The Northern Cape (Afrikaans: Noord-Kaap; Tswana: Kapa Bokone) is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies. The southern towns of De Aar and Colesberg, in the Great Karoo, are major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In the northeast, Kuruman is famous as a mission station and also for its "eye". The Orange River flows through the province, forming the borders with the Free State in the southeast and with Namibia to the northwest. The river is also used to irrigate the many vineyards in the arid region near Upington.
Native speakers of Afrikaans comprise a higher percentage of the population in the Northern Cape than in any other province. The Northern Cape's four official languages are Afrikaans, Tswana, Xhosa, and English. Minorities speak the other official languages of South Africa, and a few people speak indigenous languages such as Nama and Khwe.
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
The Province of the Cape of Good Hope (Afrikaans: Provinsie van die Kaap die Goeie Hoop), commonly referred to as the Cape Province (Afrikaans: Kaapprovinsie) was a province in the Union of South Africa and subsequently the Republic of South Africa.
It encompassed the old Cape Colony, and had Cape Town as its capital.
When the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, the original Cape Colony was renamed the Cape Province.
It was by far the largest of South Africa's four provinces, as it contained regions it had previously annexed, such as British Bechuanaland (not to be confused with the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now Botswana), Griqualand East (the area around Kokstad) and Griqualand West (area around Kimberley). As a result, it encompassed two-thirds of South Africa's territory, and covered an area similar in size to the U.S. state of Texas.
At the time of the formation of the Union of South Africa, the entire region now called South Africa was only four provinces: Transvaal (South African Republic), Natal (Natalia Republic), Orange Free State and the Cape Province.

Kathu is a town in South Africa and the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape province. Its name means "town under the trees", after the Camel Thorn forest it is situated in. The phrase "the town under the trees" was coined by an engineer working in the town in the early 1990 as part of a tourism marketing drive, together with the accompanying graphic. It was intended to be a marketing slogan. The meaning of the word "Kathu" has anecdotally been attributed to a porridge brewed by the local population from the powder found in the pods of the Camel Thorn trees. Kathu was founded in the late 60's early 70's. Kathu is perfectly in between Upington and Vryburg with about a 2-hour drive to each. Kimberley is a 3-hour drive away. Kenhardt (founded 1868) is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. This little town is about 120 km fromUpington, the largest town in the area. History On December 27, 1868, special magistrate Maximillian Jackson with a police contingent was sent to act against the Griquas in the area. The Griqua's anti-colonial resistance had erupted into an open conflict. Jackson arrived in Kenhardt and set up camp under a giant camelthorn tree. Kenhardt has been, for a long time the most remote settlement in the North-Western Cape. With time the town developed from under this tree, becoming a municipality in 1909. The Hartbees River, with its many sweet thorn trees, provides a green belt irrigated by the Rooiberg Dam. Kenhardt is famous for being at the heart of the Dorper sheep-fa...

We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point. There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive. If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings...
The Margaret River region runs down the Western Australian coastline for over 80 miles, and stretches inland for a further 20. Busselton marks the beginning of one of Australia’s most scenic drives, Caves Road, which gets its name from the incredible limestone caves which honeycomb the region. Caves Road winds inland, through picturesque villages and historic timber towns, before arriving at the region’s main settlement, Margaret River. Surrounded by coasts on three sides, and enjoying virtually rain-free summers, as a wine-growing region, Margaret River has been compared to France’s famous Bordeaux region. Cruise from cellar door to cellar door, sampling some of the most exciting Chardonnays, Shirazs and Cabernet Sauvignons on the planet. At Margaret River’s northern end is Cape Natur...
Stretching from the epicentre of South Africa to the wild, untamed West Coast of the continent and northwards to the Namibian desert lies the Northern Cape: A contrasting landscape of field upon field of brilliantly coloured wild flowers and age-old lava mountains interspersed with sandy plains and fertile green river valleys. The location of South Africa's diamond rush towns which sprung up during the last century in and around Kimberley as well as several Anglo/Boer war battle sites including the famous Magersfontein. The location of Southern Africa's largest mountain desert, the Richtersveld, which slopes down to the eerie mist-bound western coast, once the entrance point of pirates, renegades and adventurers. The heart of the region is Mt Warning, created 23 million years ago when the Tweed Volcano erupted and reshaped the land. It was an event which blessed the entire region with incredibly fertile soils, deep forests, and a unique geology, which many believe gives the region its special energy. The Northern Rivers begins at Tweed Heads and unrolls southwards for over one hundred miles, taking in some of the purest beaches and most laid-back coastal towns in the world. NRESi Colloquium: Archaeological Research at Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa. Dr. Francesco Berna, Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University. Wonderwerk Cave, situated at the base of a low foothill on the eastern flank of the Kuruman Hills in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. The cave is an enormous dolomitic cavity (ca. 140 m long, 3–7 m high, 11–26 m wide) that has yielded paleontological and archaeological deposits spanning the last ca. 2.0 million years. The lengthy stratigraphic sequence in the cave provides suitable contexts for dating, while good preservation of faunal and botanical remains offers excellent proxies for paleoenvironmental studies. This makes Wonderwerk an archaeological and paleontolo...
