Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division, and Lubaga Division. The city is coterminous with Kampala District. Surrounding Kampala is the rapidly growing Wakiso District, whose population more than doubled between 2002 and 2014 and now stands at over 2 million.
Before the arrival of the British colonists, the Kabaka of Buganda had chosen the zone that would become Kampala as a hunting reserve. The area, composed of rolling hills with grassy wetlands in the valleys, was home to several species of antelope, particularly impala. When the British arrived, they called it "Hills of the Impala". The language of the Buganda, Luganda, adopted many English words because of their interactions with the British. The Buganda translated "Hill of the Impala" as Akasozi ke'Empala - "Kasozi" meaning "hill", "ke" meaning "of", and "empala" the plural of "impala". In Luganda, the words "ka'mpala" means "that is of the impala", in reference to a hill, and the single word "Kampala" was adopted as the name for the city that grew out of the Kabaka's hills.

In 2010, Kampala City was in desperate need of repair. Many city roads were riddled with potholes, most of the street lights were not working, and local government corruption interfered with the resources necessary to improve the city’s infrastructure and delivery of services to its citizens. With the support of the Kampala Institution Infrastructure Development Project (KIIDP), the Kampala City Council was able to tackle those challenges and lay the foundation for a resilient, sustainable and organized city.

A city built on seven hills, Kampala, the capital of Uganda offers an exciting cultural experience for many foreign visitors. Rated by the UN as a country with the happiest people in East Africa, many foreigners find it easy to stay and live comfortably within the city. Michael Baleke reports.
www.theredquest.com I fly into Kampala and stay at the Sheraton. From there I have a wander around to see the marabou storks and then the next day head off on a city tour. I visit Owino Market, a couple of Mosques and generally have a great old time. Read my book about visiting every former Soviet Republic. Visit www.theredquest.com

When in Kampala ... take a BodaBoda tour of the city with Walter's Tours. Incredibly knowledgable guides, a very good overview of the city's main attractions and all of the senses heightened by the fresh air, smells and sights. Exhilarating. Up close and personal. I felt Kampala seep in through my skin and I like it there. Highly recommended. See http://www.walterstours.com/ for tour options. Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com). Filmed by me. Edited by Eden Weiss. This video was shot 100% using a GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition. Look at me, Stare inside
Take my place, In my mind
Capture me, Follow through
Validate, Wanting you
Baby this seems so wrong.
Baby this seems so right.
Hour after hour, so long,
Day after day, so long,
Year after year after year.
And now we're here...
Never fade from my mind.
Shower me and give me life.
Never fade from my mind.
Always there when I close my eyes.
Hesitate. Pull me in.
Breath on breath. Skin on skin.
Lovin' deep. Fallin fast.
All right here. Let this last.
Baby it's been so long.
And it could be tonight.
Hour after hour, so long,
Day after day, so long,
Year after year after year.
And now we're here...
Never fade from my mind.
Shower me and give me life.
Never fade from my mind.
Always there when I close my eyes.
((give me life))
((give me life))
And now we're here...
Never fade from my mind.
Shower me and give me life
(give me love & give me life)
Never fade from my mind.
