an 'insanity' and says it can't believe it is continuing.

More than 6,000 guns were stolen in Australia over a two-year period between 2013 and 2015, while the annual number of thefts has almost doubled since 2009. Unions are gearing up to fight a Fair Work Commission decision which they say is a green light to employers to sack striking workers and casualise workforces. Coal miners at Anglo American's German Creek mine in central Queensland have been on strike for 103 days, campaigning for job security. Anglo successfully argued that the strike forced it to change work practices and now the industrial umpire says it can legitimately make redundancies. More
