NP225 The Savage Young Taterbug- Shadow of Marlboro Man 1 Sided Silkscreen Picture Disc 12"

It took too long, its a little too short to satisfy the thirst, but maybe its not so bad to leave a person wanting more, regardless its finally here The Shadow of Marlboro Man by Charles Free The Savage Young Taterbug. A mythology created by fact and fiction surrounded by love, hate, and all things in between hovers around the burnt out scrappy charismatic aura of Charles Free. A soul shinned by a life beaten against itself, always searching for new magic in the futility and self-destruction of Americas great black top oblivion. All that living, myth, and aura is distilled to perfection in these five songs. With a little help from some key friends Charles has managed to create his masterpiece of the thus far, maybe never again, hoping for more, because this short release is that damn good. Some of you might not get it but for those that do and for those that have followed the journey prior the waiting has been worth it. All the dirt, fuzz, and noise has been rendered into the atmosphere that gives these songs that something special. A clarity is now evident, songs now stand out, the poetry now speaks, and the Marlboro Man has casts his shadow. LISTEN

NP220 Broken Water- Wrought LP

It was a nice surprise to get an email from old friends and one of my favorite bands I ever got the chance to work with Broken Water concerning a new LP entitled Wrought that they were looking for the right label for. Fast forward a few months following a good bit of work and even more time and energy put in by the band and in our hands is Wrought the bands newest and finest LP. Broken Water isn’t new to the scene, they still call Olympia WA home after years of crossing the country on tours, taking the music on the road and into the studio showing a persistence and heart often rare in the immediacy and short duration cycles of the internet age. They still take the risks of sacrificing for the music, for the message, for the experience of creating and the depth and meaning of this experience isn’t lost in the result. Wrought to these ears is Broken Waters deepest record with the most feeling, not an easy feat after creating some much great music prior. Wrought was recorded and mixed with Steve Fisk (Nirvana/Beat Happening etc.) and sores to sonic heights even bigger, deeper, and more expansive then the other releases. Still present is the duality of the sound, the soft catchy melodies and the sonic heaviness that stands as a contrast and works well to compliment the duality of emotion in the melodies and the questions and commentary and lyrics propose. Wrought is another great addition to an already great discography by Broken Water. LISTEN

NP200 The Garment District- If You Take Your Magic Slow LP

If You Take Your Magic Slow is the debut full-length LP from multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Barons The Garment District, with help from a few friends and family, her cousin Lucy Blehar provides lead vocals throughout. If You Take Your Magic Slow is very much a structured album with its diverse tracklist meticulously strung together. A mix of surreal instrumentals and subtle turns conjures outdoor walks in transitional atmospheres and landscapes, nature hikes in the city, sunny days that are okay with becoming cloudy, warm music full of feeling that remains comfortably easy going despite the meticulous care given to its sophisticated orchestration and arrangements. This eclecticism creates something complex yet accessible, loose but direct. Baron mixes pastoral psychedelia with artful minimalist post-punk experimentation and a subtle approach to library music, soundtracks as pop with just enough droney dreamy color to fill it all in. If You Take Your Magic Slow doesnt follow any templates or gimmicks: its focus is on being true to its musicality, songwriting, and honest approach to compelling contemporary easy listening something we are quite fond of. A perfect summertime record. LISTEN

NP190 Deep Freeze Mice- Best Of 1979-1988 LP

The Deep Freeze Mice where an English post punk/weirdo, pop/DIY band from Leicester; they released ten albums between 1979 and 1989 on their own labels Mole Embalming and the still running Cordelia Records. The band also gained a bit of post existence notice by their inclusion on the Nurse With Wound list and through the Messthetics compilation series. The original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Alan Jenkins, bassist Mick Bunnage (of the Statics), keyboardist Sherree Lawrence, and drummer Graham Summers (also of the Statics) which remained intact until the release of the bands third record, The Gates of Lunch. After the departure of Summers and the acquisition of replacement Pete Gregory, the lineup remained until their breakup in 1989. Leader Jenkins (who was also involved with the Chrysanthemums and Ruths Refrigerator during the existence of Deep Freeze Mice) continued afterwards in the Creams and the Thurston Lava Tube while maintaining Cordelia Records. In origin, the Deep Freeze Mice started out in the informal, confidently scrappy mindset of the post punk era creating often upbeat goofy songs speaking to political topics, surrealist imagery, and science fiction. The most interesting thing about the bands sound was a distinct approach to a kind of British classic rock sensibility with subtle flourishes of psychedelic ambiance which, when combined with their punky way of doing things, created a unique approach falling someplace between the ramshackle pop sound of The Television Personalities and Bowie style weirdoisms. This LP serves as a new release, a collection of the best of the Deep Freeze Mice. It was compiled by guitarist/vocalist Alan Jenkins. Original Deep Freeze vinyl fetches high collector prices and we felt like a collection was necessary to re-introduce a long overlooked band whose material spanned many albums in such a diverse way. We hope you enjoy and appreciate The Deep Freeze Mice as much as we do and that this compilation provides a starting point to then look back into the bands deep catalog. LISTEN

NP180 Merchandise- Totale Nite LP

There isn't going to be any shortage of words on the new Merchandise full length LP Totale Nite but something some of those words might miss out on is the special uniting and friendship between Merchandise and Night-People this record finds as its backdrop. The prior Merchandise LP, Children of Desire was a stunner but we were paying attention, listening and talking about working together even before those songs took proper shape, knowing full well the beauty and capacity of greatness Merchandise would fulfill unconcerned with any attention from the outside. Fast forward through passing meetings on the road via tours, time spent up late at the Night-People HQ jamming records and talking into the early hours and things started to get closer to the materialization of working together. Tampa FL is a different sort of place to be from then the major cultural cities of influence and that is something we understand and gravitate towards at Night-People. Sometimes the more isolated locations produce more uniqueness in the absence of stimulation or bigger opportunity. With Merchandise you can't just look at the surface because there is so much more in the collective spirit of the surrounding art and music, solo projects, additional bands, the music that came before in its richness and depth. Totale Nite is the distillation of experience, working hard, thinking deep while letting the spirit move forward unhindered. This record captures so much beyond any kind of obvious influence focusing the self-produced and recorded atmosphere into an even more distinct Merchandise sound, dreamy dense post-punk drifter ballads that are as textured and dynamic as they are laden with pop sensibility. Sonic Boom provided a stellar detailed mastering job and the Wet Hair design team facilitated perhaps their best design effort yet to finish off the final details for one of the finest albums Night-People will surely ever release. NP233 Zina "Furniture" C20

Zina came across my radar last year at a local DIY show and instantly won me over, the progress since has been dramatic despite the very strong start and Zina has quickly become one of if not my favorite local musician and performer. Furniture is her debut release and hopefully just the beginning of many more to come. Zina grew up in Guinea and lived between there and France before finding her way to the US, landing in Minneapolis due to a family connection here. She grew up taking in French Indie Pop and also is heavily influenced by Disco and cinema. The goal of Furniture for her was to create a kind of soundtrack, pop songs that could be substituted into the movies she loves, with a comedic, social, playful, and melancholic soul to them. She told me she imagined songs created from the diary of a divorced housewife that still had IT. Zina has a special voice that puts extra shine on these already great pop songs. Dont miss out.

NP232 Villoria Blue "Vespers" C32

Villoria Blue is a collaborative duo between Jeff Lane the Night-People alumni behind Tereshkova and his partner vocalist Lesley Dixon. Villoria Blue has many qualities that connect it to Tereshkova in approach; an experimental view towards pop melodies, dreamy atmosphere, and vintage synth explorations but stands apart in its sparse scenic almost serene creation of sound. Villoria blue has the unique ability to sound both very contemporary and ambiguous of its time of creation at the same time. An intimate romantic sounding release with lots of dynamics and excellent production and clarity. A truly uniquely mysterious take on dreamy synth pop and a great release that you shouldnt pass on.

NP231 Los Greys "Angel Lust" C32

Los Greys began in Boston MA in 2014 as an ambient collage project between friends Nick Rocco and Jeff Coyne. After the creation of their first album Family Acid Baptism created from tape loops and samples they began to take their interest in atmosphere, texture and a collage approach to sound and began to apply it to more of a full band sound framework of pop. Angel Lust is their second album and was created over the course of a year using home recordings, tape samples and studio work with John Brown of World Cup. Mastered by Ryan Power in Burlington VT Angel Lust is a great sophomore album of weirdo indie pop with lots of well-arranged harmonies, lush atmosphere, interesting instrument layering and general spot on song writing.

NP230 Collector "s/t" C26

Long time experimental musician Jason Campbell of Newcastle Australia latest project Collector took shape after he dissolved his prior synth project Stitched Vision. Collectors modular synth compositions channel elements of industrial, noise, and dark atmospheric techno to create complex machine grooves that evolve in caustic, frenetic ways that create high levels of tension and intensity but dont ignore musicality or subtlety. A very distinct take on dark electronics that is hard to pin down in its imagination and ingenuity towards minimalist electronic rhythms. A great companion tape to the newest Roman Nails cassette also from down under and related in that Cooper Bowman of Roman Nails recently released Collectors debut LP on his AU label Drawing Heat.
LISTEN

NP229 Roman Nails "Chiseler" C20

Cooper Bowmans Roman Nails project from Melbourne Down Under is back in the Night-People fold to follow up his prior cassette Artificial Sense with a new one titled Chiseler. Roman Nails continues on the path of analog electronic rhythmic explorations that evolve in subtle ways building and collapsing tension to create micro minimalist dance floor slow burners. Roman Nails uses some classic drum machine sounds to great effect as they are combined with repetitive synth melodies and dark background atmosphere interesting poly rhythms take shape and seem to bounce around the confined tension of the musical mood. Another nice addition to Bowmans output both as a musician and as a curator with his excellent labels Altered States and Drawing Heat.
LISTEN

NP228 Hylidae "s/t" C32

Hylidae is a new music project from Saint Louis by Jon Burkhart. Relatively new to pushing his music to the outside world Jon steps into his creations as Hylidae a little bit green but it sure doesn’t sound like it with the excellent production value and seamlessly blended eclectic nature of this release. Hylidae covers a lot of ground on these six tracks that are compositionally complex and dense in the selection of sounds and the way they ebb and flow out of each other. Hylidae has a high regard for how to layer textural sound elements to high light the drama embedded in this hybrid electronic dance music. No approach seems off the table yet the results are so clear and contained. Jon even delivers some nice vocals to music that might not usually expect them to great effect. Not limited to studio creations witnessing Hylidae live yielded no drop off in performance of these excellent tracks. A very high mark for this newcomer.

NP227 Discalce "Mangrove Estuary" C36

Discalce is one of many musical and artistic projects created by Philip Maier whose best known project Lack has prior releases on great labels like Hot Releases, Tone Log, and Phils own Grovl Tapes. Lack creates interesting contemporary techno heavily filtered with a mindset towards experimental electronics and while the presence of Lacks minimalist aesthetics are present in Discalce compositions this new project much more embodies a focus on the Dub pillars of bass, reverb and delay. Discalce is heavily drum and rhythm oriented but operates at a quicker more frenetic pace and has a layered drum sound approach that sets it apart from many of the UK dub step classics these songs could be compared too. Discalce is a fresh take on pushing modern electronic dance music structures through dub effects and stays clear of emulation of the past by focusing on how Dub aesthetics can effect Phil’s already established evolving musical identity. Highly Recommended.

NP222 Ryan Garbes "2012-2014 Life is a Bootleg" C42

Ryan Garbes long time Night-People collaborator, Wet Hair drummer and visual artist of excellence returns with his best solo material to date. Life is a Bootleg is an album recorded over the course of time between 2012- 2014 and contains contributions from Justin Thye and Charles Free (The Savage Young Taterbug). This is Ryans broadest and brightest solo recording and clocking in at 40 minutes stands as an adventurous and complex album. Juggling a large variety of sounds stretching across a vast sonic palate Garbes balances things in a way that evokes many of Brian Enos more pop focused work as well as experimentalist rockers like Neil Michael Hagerty or Sonic Boom. A psychedelic album without any typical trappings just endless amounts of upbeat dreamy melodies and interesting layers of sound. A great album that shows the work Ryan has put in over the years honing his craft and recording technique.
LISTEN

NP226 Suspect "Faux Empath" C32

Ryan Beck is Suspect an electronic musician who has former ties in Iowa City and now resides in Chicago. Suspect has a very refined sound for a new project just starting to push its music into the world. Faux Empath isn’t a bumpy ride but a smooth concourse that moves through a sonic space inhabited by an almost limitless supply of shifting sounds phasing in and out of themselves and the larger journey of a particular track. Suspect in a sonic way explores relationships between human consciousness and technology and how those things evolve together along with other minds and information pathways connected by technology. The music represents these ideas well offering a recording that continues to open up new listening experiences on repeat listens. Stay tuned for more from Ryan Beck and Suspect in the future as this is a great first effort in more exposure for an interesting project.
LISTEN

NP224 Unhappybirthday "Schauer" C42

The Wismar Germany trio Unhappybirthday return to Night-People with a follow up to the excellent Kraken cassette we released prior. Unahappybirthday have spent the time in between releases honing their dreamy upbeat take on melodic post punk. Falling a bit into an early Factory records mode Unhappybirthday use punchy drum machine to lock down the mechanical foundation of a sound that then uses bright crystalline guitar lines to create contrast with somber submerged bass and synth fuzz. Lead man Daniel Jas vocals stand out even more this time around. His subtle smooth baritone sung in German give these songs an extra quality of distinction that adds something unique and warm to the sound. This is a great album by an ambitious band with a nice balance between ultra-catchy upbeat bangers and more moody atmospheric tracks. Repeat listens come easy and Unhappybirthday draw on the endless mechanical German beat using its classic appeal to create new great melodic pop songs.

NP223 Stefan Christensen "Isreal (Its More of the Same)" C32

Stefan Christensen was the lead man in long running New Haven Connecticut arty DIY punk outfit the Estrogen Highs. This solo release finds Stefan stepping into different waters but the course from Estrogen Highs to this material seems logical in that this material explores a more abstracted discordant and subtle area of the post punk paradigm. Kiwi influences such as This Kind of Punishment, the Dead C, Alastair Galbraith and the Xpressway label sound stick out along with the Mike Rep Ohio scene of weirdo rock and the general goodness of early UK DIY as prime vantage points. The influences are present but they don’t diminish this release that feels like a dialogue and a step forward not a rehashing of the past. The label received a copy of this material unexpected in the mail and the excitement was immediate concerning the scope of these recordings, the song writing, the flow of the sounds and content, the recording quality. This is a perfect release for its aesthetic and approach.

NP221 Daisy Chains "Above Board" C26

Daisy Chains is a Minneapolis trio comprised of Elizabeth Bambery, Walker Neudorff, and Allison Gunderson and contains members of long running local touring acts Miami Dolphins, and Solid Attitude. Daisy Chains minimalist post punk leanings intersect slow country drawl and rock and roll swagger in interesting ways to create something unique that also nods to greats such as Dead Moon, Beat Happening, and Opal. Bamberys vocals take center stage with a gentle warble that provides an intimacy that works very well coupled with lyrical topics often focused on troubled love and loss. This cassette is a great introduction to a promising new Minneapolis band that is winning over local crowds and press alike and has a bright future ahead of them.

NP219 Annalibera "loveil" C30

Annalibera is a project from Des Moines Iowa fronted by Anna Gebhardt a classically trained vocalist and pianist who grew up in rural Nebraska. Manifested prior as a full band and now being explored as a solo project Annalibera is a distinct new voice in the Midwestern music landscape. With loveil Anna has stretched her music into contemplative soundscapes, using noisy atmospherics to contrast the soaring melodic qualities of her strong and beautiful voice. The haunted intimacy and lonely honesty of loveil feels unique and fresh to these well-worn ears. Meeting Anna through a mutual friend was a bit of a revelation in how much commonality was present between Annas current musical path and Night-Peoples origins and evolution, something that makes it extra exciting and nice to be working with her. Special thanks to the Warm Gospel label for letting us re-release this wonderful music. Expect more great things from Annalibera in the near future.

NP217 Roman Nails "Artificial Sense" C26

Roman Nails is the current electronic music project of Cooper Bowman of Melbourne Australia who has spent time with other projects such as Flat Fix and the Altered States Cassette Label. Cooper orbits around much of the Melbourne scene that we respect greatly from afar such as Total Control, Dick Diver, and Night-People alumni such as Fingers and Superstar. Its always hard to describe that subtle IT factor that a particular band or music project has, those little things that set it apart somehow from other similar music or that which makes the music stand out to these ears. Roman Nails has a special quality, something that is humble and mysterious. The project is based around analog electronics and rides its own vein of raw minimalism that doesnt fall into getting to blown out and focuses on retaining detail. Distinct melodies and synth sounds glide over evolving rhythms to create hypnotic compositions not overly oriented to one stylistic approach or genre tag. Another sweet surprise from Australia.

NP218 Germ Class "S/T" C26

Germ Class is a collaboration between the mysterious German Army who has worked with Night-People in the past and Dunes the LA based dreamy pop trio with prior releases on Post Present Medium. The collaboration rests a bit closer to Germany Armys past work then Dunes but its a collaboration that is very much a sum of its parts in outcome and keeps with a focused but experimental approach overall. Loose drum patterns form the base for drifting vocals pages that balance between the industrial grit and darkness of German Army and the more melodic ethereal qualities of Dunes work. Overall the music sounds a bit like the less harsh aspects of Throbbing Gristles catalog meeting up with the more experimental sides of early Cocteau Twins. An interesting listen throughout that fits nicely into the eclectic nature of the Night-People catalog.

NP216 Free Music "Kool Toad/Great Music" C30

Free Music/Kool Toad is William Statler who grew up in the Twin Cities and kicked it in a few bands before transplanting to call Seattle home. Some mutual friends and Twin Cities connections along with William sending us a demo in the mail started the process towards working together and this release taking shape. The demo we got from William was one of those exclamation points that rarely turns up in the mail and instantly impressed. Free Music is eclectic but focused musically, riding a bit of an outsider thread and mutating strains of techno, acid house, and various synth pop strains into something totally unique upbeat and pop music memorable in the best ways. This release is meticulously crafted with utmost variety and consideration towards detail but is generated largely from improvisational methods. Beyond being a friend and artist we are working with Williams music is some of the best being made in the contemporary context and we are excited for what hes cooking up for the near future.

NP215 Blossuming Mums "Dithering Mornings" C30

Blossoming Mums is a recent project created by long time Night-People alumni and friend Robert Robinson who has been holding it down in Western Massachusetts for many years now with his excellent band Sore Eros. Blossoming Mums is a collaboration between Robert and Amanda Freeman of the Baby Barnyard project. The duo creates music that is obviously part of the Sore Eros aesthetic but stretches out in a different direction to be more ambient, drifting, and hazy in its minimalist psychedelic pop sensibilities and is very reflective of an early morning or late evening Western Mass country landscape. Blossoming Mums let the spaces and drawn out portions of sounds speak just as much as the rich deep melodies they create. Great well recorded polished dreamy music for summer or fall chilling out.

NP214 Principality "Glass" C26

When Night-People packed up and moved to the Twin Cities one of the first bands on our radar was Minneapolis trio Claps and the bands front man Patrick Donohoe who was a standout person in terms of welcoming us with open arms and showing much kindness, gratitude, and general positive energy towards the label. Principality is one of a few excellent projects Pat is involved with exploring different aspects of post punk, new wave, weirdo pop, industrial, minimal synth and all things beyond and in between. Pat is joined in Principality by friends and scene vets Teddy Borth, Mark Matejcek and Ollie Moltaji to create a band that rides the darker more romantic sides of post punk to dynamic effect without any sense of pretentiousness or fashion getting in the way of the music. Recorded just down the block from Night People HQ by Matt Castore at a Harder Commune Studio, this release showcases some of the best of what the Twin Cities has to offer.

NP213 Boy Harsher "Lesser Man" C32

Dark electronic duo Boy Harsher is Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller who reside in Western MA via Savannah GA. The band forming in Savannah fits with the gritty heavy EBM and Industrial approach to dance music Boy Harsher are flirting with, a sound that evokes images of a dark romantic sultry environment. Jae Matthews confessional and emotionally delivered vocals work as a nice ethereal and spontaneous foil to Agugstus Mullers precise pounding poly rhythmic machine grooves to create dance music that is as heavy as it is soulful. Recorded at Dollhouse studios by Peter Mavrogeorgis and released prior by the Soft Science label, Night People is hoping to spread the word a bit further about any already great band with this release.

NP205 Moon Dice "My Motel Room" C36

Moon Dice are a new Melbourne AU quartet with connections to other long running bands Ancients and Love of Diagrams etc. Moon Dice are another excellent addition to the already great crop of Melbourne jangly rock and pop bands. Moon Dice have a distinctive sound built around soft vocals, subtle psychedelic guitar flourishes and driving but not heavy drumming. Moon Dice have a bit of a new wave feel without sounding new wave or referential to an 80’s retro sound, they still stand firmly as a guitar driven rock band with plenty of get up and go. Our favorite thing about Moon Dice is the interesting and intricate interplay of instrumentation that creates plenty of room for the music to be noticed or listened to in different ways or different moods. Great release from another fun Aussie band we are glad they sent it our way.

NP208 Trailblazer "Guyonetics" C36

It has been several years but solo operator Coleman Guyon and his project Trailblazer is back with a new cassette release in the Night-People fold. Guyonetics was recorded in Treviso, Italy and has plenty of Euro synth sound for that information to add some flavor to the overall image of the release. Still present is the vibrant but minimal electronic Kraut rock sound of previous releases but perhaps refined a bit further is the sense of space in the music the minimalism refined to create subtlety developing tension and release that allows these tracks to breath and drift in an almost infinite combination of repetitions, music that feels like it could go on forever always turning back into itself recreating evolving and returning without becoming tiresome.

NP209 Silent Girlfriend "Backstabbing Female Supremacist" C36

This is a heavy one a reissue of a tour tape by Natalee Decker, Oakland by way of Chicago mainstay who was part of the excellent and now defunct trio Uncanny Valley. Silent Girlfriend continues through some of the same territory in its sonically driving electronic dance oriented synth approach but grinds much harder in an industrial music way then Uncanny Valley. Silent Girlfriend hits heavy and hard with blown out flourishes of arpeggiated psychedelic electronica and plodding drugged out dungeon techno. Raw dystopian music with big heavy hooks with enough groove to move the warehouse dancefloor. Great stuff.
LISTEN

NP210 Tereshkova "Pelagic" C52

Tereshkova is the musical project of Jeff Lane, music that is vast in sound, ambiance, texture and melody. Dream pop seems as fitting a tag as any but the overall variety present in this work goes beyond that. In the Night-People back catalog similarities can be found in the approach of Sore Eros or even the Garment District. A hazy pastoral romantic psychedelic sound guided by synths, guitars, and piles of effects that sits as close to being soundtrack as it does to being individual songs. A handful of really great underground cassette releases are floating around by Tereshkova but hopefully this Night-People release does some work to bolster the public awareness of this project and the expansive music it generates.

NP211 Gem Jones "Wurm Man Dubiosity" C26

Gem Jones is a long time Night-People friend who we trust to be truly weird aesthetically and forward moving musically something that is still close to the heart of the label. Gem Jones has been hanging out in Kansas City lately keeping it pretty loner working on wild tunes like those represented here in this very distinct cassette release. Still present is the amalgamation of oldies reminiscent melodies, rocksteady almost reggae rhythms, outsider rock, funky jazzy stuff, and a whole lot of can’t be pinned down. This release showcases Gem Jones abilities at full strength as a multi- instrumentalist and arranger. There is so much going on here but things are clear and distinct, focused and thought out. Just an epic release overall, really special in its originality and weirdness while retaining direction, musicality and heaps of pop sensibility.

NP207 Sandy "s/t" C24

Its been very rare that a demo shows up in the mail or in the inbox and ends up as a release but such is the case with new NYC trio Sandy which speaks to the content and potential of this group. This is an impressive debut release by a band that is still a mystery even to the label. Sandy creates soulful atmospheric minimalist synth pop that is contemporary in its approach and comes with a depth rare for a band that is so new. Sandy has a sound that is very isolated feeling almost icy but retains necessary warmth, a sense of something heartfelt and sincere being expressed in a way that keeps the sound from feeling harsh or devoid of hopefulness. Sandy is more serene then dark and the subtle qualities of the approach give the music something special to make it stand out upon repeat listens. Great stuff from a promising new band.

NP206 David West "Drop Out of Collage" C32

Perth Australia native David West is a long time Night-People pen pal and friend who has been quite prolific over the years creating music with a variety of bands including Total Control and Rank Xerox. His main projects Rat Columns and Lace Curtain have been great in both recorded output and live performance recently taking on USA touring. This tape falls closest to Rat Columns in terms of sound and aesthetics but has a distinct vision in terms of its collage oriented arrangements speaking to Davids broad musical approach and expression. Weird atmospheric washy tape and electronics experiments intersect with shimmering jangly post punk pop. The recording is really something special being concerned with a high level of detail in terms of the stereo sonic output. Couldnt recommend this tape more, it really sums up so many of Night-Peoples interests and aesthetics in one unique release. This is experimental music that retains its musicality and pop sensibility at a high level.

NP205 Jovontaes "Awaken Next to the Great Salt Lake" C32

Jovotaes are long running Lexington Kentucky skater weirdos who create zoned out mostly instrumental psych rock in the vein of greats like Agitation Free, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Trad Gras Och Stenar. This release is a bit more subtle and mysterious sounding them some prior outings. At times it rides very deep, spacious and subdued but active constantly building to more riffs and evolving transitions like sets of waves coming in to shore breaking slightly different every time. Very rooted in the language of riffs, they say a lot without saying anything in any literal way at all.

NP204 Faze Island "s/t" C24

Faze Island is New Orleans resident Mike Mayfield. Mike is a member of dark synth pop band ((Pressures)) and spends time creating a variety of other intricate technically focused analogy synth music. Having a rich collection of analog synths, drum machines and electronic gear Mike is an expert in the tools of his trade. Faze Island channels Mikes sound into a sort of retro fashion of minimalist electronic pop and dub and the result ends up being a kind of new wave bossa nova a hybrid of Cluster, Antenna, and Prince Jammys Computerized Dub. This is pointed rhythmic music that is subtle and dreamy. Faze Island is distinct in that it isnt attempting to be roots or even digi dancehall in its application of dub ideas but perhaps uses those influences with the very natural and subtle approach of Mikes compositions to create something separate and new.

NP203 Jerome "Up 4 Daze" C26

Jerome is Jeremy Harris formerly known as Lazy Magnet. A long time ripper of epic variety who has spent as much time as anyone on DIY tours shape shifting between styles and environments. Harris has had an intense output of the highest standards that to often has flown to far under the radar for the quality and originality of the approach and product. This tape is a reflection of recent outputs in the deep house and techno fields of Harris work. A recent live observation of Jerome left me floored, stunned by the rich depth of sound of the set and the detail and almost endless variety presented in the composition that had the whole room loosing minds, dancing, hanging from the rafters to or like myself simply listening in awe.

NP202 Ruby Pins/HITS "Split" C36

Ruby Pins/HITS is a split cassette release of former Grass Widow drummer Lillian Marrings solo and now primary outlet Ruby Pins and Ruby Pins sometimes contributor and friend Jennifer Weisbergs solo project HITS. This release finds Ruby Pins stepping forward with a great deal of space in the song writing. These often drum lite songs strum away into intricate structures blending with vocal passages to create a release that is quite different from prior Ruby Pins outings that had a bit more in common with the upbeat rock oriented post punk jangle of Grass Widow. Perhaps recent time spent in the Pacific Northwest have flavored Ruby Pins to be a bit more loner and dreamy sounding. Variety and change are good things and this is great material regardless that fits in nicely with Lillians prior musical output. Hits mirrors and aesthetically sits with Ruby Pins well riding a similar mid paced riff oriented lite on the drumming approach that focuses much attention to atmosphere and the intricacies of minimalist dreamy post punk pop. HITS incorporates interesting keyboard arrangements as well helping to highlight the distinct intimate weirdo pop vibes of the sound. Underneath the Nile and Wavy Lace are really great standout tunes that have been very enjoyable repeat listens

NP201 The Savage Young Taterbug "Journeymans Cheddar" C16

Charles Free is back with his fifth Night-People tape which sits as a bit of a teaser/ precursor for an upcoming studio style recorded 12inch coming out in early 2014 on Night-people. We can safely say the 12inch will be an absolute stunner and turn some additional ears to Charlies tunes and surprise a few old listeners with its clarity and song writing. Journeymans Cheddar however keeps things weird. Created for a recent late summer/fall tour with long time tour partner Tracey Trance, the two sat down in the new NP HQ in Saint Paul for a couple days and assembled some extra tour merch and this release is a document of that. Tracey Trance even provides some extra vocals and effects on the psycho two lane blacktop Wolf Man scorcher Disc Jockey Inside Corona Bottle. The looney tunes collage style is even more ramped up with this release with all kinds of crazy sounds, noises and samples flying around smeared all over everything. Plenty of scorched Americana rolling on the tape once again, Northern Cali weed farm dreaming and open road hippie bus filth burping out the tail pipe. Cleaned up and Mastered by Cole Weiland.

NP194 Beat Detectives "Music About Time" C45

Beat Detectives are Twin Cities based trio comprised of Chris Hontos (also of Dreamweapon and Food Pyramid), artist Oakley Tapola, and NYC artist Aaron Anderson. One of the most eclectic and wild Night-People releases Beat Detectives have crafted something really special on this release pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance/party music into all kinds of eccentric interesting places with piles of samples and references hiding out in the midst. Plenty of slippery but bumpin downtown style funky vibes at play with a really good dubbed out approach that doesnt get to hazy and lets things ride with enough clarity to make all the pieces step out and take notice. Tapolas often times deadpan weirdo rants and vocals work really well compositionally and are affected and blended into the mix in just the right ways. Hontos really did a great job mixing the release and Cole Weiland adds a nice touch as well on mastering duties. A little bit of everything going on, Acid House, Funk, Reggae, Dub, Dancehall, Psychedelic Electronics, Trance, it seems to never end and thats a good thing. Expect big things from this group in the near future.

NP199 Fatti Frances "Lie To Me" C52

Fatti Frances is the solo project of Melbourne musician Raquel Soiler and Lie to Me is her debut studio full length. Fatti came to our attention via our Melbourne pal Stacey Wilsons (Rites Wild) label Heavy Lows with a really stellar release called Sweaty. Perhaps a bit of a departure or new aesthetic territory for Night-People we were so in love with Sweaty that we decided to ask Raquel if she would like to do a release on NP. Raquel has spent time playing drums in Aussie bands the Ancients, Oh! Belgium, and Jemima Jemima among others but took a departure aesthetically to do create Fatti Frances. Overall Fatti sits someplace between catchy RnB pop songs and left field electronic experiments. Not shying away from a soulful Diva vibe these recordings are quite clean and clear presenting the full force of Fatti Frances without any shyness or hazy layering to disguise what is going on. This is bold music and a refreshing contemporary take on RnB and Dance music. Hopefully Fatti gets her due and more of an audience outside Australia starts to take notice.

NP198 The Ukiah Drag "Variations of Candy" C36

The Ukiah Drag is a crew of former Florida rippers who relocated to Providence by way of Boston in-between origin and current home. With a deep and prosperous former band linage (Neon Blud, Cult Ritual, American Snakeskin, Diet Coke Heads) The Ukiah Drag as would be expected offer something special that is already being noticed after some recent touring with fellow dark psychedelic rockers Destruction Unit and a really great prior tape out on Ascetic House. Its interesting to see how micro scenes evolve, how groups of friends from weird places step out switch it up change and move forward. With sister band Merchandise still in dialogue Ukiah Drag adds even more to the big picture of what Tampa has had to offer contemporary underground music and its still evolving. This release fits nicely into that artistic bloom. Songs created for the Tina Kolozsuaryc short film The Astronaut and the Star, Variations of Candy is a fully instrumental outing as deep and dense as it is minimal and sparse it is another sonic view of Ukiah Drags dark psychedelic very much contemporary take on blues rock. Plenty of noise and experimentalism present in the best and most tasteful way as well. This release rides like a mantra not sounded for heavenly epics but for those darker Kaidan like stories of mysteries and shadows.

NP197 Dice Parks "S/T" C20

Dice Parks is the solo project of Shawn Dicey member of Lab Coast from Calgary who had a prior release on Night-People. Dice creates an eclectic blend of guitar, synths, and drum machine based instrumental music that sits contemporary to the late 70s early 80s concerns of German Sky Records gurus like Rother, Plank, Moebius and Roedelius. What separates Dice from the mentioned classics is a distinct fusion of more rock oriented heroics centered mostly centered around hazy poppy guitar riffs with a driving post punk back drop present in many of the songs. A distinct varied release with plenty of subtle touches allowing the listener to dig in deep. Another impossible to pin down non genre specific ripper sent Night-Peoples way and a release that grows with every listen.
LISTEN

NP196 Idiot Glee "The Prairie" C45

James Friley from Lexington KY is Idiot Glee and is a long time NP friend as are many of the Lexington scene staples. This release is another nice representation of the eclectic nature of Lexington KYs underground music scene and Night-Peoples periodic schedule of releases representing it. On this release James switches things up a bit focusing on a mostly instrumental set of songs many ambient in nature. James use of piano is excellent on this release using highly melodic arrangements James creates atmosphere with space by allowing the notes to breathe out in a sustained ways. Eventually synths are used to accompany the piano and add a vibrant and even more uplifting choral heavenly feel. Popul Vuhs more ambient spacey pieces or soundtrack work might be a good reference point. The B side offers a bit more eclecticism more instrumentation is brought in for pieces that elaborate in shorter but more upbeat form on what takes place on the A side. The album ends with James bringing in his voice orientating it with solo piano in a way that contrasts the rest of the material but fits nicely in its minimalism and sustained depths. Another great addition to the excellent Idiot Glee discography. Mastered by Robert Beatty.

NP193 Fingers Pty Ltd "Broken Fingers" C42

Fingers Pty Ltd is a new Melbourne trio comprised of Bum Creek members Tarquin Manek and Sam Karmel with Mole House member Carla dal Forno taking up vocal duties. Fingers Pty is minimalist outsider pop with a post punk feel reminiscent of classics like Young Marble Giants or Fall of Saigon but with a much weirder more abstracted song writing style. Guitar appears on a few tracks but the bulk is propelled by strange funky baselines and synth leads with bits of electronics and noises creating an unpredictable push of interesting but often subtle sounds to shake up the minimalism of the songs and provide additional depth. Fingers Pty have created something unique and special here beyond any kind of predictable classification and are a nice addition to Melbournes eclectic and prolific underground music scene. Overall this is a hard release to describe and its best just to listen for yourself.

NP192 Sleepy Filter "The Name" C32

Seattle Visual Artists and longtime friends Will Kitchen and Jesse Miller are Sleepy Filter a duo with ties and friendships relating back to the rich and long running amalgamation of Seattle bands such as Factums, Yves Son Ace, Evening Meetings, Dream Salon etc. This album is true basement arcana tunes influenced by the rich history of Psychedelic rock and the weirder sides of punks outsiderisms. Millers extensive travels even come into play with the subtle use of field recordings captured on trips to South East Asia. Recorded on 8 Track CS Multi Track but with just the right amount of low fi vs. hi fi balance the tracks jump out sounding like a cross section between fuzzed out Chrome style 70s acid rockers and more chill hazy songs in the vein of say Jim Shepard or lost Xpressway cassettes, riding someplace in-between outsider song writer vibes and more pronounced experimentalism. Another nice addition from the largely low key Seattle weirdo scene that supports a long list of cool bands and projects.
LISTEN

NP191 Roladex "Cathode Rays" C20

Roladex is the newest addition to Night-Peoples expanding catalog of minimalist synth pop and fits in nicely with prior NP releases by Some Ember, Featureless Ghost, Goldendust etc. Roladex is a girl/guy duo from Amarillo TX who also have ties to Seattle and connections to the excellent Medical Records label. Roladex rides all analog deep in the vintage vein of synths and drum machines using pulsing sequences to create dynamic depths subtle and vibrant in the expansion and contraction of each sound. Harmonized male/female vocals and choruses sit in nicely with bass synth leads and the brooding style of Roladexs synth explorations often give way to upbeat vibrant melodic turns showcasing the full dynamics of their pop sensibilities and the full spectrum of their song writing. This is a well-crafted highly rendered release of excellent songs worthy of any curious listen but especially tuned for those interested in synth pops frontiers.

NP189 Tender Meat "Ripper's World" C42

The first local instalment of Night-Peoples relocation to the Twin Cities is by long running duo Tender Meat. Andy Fritz takes on Synth and Electronics duties with Jon Coe following suite on the Percussion end of things. Tender Meats hyper saturated schizophrenic blend of mutated acid house, noise, dub, ambient and all out electronic destruction gives Tender Meat an interesting edge and distinction while allowing them to still fit into what is current and fresh in underground electronic music. Very much a live band Rippers World captures Tender Meats syncopated duality and long form improvisational musical conversations in a precise and accurate way showing that this isnt just immediacy music alone but something fully constructed and flowing. Tender Meat deserves more attention both in and outside the Twin Cities and hopefully this release can help provide some new focus.

NP188 Cellophane Spill "Season 2" C26

This is the second NP cassette release by Austin analog Sci Fi synth loner Cellophane Spill and its even weirder then before something we find quite appealing. Its not often that you get to hear something that pushes the boundaries as much as this release does. With strong connections to the amazing vintage electronics store Switched On it can be expected that these alien soundtracks were created on equally puzzling and amazing gear. Heavy use of vocal effects and vocoder take the vocal performances represented to other parts of the galaxy and back if not to to entirely separate realities. The results are truly alien. With the addition of the Season and Episode references in the titles we can't help but to think further into some distorted demented television series. This release stands on its own genre free quite far outside what we know of anyone else to be making with vintage electronics at the moment something that makes this release quite a bold statement. Headphones recommended for a truly unique listening experience.
LISTEN

NP187 Some Ember "Asleep in the Ice Palace" C30

Some Ember are from the Bay/Oakland and with a prior cassette release on Crash Symbols and a first tour recently accomplished are just starting to create some buzz for their unique brand of highly developed elaborately composed new wave/synth pop/post punk hybrid of pop exuberance. The complexity of the song writing and composition is quite startling at first but once the variety and presentation sinks in and takes shape it is realized that this release is something you can sit with for a long time playing again and again and getting something new out of it every time. Like fellow Night-People band Featureless Ghost Some Ember are actively taking a vast template of ideas and influences from the past fusing it into the contemporary music moment and pushing forward without constraint or concern for safely fitting in to something more uniform. The results of this experiment or vision are highly considered and very well documented with excellent mixing of all elements firmly in place while breathing atmosphere into each other quite freely. If you liked the Featureless Ghost and Uncanny Valley release we did recently this will be right up your alley.
LISTEN

NP184 Dead Channel "Dead Space" C36

Dead Channel is a new Portland OR duo comprised of Jack Gilbert and Cody Brant. Jack former Iowa City resident of Welsh upbringing has done prior solo work under the Baronic Wall and Paul Balance projects. On this release Jack sticks to vocals while Cody supplies a thick syrup of analog synth, effects, drum machine etc. Retained and perhaps refined is Jack's distinct vocal delivery and descriptive dystopian lyrical style. The results as can be expected are quite unique, strange and potentially unsettling but quite enjoyable to those listeners interested in the darker subtle strains of outsider electronic and experimental music. Links could be drawn in sound comparison to early UK tape trade industrial and dark wave etc. This is menace that doesn't come out of the dark outright but hovers in a cold atmospheric miasma that is as clinical as it is grimy. Fitting music for rainy evenings near woods, vacant shopping malls or industrial wastelands.
LISTEN

NP181 Unhappybirthday "Kraken" C26

One of our favorite discoveries in new music over the past year Unhappybirthday are a from Wismar Germany and offer something very nice in their approach to minimalist synth pop/melodic post punk. They have that upbeat sad song thing going that always feels so good. We can't help but think if Jeurgen Gleue and the 39 Clocks had made soundtracks for those early John Hughes films this is what it might sound like. Similarities to fellow German fronted post punkers Horrid Red could be made as well but Unhappybirthday totally stand on their own as well. This one has already gotten a lot of repeat listening here at the Night-People HQ so we don't want to overstate what this music is or it isn't, we just think its good in a simple well recorded ultra catchy way with all the right flourishes of sonic details when needed. Lead man Daniel Ja has one of those somber slightly baritone voices seemingly beyond his years. With a prior cassette on Crash Symbols and some Euro touring under their belts this trio is just getting started and we are sure they are capable of upcoming great things.
LISTEN

NP179 D. Vassalotti "Live from Infinity" C36

Dave Vassalotti is the guitarist for the rising musical force that is Merchandise and it could be argued that his guitar playing is the secret weapon of that band, something that doesn't jump out right away to punch you in the face but truly gives the music the depth, dynamics and subtle beauty that renders it so listenable again again. Dave isn't new to releasing solo material a prior release of particular note being the very excellent Book of Ghosts LP. This cassette release is just as unique and imaginative as that very fine record and perhaps pushes the sound even further into a place free of any one aesthetic or genre idea yet retains something of distinction and specificity despite the variety. This is a unique personal vision a listening experience that it is subtle and organic, bold and startling, and very unique in that it approaches being experimental without thought towards that notion as something codified thus making the music so much more unique and personal then that word would imply. Another good lead into the Merchandise Totale Nite LP showing more of the atmosphere surrounding the band.
LISTEN

NP178 Dylan Ettinger "Crucify Your Love" C20

Its strange that it took this long for Night-People to get around to working with our old friend Dylan Ettinger. Fellow Midwest inhabitant who has even more love for College Basketball then we do. Working from a continued template from his last LP Lifetime of Romance but taking the sound to a more weirdo slightly more abstract funky electronics space. This release also feels a bit more cynical a bit darker a bit more lost and angry and we can dig that. Crucify Your Love as a statement expressed through the music presented seems to take the Lifetime of Romance idea one step further putting it up there to die or be resurrected on the cross as to which result is implied that is not fully revealed but these jams do ride in a way where it feels like there is nothing to come back to. There are many Ettinger fans out there and you won't be disappointed with this one, keep this guy motivated to keep pushing that invisible wall and pick up this tape.
LISTEN

NP177 Happy Jawbone Family Bands "The Silk Pistol" C52

Happy Jawbone are a loose collection of Brattleboro musicians who come out of the same Vermont weirdo scene as fellow Night-People bands Blanche Blanche Blanche and Son of Salami. Happy Jawbone also have close connections with the Feeding Tube record label with two prior LP's. Happy Jawbone ride a kaleidoscopic rainbow of influences stretching out from the loose jangly air of garage psych pop into country and freak folk with a bit of everything in between. Where as prior releases showed a bit more of a bent Beatles or Kinks vibe this one feels way more paisley underground (think early Rain Parade) meets Texas psych (think Easter Everywhere era Elevators) and maybe even a bit of 60s soundtrack style weirdness. Comparisons aside, this crew does their own thing in the saturated world of garage and psych pop revival. Something must be floating around the collective creative brain in Brattleboro to keep things unique and without pretension. Happy Jawbone seems so full of youthful sonic exuberance that there is plenty more room to grow even after three killer full lengths.

NP173 Blonde God "s/t" C26

This is a reissue of a self-released CDR, which Carson Cox of Merchandise had on tour with him last spring. After playing a gig together and jamming choice deep records until the early morning hours a bond was made concrete after a couple years of short duration crossings on different tours and mail correspondence. A good warm up for the upcoming Merchandise LP on Night-People, Blonde God is Carson all by himself, or so it seems. Its hard keeping up with this Tampa crew with such a tight knit relationship to collaboration and backing up each others solo outlets that goes beyond Merchandise itself into all the bands surrounding and coming before or surely after. For those of you who have been paying attention to Night-People long term you know full well this is the kind of thing the label is all about: The end of the road destinations and cities without much of an outside identity where creation happens for its own sake. Blonde God plays good and loud, it is reflective of the overall output but has its own aesthetics at play. Carson's voice hovers in and out of a wash of electronics and dreamy guitar work, in parts influenced by classic shoegaze and also harsher noise sensibilities, all in all if feels sad, heavy, distant and lost. There is a landscape to the sound. Is this what living in Tampa Bay can feel like?
LISTEN

NP172 Fancy Books "S/T" C20

Fancy Books are Tokyo duo Fumiko and Mitsuomi who even upon the release of this cassette are still a bit of a mystery to us. Seldom does Night-People release something via an email demo submission if it has ever happened we can't remember but something unique and special about this release got through to us instantly. Fancy Books are a strange mix of unique poppy electronic drone, weirdo dance, and a sort of dreamy synth driven psychedelic soft rock hybrid. Sharing some similarities with Blanche Blanche Blanche and other subtler softer sounding Night-People releases like the recent Superstar tape Fancy Books fit in nicely with the softer side of recent Night-People releases. Despite the chill nature of this release some moments and songs like track Sponge Boy stick like an anthem. Its easy to imagine driving around Tokyo at night soaking up all the atmosphere of neon and LCD screens letting the upbeat dreaminess of Fancy Books take you away into right where you are.

NP167 Uncanny Valley " Speaking In Prosthetic Tongues" C30

Oakland newcomers Uncanny Valley seem to be representative of a burgeoning scene (Body Glove, Some Ember etc.) of synth pop, dark trance and new wave bands cropping up out of the vacant post industrial landscape. This trio of Joey Casio, Kelsey McCurdy, and Natalee Decker create evocative dark psychedelic synth pop with Joey providing the backdrop of sequencing and drum machine, Kelsey on vocals, and Natalee on keys. Vocal centric cuts like "Rising" ring out in a full pop mode with anthemic hooks and driving, building momentum while more instrumental oriented tracks like "End Game" have more of a slow burn effect gently mutating into full on psychedelic synth repetition and minimalism. A great deep listen from a new band with tons of potential.

NP165 Gem Jones " Exhaust" C20

Gem Jones lives in Iowa and lays real low and outside the normal fray of the underground music scene. An outsider even in small town scene terms, Gems music has evolved a lot over a few years of weirdo pop cassette releases and even more rare live shows. Exhaust shows Gem in a new stretched out mode making serious nods to jazzy outsider rock, reggae, and DIY pop. Playing all the instruments and tracking the release to sound like a live full band make this tape sound like something truly out of its time. Not often in contemporary times is a songwriter able to create something so unique and also specific from so many influences so successfully. If you dig the sound of a wild cross section of Larry Young, Prince Buster, and Eddy Detroit you will enjoy this. Artwork by Ryan Garbes and Shawn Reed.

Wet Hair- Spill Into Atmosphere LP Destijl Records

Augmenting the core of singist-synther Reed and drummer Ryan Garbes is Justin Tye (replacing Matt Fenner, from previous album In Vogue Spirit era), no mere third wheel but Wet Hairs very own sort of Peter Hook (not counting all the Judas stuff), his unique melodic signature flying in formation with the bands but also peeling off into flights that relate to the silk wheels of the synths but compliment them, guide them, support and distort and report to them. No longer is the only way up the only way is every way. And from this altitude, Wet Hair can hear for miles. LISTEN
