Video created by me, Derya Tetwan Kurd, portrays Iranians from various ethnic group in and out of today Iran's boarders. The images include traditional dresses in Kurdistan, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Khorasan, Tajikistan and Baluchistan.
The people living in those lands are mainly Iranians following Iranian language, culture, and tradition.
The first song is in Kurdish, the second music is Azeri and the third song is Baluchi and they are all a part of Iranian languages alongside with Persian and many other langauges.

Nowhere in the world outside the Greater Iran have the Iranian People reached prominence as they have in India. The history of Iranic and Indic peoples is very much intertwined. As they both are the descendants of Indo-Iranian people who separated some 5000 years ago.
Subsequent Iranian Empires have successively controlled north-west and north India through the history. Starting with the Persian Achaemenid Empire, followed by Bactrian Empire, Parthian Empire, Kushan Empire, Indo-Saka Empire, Indo-Parthian Empire, Hephthalites Empire, Sassanid Empire....etc,etc. This has caused a continuous stream of Iranic people penetrating India and settling in different parts of this land. Many people in India can claim and do claim descendants from Iranian Tribes. For example Jat, Gujjar and Rajput are believed to have descended from the Xantii "Saka" tribes, Kouchari "Tokharians" and a mix of Pahlava and Indo-Saka. Or the Kambo being the Descendants of "Ashvaka" and "Kambojas" who were archaic Iranic Peoples Living in northern Afghanistan.
After the Islamic conquest of northern India many Iranic people converted to Islam and many new Iranian people settled in India following the Islamic armies such as Those of Qhaznavi, Ghuri and Mughal Empires!
It was mainly During the Mughal Empire that Persian Culture played a prominent role In northern India, However Persian influence was already very present during the Sultanate of Dehli.
One can Still recognize Persian influences in all aspects of daily Indian life, from language to cooking and from Music to Clothing.
One of the most prominent groups of Iranian People living in India is the Parsi and Irani,Zoroastrian, community. They have contributed a lot to economy, politics, industry and arts of India since their arrival in early 8th century A.D..
Also many Iranic people of Pashtun/Pathan and Tajik origin have settled in India from Pakistani and Afghanistani parts of Greater Iran. And are mainly prominent in Film Industry and Entertainment.

While a categorization of a "Persian" ethnic group persists in the West, Persians have generally been a pan-national group often comprising regional people who often refer to themselves as 'Persians' and have also often used the term "Iranian".
Old Persians were part of the wider Ariya (Iranian nation). Until the Parthian era, Iranian identity had an ethnic, linguistic, and religious value, however it did not yet have a political import. In the 1st century BCE, Strabo (c. 64 BCE--24 CE) would note a relationship between the various Iranian peoples and their languages: "[From] beyond the Indus [...] Ariana is extended so as to include some part of Persia, Media, and the north of Bactria and Sogdiana; for these nations speak nearly the same language." (Geography, 15.2.1--15.2.8. He mentions the Cyrtians, the plausible ancestors of the modern Kurds as one of the Persian tribes. Cyrtians, the generally accepted progenitors of the Kurds and Lurs. This makes Kurds Persians and not Medians.

Western Part of Xinjiang was within Sassanid Empires borders, around 450 A.D. and the inhabitants of these regions were referred to as "Cina-deva-gotra" (from Sanskrit). The name literally means "descendant of Han and the sun-god"
The Tokharians (Yuezhi) and The Saka (Scythians) were the first group of People who settled Tarim-Basin. They were both indo-european people.
We know of the language of the Saka via the kingdoms of Khotan and Tumxuk in what is now Xinjiang, China. The language and dialects are classified as a part of the Middle Iranian family of languages.Other languages in this group are Khwarezmian(Chorasmian), Sogdian and Bactrian. Originally, these languages would have all derived from the language of the Zoroastrian scriptures, the Avesta. According to Litvinsky and Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya, both the Saka dialects share features with modern Wakhi and Pashto. Many Prakrit terms were borrowed from Khotanese into the Tocharian languages. The Sakan language is also known as Khotanese. Khotanese itself is linguistically divided into old and new Khotanese. The Tochrians and the Khotanese Saka would eventually mix and become one group. This happend due to the successive invasions by Turko Monglo groups such as Xiongnu, Uyghur, Kyrgyz. These Tukic Nations absorbed and integrated much of the original Iranic people of Xinjiang.

SOGDIANA, now known as Tajikistan, is probably one of the most ancient regions inhabited by Iranian Peoples. It was part of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex in the Bronze Age, and is a candidate to be the cradle of Proto-Indo-Iranian and/or Proto-Iranian culture.
Sogdiana, an Iranian-speaking region in Central Asia, stretches from the rivers Āmu Daryā in the south to the Syr Daryā in the north, with its heart in the valleys of the Zarafšān and the Kaška Daryā. Pre-Achaemenid Sogdiana is recalled in the Younger Avesta (chap. 1 of the Vidēvdād, q.v.) under the name Gava and said to be inhabited by the Sogdians.
Cyrus the Great (see CYRUS iii) conquered Sogdiana in about 540 BCE. He advanced as far as the Syr Darya, where he established the town of Kyrèschata (Cyropolis), the farthest extent of the Persian empire to the northeast, identified with the site of Kurkath.
Around 160-130 BCE, the region was crisscrossed by various waves of migratory nomads from the north, whether they were Iranian-speaking Saka or the Indo-European Yuezhi (Tocharians) from within China. Beginning in the first century BCE, most of Sogdiana was included in a larger nomadic state, centered on the middle Syr Darya, namely Kangju. On the other hand, the Yuezhi principalities and then the Kushan empire incorporated the southeast part of Sogdiana (south of the Hissar mountains), which thereafter left the Sogdian sphere and was attached to Bactria.
The Tajiks are an Iranian people, speaking a variety of Persian, concentrated in the Oxus Basin, the Farḡāna valley (Tajikistan and parts of Uzbekistan) and on both banks of the upper Oxus, i.e., the Pamir mountains (Mountain Badaḵšān, in Tajikistan) and northeastern Afghanistan (Badaḵšān). Most Tajiks in the Pamirs (including about 34,000 in the Tašqorḡān district of the Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region in southwestern China) are native speakers of several Eastern Iranian languages of the Pamir group (those in Tajikistan use Persian as an administrative and contact language, while those in China (speakers mainly of Sarikoli and Wakhi) generally do not know Persian, and use Uighur and Chinese in dealings with their neighbors. Emigrés from Tajikistan are to be found in Russia, Israel, Western Europe, and North America. The total population of Tajiks is estimated at about five million.

The Iranian peoples or Iranic peoples are a diverse Indo-European ethno-linguistic group that comprise the speakers of Iranian languages.
Proto-Iranians are believed to have emerged as a separate branch of the Indo-Iranians in Central Asia in the mid 2nd millennium BC. At their peak of expansion in the mid 1st millennium BC, the territory of the Iranian peoples stretched across the Iranian Plateau and the entire Eurasian Steppe from the Great Hungarian Plain in the west to the Ordos Plateau in the east. The Western Iranian Persian Empires came to dominate much of the ancient world at this time, leaving an important cultural legacy, while the Eastern Iranian nomads of the steppe played a decisive role in the development of Eurasian nomadism and the Silk Route. Ancient Iranian peoples include the Alans, Bactrians, Dahae, Massagetae, Medes, Khwarezmians, Parthians, Saka, Sarmatians, Scythians, Sogdians and other peoples of Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, and the Iranian Plateau.

While a categorization of a "Persian" ethnic group persists in the West, Persians have generally been a pan-national group often comprising regional people who often refer to themselves as 'Persians' and have also often used the term "Iranian". Old Persians were part of the wider Ariya (Iranian nation). Until the Parthian era, Iranian identity had an ethnic, linguistic, and religious value, however it did not yet have a political import. In the 1st century BCE, Strabo (c. 64 BCE--24 CE) would note a relationship between the various Iranian peoples and their languages: "[From] beyond the Indus [...] Ariana is extended so as to include some part of Persia, Media, and the north of Bactria and Sogdiana; for these nations speak nearly the same language." (Geography, 15.2.1--15.2.8. He mentions the Cyrtians, the plausible ancestors of the modern Kurds as one of the Persian tribes. Cyrtians, the generally accepted progenitors of the Kurds and Lurs. This makes Kurds Persians and not Medians. -

Western Part of Xinjiang was within Sassanid Empires borders, around 450 A.D. and the inhabitants of these regions were referred to as "Cina-deva-gotra" (from Sanskrit). The name literally means "descendant of Han and the sun-god" The Tokharians (Yuezhi) and The Saka (Scythians) were the first group of People who settled Tarim-Basin. They were both indo-european people. We know of the language of the Saka via the kingdoms of Khotan and Tumxuk in what is now Xinjiang, China. The language and dialects are classified as a part of the Middle Iranian family of languages.Other languages in this group are Khwarezmian(Chorasmian), Sogdian and Bactrian. Originally, these languages would have all derived from the language of the Zoroastrian scriptures, the Avesta. According to Litvinsky and Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya, both the Saka dialects share features with modern Wakhi and Pashto. Many Prakrit terms were borrowed from Khotanese into the Tocharian languages. The Sakan language is also known as Khotanese. Khotanese itself is linguistically divided into old and new Khotanese. The Tochrians and the Khotanese Saka would eventually mix and become one group. This happend due to the successive invasions by Turko Monglo groups such as Xiongnu, Uyghur, Kyrgyz. SOGDIANA, now known as Tajikistan, is probably one of the most ancient regions inhabited by Iranian Peoples. It was part of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex in the Bronze Age, and is a candidate to be the cradle of Proto-Indo-Iranian and/or Proto-Iranian culture. Sogdiana, an Iranian-speaking region in Central Asia, stretches from the rivers Āmu Daryā in the south to the Syr Daryā in the north, with its heart in the valleys of the Zarafšān and the Kaška Daryā. Pre-Achaemenid Sogdiana is recalled in the Younger Avesta (chap. 1 of the Vidēvdād, q.v.) under the name Gava and said to be inhabited by the Sogdians. Cyrus the Great (see CYRUS iii) conquered Sogdiana in about 540 BCE. He advanced as far as the Syr Darya, where he established the town of Kyrèschata (Cyropolis), the farthest extent of the Persian empire to the northeast, identified with the site of Kurkath. Around 160-130 BCE, the region was crisscrossed by various waves of migratory nomads from the north, whether they were Iranian-speaking Saka or the Indo-European Yuezhi (Tocharians) from within China. Beginning in the first century BCE, most of Sogdiana was included in a larger nomadic state, centered on the middle Syr Darya, namely Kangju. On the other hand, the Yuezhi principalities and then the Kushan empire incorporated the southeast part of Sogdiana (south of the Hissar mountains), which thereafter left the Sogdian sphere and was attached to Bactria. The Tajiks are an Iranian people, speaking a variety of Persian, concentrated in the Oxus Basin, the Farḡāna valley (Tajikistan and parts of Uzbekistan) and on both banks of the upper Oxus, i.e., the Pamir mountains (Mountain Badaḵšān, in Tajikistan) and northeastern Afghanistan (Badaḵšān). Most Tajiks in the Pamirs (including about 34,000 in the Tašqorḡān district of the Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region in southwestern China) are native speakers of several Eastern Iranian languages of the Pamir group (those in Tajikistan use Persian as an administrative and contact language, while those in China (speakers mainly of Sarikoli and Wakhi) generally do not know Persian, and use Uighur and Chinese in dealings with their neighbors. Emigrés from Tajikistan are to be found in Russia, Israel, Western Europe, and North America. The total population of Tajiks is estimated at about five million. Nowhere in the world outside the Greater Iran have the Iranian People reached prominence as they have in India. The history of Iranic and Indic peoples is very much intertwined. As they both are the descendants of Indo-Iranian people who separated some 5000 years ago. Subsequent Iranian Empires have successively controlled north-west and north India through the history. Nowhere in the world outside the Greater Iran have the Iranian People reached prominence as they have in India. The history of Iranic and Indic peoples is very much intertwined. As they both are the descendants of Indo-Iranian people who separated some 5000 years ago.
Subsequent Iranian Empires have successively controlled north-west and north India through the history. Starting with the Persian Achaemenid Empire, followed by Bactrian Empire, Parthian Empire, Kushan Empire, Indo-Saka Empire, Indo-Parthian Empire, Hephthalites Empire, Sassanid Empire....etc,etc. This has caused a continuous stream of Iranic people penetrating India and settling in different parts of this land. Many people in India can claim and do claim descendants from Iranian Tribes. For example Jat, Gujjar and Rajput are believed to have descended from the Xantii "Saka" tribes, Kouchari "Tokharians" and a mix of Pahlava and Indo-Saka. Or the Kambo being the Descendants of "Ashvaka" and "Kambojas" who were archaic Iranic Peoples Living in northern Afghanistan.
After the Islamic conquest of northern India many Iranic people converted to Islam and many new Iranian people settled in India following the Islamic armies such as Those of Qhaznavi, Ghuri and Mughal Empires!
It was mainly During the Mughal Empire that Persian Culture played a prominent role In northern India, However Persian influence was already very present during the Sultanate of Dehli.
One can Still recognize Persian influences in all aspects of daily Indian life, from language to cooking and from Music to Clothing.

While a categorization of a "Persian" ethnic group persists in the West, Persians have generally been a pan-national group often comprising regional people who often refer to themselves as 'Persians' and have also often used the term "Iranian".
Old Persians were part of the wider Ariya (Iranian nation). Until the Parthian era, Iranian identity had an ethnic, linguistic, and religious value, however it did not yet have a political import. In the 1st century BCE, Strabo (c. 64 BCE--24 CE) would note a relationship between the various Iranian peoples and their languages: "[From] beyond the Indus [...] Ariana is extended so as to include some part of Persia, Media, and the north of Bactria and Sogdiana; for these nations speak nearly the same language." (Geography, 15.2.1--15.2.8. He mentions the Cyrtians, the plausible ancestors of the modern Kurds as one of the Persian tribes. Cyrtians, the generally accepted progenitors of the Kurds and Lurs. This makes Kurds Persians and not Medians.

Western Part of Xinjiang was within Sassanid Empires borders, around 450 A.D. and the inhabitants of these regions were referred to as "Cina-deva-gotra" (from Sanskrit). The name literally means "descendant of Han and the sun-god"
The Tokharians (Yuezhi) and The Saka (Scythians) were the first group of People who settled Tarim-Basin. They were both indo-european people.
We know of the language of the Saka via the kingdoms of Khotan and Tumxuk in what is now Xinjiang, China. The language and dialects are classified as a part of the Middle Iranian family of languages.Other languages in this group are Khwarezmian(Chorasmian), Sogdian and Bactrian. Originally, these languages would have all derived from the language of the Zoroastrian scriptures, the Avesta. According to Litvinsky and Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya, both the Saka dialects share features with modern Wakhi and Pashto. Many Prakrit terms were borrowed from Khotanese into the Tocharian languages. The Sakan language is also known as Khotanese. Khotanese itself is linguistically divided into old and new Khotanese. The Tochrians and the Khotanese Saka would eventually mix and become one group. This happend due to the successive invasions by Turko Monglo groups such as Xiongnu, Uyghur, Kyrgyz. These Tukic Nations absorbed and integrated much of the original Iranic people of Xinjiang.

SOGDIANA, now known as Tajikistan, is probably one of the most ancient regions inhabited by Iranian Peoples. It was part of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex in the Bronze Age, and is a candidate to be the cradle of Proto-Indo-Iranian and/or Proto-Iranian culture.
Sogdiana, an Iranian-speaking region in Central Asia, stretches from the rivers Āmu Daryā in the south to the Syr Daryā in the north, with its heart in the valleys of the Zarafšān and the Kaška Daryā. Pre-Achaemenid Sogdiana is recalled in the Younger Avesta (chap. 1 of the Vidēvdād, q.v.) under the name Gava and said to be inhabited by the Sogdians.
Cyrus the Great (see CYRUS iii) conquered Sogdiana in about 540 BCE. He advanced as far as the Syr Darya, where he established the town of Kyrèschata (Cyropolis), the farthest extent of the Persian empire to the northeast, identified with the site of Kurkath.
Around 160-130 BCE, the region was crisscrossed by various waves of migratory nomads from the north, whether they were Iranian-speaking Saka or the Indo-European Yuezhi (Tocharians) from within China. Beginning in the first century BCE, most of Sogdiana was included in a larger nomadic state, centered on the middle Syr Darya, namely Kangju. On the other hand, the Yuezhi principalities and then the Kushan empire incorporated the southeast part of Sogdiana (south of the Hissar mountains), which thereafter left the Sogdian sphere and was attached to Bactria.
The Tajiks are an Iranian people, speaking a variety of Persian, concentrated in the Oxus Basin, the Farḡāna valley (Tajikistan and parts of Uzbekistan) and on both banks of the upper Oxus, i.e., the Pamir mountains (Mountain Badaḵšān, in Tajikistan) and northeastern Afghanistan (Badaḵšān). Most Tajiks in the Pamirs (including about 34,000 in the Tašqorḡān district of the Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region in southwestern China) are native speakers of several Eastern Iranian languages of the Pamir group (those in Tajikistan use Persian as an administrative and contact language, while those in China (speakers mainly of Sarikoli and Wakhi) generally do not know Persian, and use Uighur and Chinese in dealings with their neighbors. Emigrés from Tajikistan are to be found in Russia, Israel, Western Europe, and North America. The total population of Tajiks is estimated at about five million.

Journey through Iran
In late 2013 I had the chance to travel through Iran for around 5 weeks, a great possibility to see more of a country that captivated my attention in previous years. Mostly making headlines for all the wrong reasons, there had to be more to a country with such a long and diverse history. This travel video is a modest attempt to show some of the diversity that exists in Iran. It was edited in early 2014 and should be seen in a different (political) context than today's. The economic sanctions, that have recently been eased, were still very much in place. Many people were struggling to make a living, yet there always seemed a way to make things happen. This travel video is a modest attempt to show some of the diversity that exists in Iran. It was edited in early 2014 and should be seen in a different (political) context than today's. The economic sanctions, that have recently been eased, were still very much in place. Many people were struggling to make a living, yet there always seemed a way to make things happen.
The openess and welcoming attitude of the Iranian people were probably the things that most impressed me. Walking the ancient bazaars was a great way to meet people and talk about daily life. Almost everywhere I went, I was received with a smile and in many cases a fresh cup of tea.
The video starts with a brief introduction of Iran's modern history. It then shows some different aspects of society, from the rural areas to the cities, from the country's broader economic picture to the role of religion.
It is by no means an attempt to give a full overview of Iran. You would have to read dozens of books, watch countless documentaries, and do more research. The best advice I can give if you want to learn more about this fascinating country, however, is to visit for yourself. No doubt, you will be surprised.
