How cold
When I woke up this morning
it was very cold.
How cold was it?
It was a freezing, sneezing
goose-bumpy, teeth-chattering,
can't-get-out-of-bed,
blankets-over-my-head
kind of cold
Cold refers to the condition or subjective perception of having low temperature, the absence of heat.
A lower bound to temperature is absolute zero, defined as 0 K on the Kelvin scale, an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale. This corresponds to −273.15 °C on the Celsius scale, −459.67 °F on the Fahrenheit scale, and 0 °R on the Rankine scale.
Since temperature relates to the thermal energy held by an object or a sample of matter, which is the kinetic energy of the random motion of the particle constituents of matter, an object will have less thermal energy when it is colder and more when it is hotter. If it were possible to cool a system to absolute zero, all motion of the particles in a sample of matter would cease and they would be at complete rest in this classical sense. The object would be described as having zero thermal energy. Microscopically in the description of quantum mechanics, however, matter still has zero-point energy even at absolute zero, because of the uncertainty principle.
An orphanage is a residential institution devoted to the care of orphans – children whose biological parents are deceased or otherwise unable or unwilling to care for them. Biological parents, and sometimes biological grandparents, are legally responsible for supporting children, but in the absence of these, no named godparent, or other relatives willing to care for the children, they become a ward of the state, and orphanages are one way of providing for their care, housing and education.
It is frequently used to describe institutions abroad, where it is a more accurate term, since the word orphan has a different definition in international adoption. Although many people presume that most children who live in orphanages are orphans, this is often not the case with four out of five children in orphanages having at least one living parent and most having some extended family. Most orphanages have been closed in Europe and North America. There remain a large number of state funded orphanages in the former Soviet Bloc but many of them are slowly being phased out in favour of direct support to vulnerable families and the development of foster care and adoption services where this is not possible.
Magdalene asylums, also known as Magdalene laundries, were institutions from the 18th to the late 20th centuries ostensibly to house "fallen women", a term used to imply female sexual promiscuity or work in prostitution. Asylums operated throughout Europe and North America for much of the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, the last one closing in 1996. The institutions were named after the Biblical figure Mary Magdalene, in earlier centuries characterised as a reformed prostitute.
The first Magdalene institution was founded in late 1758 in Whitechapel, England, which led to the establishment of a similar institution in Ireland by 1767. The first Magdalene asylum in the United States was the Magdalen Society of Philadelphia, founded in 1800; other North American cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago, and Toronto, quickly followed suit. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Magdalene asylums were common in several countries. By 1900, there were more than 300 asylums in England and more than 20 in Scotland.
Sex in a Cold Climate is an 1998 Irish documentary film detailing the mistreatment of "fallen women" in the Magdalene laundries in Ireland. It was produced and directed by Steve Humphries and narrated by Dervla Kirwan. It was used as a source for the 2002 film, The Magdalene Sisters.
The film was produced by Testimony Films and aired on Channel 4 in March 1998.
The documentary interviews four women, three of whom were incarcerated in Magdalene asylums in Ireland: Brigid Young is the only one of the four women interviewed who never experienced a laundry, but she grew up in an adjoining orphanage in Limerick. She recalls how a priest masturbated on her dress in confession, then walked away as if nothing had happened, and how she was too inexperienced to know what had happened. Phyllis Valentine was sent from her orphanage in County Clare to an asylum in Galway aged just fifteen because the nuns at the orphanage considered her to be "too pretty" and at risk of "falling away" (in other words, becoming pregnant); Martha Cooney told a relative she had been raped by her cousin, and she was whisked off to a laundry too; and Christina Mulcahy gave birth to a child out of wedlock. The child was taken away from her and put up for adoption, and Mulcahy was then disowned by her family before being taken to a laundry in Galway while she was still lactating.

Steve Humphries' Sex in a Cold Climate , a documentary denouncing the Magdalene Asylums, which were operated by Catholic nuns in Ireland for over 100 years, caused an uproar when it was televised in England in March 1998 as part of Channel Four's Witness series. An estimated three million people watched the documentary, one of the highest figures ever recorded for the series. A help line was set up, which received calls from almost 450 women who had experienced abuse and trauma through the Magdalene Asylums and the Catholic Church. The documentary was blacklisted by the Irish network RTE and to this date has never been officially aired in Ireland. Mr. Humphries has produced over 80 social-history documentaries and written 20 books based on ordinary people's life stories. But he insists th...
Sometimes there's nothing scarier than a little kid--and Orphan will introduce us to Esther, one of the scariest of them all. Without much in the way of star power this one's going to be counting on sheer thrills to generate its success. When a young couple adopts an adorable nine year old girl, she seems downright heaven sent. But this little angel's halo is looking downright crooked--is she as innocent as she seems? Brace yourselves--here comes the trailer! Does this movie give you the chills or just leave you cold? Hit our comments section and tell us what you think! Thanks for watching!

A orphanage fire had killed at least 7 children in Central China's Henan Province. Another child was injured and remains hospitalized following the fire on Friday in Lankao town. The cause is still being investigated, but witnesses have described what they saw. Ms Cheng lives behind the burned building. She says she was eating breakfast with her husband when she heard a crackling sound at around half past eight. Ms Cheng said, "We both went to look out the window, the fire seemed liked it was right in front of us. We ran downstairs and saw fire coming out of the first floor of the building. We called the fire department. We then realized many people live in the building, especially many elderly ones. So we called them downstairs." They tried to round up help to fight the fire. On our second day in Nepal Reign, my mum and I headed just outside Kathmandu to visit Hope For Nepal Children's Home, which is an orphanage my family has been supporting for the past decade, and we visited 6 years ago. Brother Nepal and his wife run the orphanage, intially starting in 1995 with just a few children, but they are now up to almost 20 children plus their own two sons. They do this full time, unpaid, out of the goodness of their heart. The orphanage is fully reliant on overseas sponsorship to stay open. Last time I visited 6 years ago the house seemed spacious with only the 12 kids, but now with almost 20 it's truly become cramped, but remains a joyful and happy place! Sadly the orphanage has been heavily damaged in the recent earthquake, to the point where no one can safely ...

Interlocking interviews of 4 women interred in various Magdalene asylums and/or orphanages because of out-of-wedlock pregancies, being sexually assaulted, or just being "too pretty" (believe it or not).
We used to know each other,
Found out you're close to die.
Is there a way to help you,
To help you stay alive?
Searching on and on to find a way,
Faith will help you.
Searching on and on,
You're so cold and numb.
Hell
They try to break me
They try to beat me down
They try to freak me out
You try to save me
You try to get me up
You try to tread me right
Don't try to touch me
Don't waste your precious time
Please turn around and go
Go away
Leave me alone
This is our last goodbye.
