The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is a nonprofit American medical research facility that focuses on research and education in the biomedical sciences. Headquartered in San Diego, California with a sister facility in Jupiter, Florida, the institute is home to 2,700 scientists, technicians, graduate students, and administrative and other staff, making it among the largest private, non-profit biomedical research organizations in the world.
TSRI's roots can be traced to the Scripps Metabolic Clinic, founded near the current site in the La Jolla area of San Diego in 1924 by the philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, who was inspired by the discovery of insulin. In 1946, the metabolic clinic separated from Scripps Memorial Hospital.
In 1956, the organization was renamed Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation to reflect its broader focus and management's renewed commitment to biomedical research. Harvard biochemist A. Baird Hastings joined the institute in 1959, followed by immunologist Frank J. Dixon and four of his colleagues (William Weigle, Joseph Feldman, Charles Cochrane, and Jacinto Vazquez) in 1961, biochemist Frank Huennekens and microbiologist John Spizizen in 1962, then other scientists. Dixon was appointed director of research operations in 1970, and in 1977 these operations assumed the name of The Research Institute of Scripps Clinic.
A research institute is an establishment endowed for doing research. Research institutes may specialize in basic research or may be oriented to applied research. Although the term often implies natural science research, there are also many research institutes in the social sciences as well, especially for sociological and historical research purposes.
In the early medieval period, several astronomical observatories were built in the Islamic world. The first of these was the 9th-century Baghdad observatory built during the time of the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun, though the most famous were the 13th-century Maragheh observatory, 15th-century Ulugh Beg Observatory.
The earliest research institute in Europe was Tycho Brahe's Uraniborg complex on the island of Hven, a 16th-century astronomical laboratory set up to make highly accurate measurements of the stars. In the United States there are numerous notable research institutes including Bell Labs, The Scripps Research Institute,Beckman Institute, and SRI International. Hughes Aircraft used a research institute structure for its organizational model.

The Canal Wound Clinic is an effort to do outreach for people who live in the Tijuana River canal, including participants enrolled at the UCSD “Proyecto El Cuete IV”. El Cuete IV aims to evaluate the impact of drug policy reform on the HIV risk environment among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Tijuana, Mexico. All the supplies are donated by NGOs and local supporters. UCSD students and staff volunteer in the canal during their free time as part of a multidisciplinary collaboration, addressing questions of social justice and global health through action and advocacy. Sha Na Na is an American rock and roll group. The name is taken from a part of the long series of nonsense syllables in the doo-wop hit song "Get a Job", originally recorded in 1957 by the Silhouettes. Billing themselves as "from the streets of New York" and outfitted in gold lamé, leather jackets, and pompadour and ducktail hairdos, Sha Na Na performs a song and dance repertoire of classic fifties rock and roll, simultaneously reviving and sending up the music and 1950s New York street culture. Sha Na Na hosted the Sha Na Na syndicated variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981. This video is targeted to blind users. Sun is up should be feeling great,
your feeling rough got too much on your plate,
a busy day got a lot to do,
a heavy head you think you've caught the flu.
Something deep inside begins to stir,
spirit, conscience your not really sure.
It's gonna be okay...
It's gonna be okay...
Another day your late for work,
the shower's cold you ain't got no clean shirt.
A cup of tea just might do the trick,
the milk's gone off by now feeling sick.
Something deep inside begins to stir,
spirit, conscience your not really sure.
It's gonna be okay...
It's gonna be okay...
We laughed, we cried, we shared along the way,
we did some things we knew we shouldn't do.
So after all what's this life living for,
work it out or head straight for the door
It's gonna be okay...either way
It's gonna be okay...
You close your eyes, try to sleep.
Scold yourself for hours that you keep.
Drifting off will I dream tonight?
In my dreams perhaps I'll get it right.
Something deep inside begins to purrr,
spirit, conscience your not really sure.
It's gonna be okay...
It's gonna be okay...either way
