The Umbrella Revolution, sometimes used interchangeably with Umbrella Movement, was a series of sit-in street protests that occurred in Hong Kong from 26 September to 15 December 2014. The protests began after the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC) came to a decision regarding proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system. The decision was widely seen to be highly restrictive, and tantamount to the Chinese Communist Party's pre-screening of the candidates for the Hong Kong Chief Executive election in 2017 before the candidates are presented to the Hong Kong electorate.
Students led a strike against the NPCSC's decision beginning on 22 September 2014, and the Hong Kong Federation of Students and Scholarism started protesting outside the government headquarters on 26 September 2014. On 28 September, the Occupy Central with Love and Peace movement announced that they would begin their civil disobedience campaign immediately. Demonstrations began outside the Hong Kong Government headquarters, and members of what would eventually be called the Umbrella Movement occupied several major city intersections. Protesters blocked both east–west arterial routes in northern Hong Kong Island near Admiralty. Police tactics (including the use of tear gas) and attacks on protesters by opponents that included triad members, triggered more citizens to join the protests, occupying Causeway Bay and Mong Kok. The number of protesters peaked at more than 100,000 at any given time, overwhelming the police thus causing containment errors.
An umbrella or parasol is a folding canopy supported by wooden or metal ribs, which is mounted on a wooden, metal or plastic pole. It is designed to protect a person against rain or sunlight. The word "umbrella" typically refers to a device used for protection from rain. The word parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun. Often the difference is the material used for the canopy; some parasols are not waterproof. Umbrella canopies may be made of fabric or flexible plastic.
Umbrellas and parasols are primarily hand-held portable devices sized for personal use. The largest hand-portable umbrellas are golf umbrellas. Umbrellas can be divided into two categories: fully collapsible umbrellas, in which the metal pole supporting the canopy retracts, making the umbrella small enough to fit in a handbag, and non-collapsible umbrellas in which the support pole cannot retract; only the canopy can be collapsed. Another distinction can be made between manually operated umbrellas and spring-loaded automatic umbrellas which spring open at the press of a button.
A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in political power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time when the population rises up in revolt against the current authorities. Aristotle described two types of political revolution:
Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.
Scholarly debates about what does and does not constitute a revolution center on several issues. Early studies of revolutions primarily analyzed events in European history from a psychological perspective, but more modern examinations include global events and incorporate perspectives from several social sciences, including sociology and political science. Several generations of scholarly thought on revolutions have generated many competing theories and contributed much to the current understanding of this complex phenomenon.
In September 2014, VICE News documented the birth of the so-called Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. When students organized a weeklong strike to protest China’s handling of the local election process, the government responded with tear gas. Thousands of Hong Kong residents took to the city’s streets in solidarity with the students and the protesters occupied several major roads for weeks on end. Nearly two months into the occupation, the demands and resolve of the protesters remained unchanged. They started to become fatigued and divided against each other, however, and public support for their cause began to decline. The movement was under immense pressure to either escalate their action, or to retreat and give back the streets. When VICE News returned to Hong Kong near the end of 2014 t...

"extracted" from The US president's Barack Obama speaks for HK's Umbrella Revolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane on November 15, 2014. THE FULL SPEECH: Today, people in Hong Kong are speaking out for their universal rights. And so here in Asia and around the world, America supports free and fair elections, because citizens must be free to choose their own leaders -- as in Thailand where we are urging a quick return to inclusive, civilian rule. We support freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, a free and open Internet, strong civil societies, because the voices of the people must be heard and leaders must be held accountable -- even though it’s uncomfortable sometimes. I promise you, if you lead a country, there are times where you are a...

This is the pinnacle of an umbrella revolution over 2000 years human history. The groundbreaking design enables you to fold the umbrella “inside out” and operate it confined spaces. No more getting wet when entering a car during heavy rains, you can now easily open and collapse your umbrella in limited space. The patented technology fortifies the structure of the umbrella ribs and the design of the umbrella handle. The structure of the umbrella ribs are shaped and move upward to inversely fold the umbrella. The fiberglass ribs and mesh ventilation can withstand winds. The C-Shape handle design allows your hands to be free to use your smartphone, hold a child or pet, carry trash, shopping bags or do other concurrent tasks while use umbrella in the rain.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In 1997, the longtime British colony of Hong Kong was handed over to China with the understanding that it would retain relative autonomy under the concept of "one country, two systems." But last month, as part of the so-called Umbrella Revolution, Hong Kongers began vocally demanding Beijing stay out of their political affairs and grant the democracy they say they were promised with the handover. VICE News traveled to Hong Kong and embedded with the students leading the pro-democracy movement. As protestors marched through and occupied city parks and streets, police fired tear gas and became physically violent. Hong Kong, long a reliably stable world financial center, was being rocked by unrest. Watch Now - "The Sunflower...

On September 28 tens of thousands of student-led Chinese took to the Streets of Hong Kong to protest Beijing-imposed limitations on voting rights. They were met with police tear gas, which the protesters warded off with umbrellas, declaring that they would not be moved. China expert Elizabeth Economy tells Jim Zirin that she sees little hope of true reform, but is guardedly optimistic that the “occupy central” movement will produce some degree of change, and not end in Tiananmen-style violence .
