One of the biggest debates on the horizon in the new Congress is the fight for control of American food. We’ve seen clear indications in the new spending bill, that the FDA is about to come under heavy scrutiny, and new laws are just around the corner. One of those many focuses will be on Genetically Modified Organisms. GMOs. Many countries around the world outlaw GMO ingredients in their foods, and here in the United States, billion dollar corporations enjoy some of the most relaxed regulations in the world. And even those GMO laws that DO exist are still under constant attack. Companies like Monsanto, DuPont and Syngenta spend millions of dollars to lobby Congress to give them a break. They’re trying to persuade lawmakers that companies don’t have to be transparent to their customers about the ingredients in their food. The harder consumers push for transparency, the harder these companies fight back. In Vermont, voters approved a new law, requiring these corporations to label all GMO products. And in Los Angeles, voters moved to BAN GMOs altogether. Now, both of those places might lose that progress, thanks to Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo. Pompeo is the poster boy for the GMO lobby, and he’s doing everything in his power to defend his corporate friends. Pompeo has plans to reintroduce a counter bill that would prevent states from setting their own standards. Instead, Pompeo would strip states of their own right to demand GMO labels, and give that authority to the federal government.
