Requests and proposals Steward requests (Miscellaneous) Archives
This page is for requesting that a specific administrative action (such as page deletion) be performed by a steward or global sysop on a Wikimedia wiki having no active administrators. (If the wiki does have active administrators, file the request with one of them.) If the wiki has an active editor community, any potentially controversial action (deletion of actual content, edit to a protected page, renaming of a protected page, etc.) should receive consensus from the wiki community before being requested here, and a link should be provided to that consensus in the request.

To add a new request, create a new section header at the bottom of the page (just above the categories) of the form:

=== Very brief description of request here ===

{{Status|In progress}}
Your request --~~~~

Then describe your request more fully below that. It is helpful if you can provide a link to the wiki (or the specific page on the wiki) in question, either in the header or in the body of your request.

To report vandalism issues, please use Vandalism reports instead.

Bot-reported speedy deletion requests[edit]

This section is for reports filed via Kimberley-nia Bot on the SWMT's IRC channel #cvn-sw (bot's irc nick is Dellieplagiat). They are submitted on this subpage. Please watch this page separately if you are a steward, a global sysop, or a local administrator.

It is possible to manually edit this list if you follow the bot's formatting. If you feel a request is inappropriate, please remove the lines containing that request entirely. (Leaving comments, modifying the header line, and striking out reports will confuse the bot.)

Example for the correct formatting:

* {{msd-link|ie.wikipedia|Talk:Europa}}
*: spam - IRC user DerHexer ~~~~~

Properly-filed requests that point to pages that have already been deleted or do not exist will be automatically removed by the bot. Note: It is unnecessary to remove requests for wikis where local admins "can handle it by themselves". If that is really so, the pages will surely be deleted within a small period of time and then be automatically removed from the list by the bot.

Manual requests[edit]

Please see a list of pages nominated for speedy deletion via {{Delete}} and/or the local equivalent. You can also filter by wikis whose admins are less than X or have not delete since Y.

Double redirects that bots cannot fix[edit]

Status:    In progress

We have a large number of wikis with Double Redirect issues. I operate a bot that fixes this on practically every wiki. Over the years these smaller wikis have accumulated double redirects bots cannot fix. This may be because the page is protected or because the double redirect is formed due to a circular or self redirects.

The protected pages can be due to admin protections or user .js or .css files that are leftover as redirects if the user account is moved more than once. I fixed plenty of these on Commons wiki using my admin privileges. An admin helped me with the task on en.wikipedia. If the bot (User:タチコマ robot) is given global sysop (even briefly) it can fix the protected double redirect pages on the smaller wikis.

After that there still will be a need to process whats left manually. I tend to recommend speedy deletion of circular redirects since they lead to nowhere to begin with.

-- とある白い猫 chi? 23:02, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

If you desire rights to do this yourself, this request would be better placed on SRGP. --MF-W 19:33, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
As you wish. I will post something there for the bot, however this is an issue that needs resolution independent of that decision. Aside from the bot-related task it is too difficult of a task for a single individual probably. Not so much of an issue if crowd sourced. -- とある白い猫 chi? 09:04, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg: There you go: Steward requests/Global permissions#Global sysop for タチコマ robot. To be honest I do not expect much, people often are paranoid about bots with admin flag. -- とある白い猫 chi? 09:42, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg: As expected not much will seemingly come from it. Instead of tearing down the thing I am going to let it run its full course, maybe it can initiate some sort of discussion on the matter. To be honest, I too do not see the point of granting the bot full global sysop access when it only needs to edit protected pages. Alternatively a special flag could be granted to bots that allow them to edit protected pages but not offer any additional access. I do not believe such a privilege exist at the moment.
If bot isn't going to work on this task, then it would be necessary for global admins and/or stewards to take care of it. I recognize it could be a lot of man hours.
-- とある白い猫 chi? 19:26, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
To be honest I would not have had a problem with granting the bot GS for a short time. I am a bit disappointed that the request was immediately bombarded with pile-on opposes. But of course if a "lower" right like interface-editor works as well, that is good. I commented on the new request. --MF-W 21:28, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg: This access will thin the problem (fixing protected pages) but not completely resolve it. We will have broken redirects (the bot can tag these for speedy deletion or delete them if it has admin rights), circular redirects (including self redirects) bot will skip them, and finally interwiki redirects. The last item isn't a problem as far as logs are concerned for the time being unless a redirect points to an interwiki redirect - which forms a double redirect as far as he logs are concerned. -- とある白い猫 chi? 08:37, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Comment Comment As I mentioned at the other location, the actual right needed for this task would be 'global interface editor', not global sysop. Revent (talk) 19:51, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

I have filed an Interface editors permission request for the bot per IRC discussion with above user. -- とある白い猫 chi? 20:04, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Ruslik, it looks like almost all of the files are eligible for copyright, except for one or two text logos. MBisanz talk 13:33, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
In aswiki, there is no clear EDP so my opinion is that under the wmf:Resolution:Licensing policy, we can act on that project if local users with appropriate rights are unavailable to do so where necessary. In case of mswiki, they have clear EDP so it's up to them whether they host unused non-free files or not. Though most of the project where EDP exist, they're routinely cleaning non-free unused files. ~ Nahid Talk 14:30, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Request to approve OAuth consumer for Citation Hunt v1.0[edit]

Status:    In progress

Hi! Could you please approve this proposal for a OAuth consumer for Citation Hunt? Thanks! --Surlycyborg (talk) 21:16, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

I see that your tool collects data from users. How is that compliant with the Labs Terms of Use?MarcoAurelio 21:43, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Oh, you're totally right, thanks for the link! I don't currently collect data, but I planned on storing the user name from OAuth. Let's put this on hold then, I'll look for alternatives. Surlycyborg (talk)
The linked TOU says "Clearly communicate to End Users a) that Private Information is being collected, b) how you will use it, and c) when you will delete it;". That is not a blanket restriction on collecting information. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 22:34, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Surlycyborg, you say that you don't collect data, however I see a stats module which collects and stores information which is very obviously PPI and should not be stored without a very, very good reason. If this code is no longer needed, remove it ;-). If you must keep that code in the repository, you need to add a very clear "no-user-stats" mode which is enabled by default in production. John Vandenberg (talk) 00:17, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
@Surlycyborg: hi. Any progress? Matiia (talk) 04:07, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Hi Matiia. If you're wondering about collecting user agents, no, that no longer happens (this is the relevant commit, if you're curious). Regarding the initial request, I'm not currently working on OAuth integration for Citation Hunt, but that's still in the long-term wishlist (that's issue #49, by the way). I just ended up sidetracked into other work, and haven't had the time to come back and figure out how to implement this in conformance to the user data policy on Tools Labs. --Surlycyborg (talk)

Approve "fawiki-editathon" OAuth consumer token[edit]

ro.voy edit box[edit]

Status:    In progress

A few years ago I added some buttons to the edit box on ro.wikivoyage. Apparently, the code I wrote back then no longer works, so I've put up a replacement script. I would appreciate if someone would replace ro:voy:MediaWiki:Editor.js with voy:ro:User:Strainu/Editor.js. Alternatively (but less secure), you could just import my script in the main one. Thanks!--Strainu (talk) 14:21, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

@Strainu: Hi, have you already tested if this code works correctly? Syum90 (talk) 17:26, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I tested with the dev tools. But I've looked closer now and it seems I was just importing the script in my common.js. I'll start a discussion on the local village pump about enabling it for everyone.--Strainu (talk) 19:52, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Making threatening[edit]

Status:    In progress

Hi, on 30 august 2016 above two IP addresses have done vandalism deeds on the pages in Sinhala wikipedia including putting serious threatening notes on my user pages.

  • 103.21.164.19 - Creating nonsense pages and edit other articles related to former and current Sri Lankan presidents [1], [2], [3], [4]

Blanking my User space main page by replacing filthy statements.[5], Put serious threatening statements on my talk page[6] and another related page[7]

  • 175.157.66.133 - (29 August) Making a fake user page by putting few targeted users' main page materials with their original signatures. (Users=Me, Shwetha and Ravindu_Navin)The name which has been put as the user name of this account is common and unsuitable rough word using in Sinhala language.[8]

I submitted this incident to Vandalism reports but no responses have been made yet. I already have complained about this vandalism deeds to our two local administrators but admin Lee is on a wiki-break as indicated in his talk page and other admin Singhalawap is usually inactive in these days. I ask you to do suitable measurements to this incident for prevent further problems. Thanks--L Manju (talk) 01:09, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

user Ravindu_Navin had used the IP address 175.157.119.85 indicate that he is retiring. The same IP address had been used by him for the following Sinhala Film related articles which shows his foot-print/identity: [9], [10], and [11]. Thus it is clear that user of IP address 175.157.119.85 is user Ravindu_Navin . This IP address had originated from a Dialog Axiata tower in Badulla district in Sri Lanka. The IP address 175.157.66.133 which had been used to vandalise and create the fake user page had alo originated from the same tower. The IP info of the following proves that:
I strong request the stewards to investigate whether these two IP adresses and user Ravindu_Navin belong to the same user. ----- Shwetha (talk) 09:20, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
the user "Ravindu_Navin" is a newcomer. He is a valuable resource to Sinhala Wikipedia. Even though we have a set of rules, it should not be used in such a way to thwart the efforts of newcomers .the matter shouldn’t look emotionally. --Rsekanayake (talk) 07:36, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
The user Ravindu Navin seems to be a new_user. However rules should not be bent. There should be a discipline at any entity at all levels. Success can be achieved only through such. Loosing the user will not destroy Sinhala Wikipedia. ----Shwetha (talk) 14:56, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

@Stewards:Can we bring this incident to Steward requests/Checkuser page for further action or are we late for it now?--L Manju (talk) 09:27, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

All local mediawiki messages on got.wikipedia.org should be deleted[edit]

Status:    In progress

We have a problem because translations done in translatewik aren't correctly viewed. The problem is countless incorrect local mediawiki messages, which can be viewed in green:

https://got.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AllMessages&prefix=&filter=modified&lang=got&limit=500

Is it possible to remove all messages in green and keep the ones in yellow? Bokareis (talk) 19:05, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

I now at least deleted the ones that had content identical to the default (translatewiki) message. The remaining ones are those with a different version. Some of the local ones however have a translation where the default is still English, but I of course have no idea whether they are correct. SPQRobin (talk) 14:41, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
The problem is that our local messages overwrite the Translatewiki ones. The remaining ones with a different version should be deleted too, that means wht's in yellow should be removed and what's in green kept. Bokareis (talk) 13:16, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I understand. However, what makes the local ones incorrect? I have no idea of knowing other than based on your request, so that's why I did only the identical ones; I'd like to be somewhat certain before going ahead and deleting all of them. SPQRobin (talk) 16:00, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Import from testwiki to map-bms wiki[edit]

yes it only new revisions. Testing some gadget for map-bmswiki. ThanksMurbaut (talk) 23:21, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Why is this necessary? And why do the last two pages not exist? --MF-W 00:14, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
This request was posted originally on SRP (with a change of header). I think is not necessary, but the administrator rights has import transwiki? access. You are admin on map-bmswiki and you can import these pages. --Ks-M9 [disc.] 00:51, 18 November 2016 (UTC).
No, transwiki is not enabled on map-bmswiki. --Vogone (talk) 01:24, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg: Yes I'm the gadget development, I want to test at there. Murbaut (talk) 12:03, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the link to the last 2 pages. However, you shouldn't test in production. --MF-W 06:05, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg: Why?. I want to know, What is problem be show.

I think this is no problem to import. Murbaut (talk) 07:04, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

technical details
Now I am confused. I've reviewed again and I read the following (in english, because I don't speak in map-bms):
  • Transwiki importers: "Import pages from other wikis (import)"
  • Administrators: "Import pages from other wikis (import)"

Import or Transwiki is not enabled? Because, import access also can import pages from a file upload, administrators and Transwiki importers (map-bmswiki) no, only import pages from other wikis. --Ks-M9 [disc.] 18:16, 18 November 2016 (UTC).

File upload only works with the "importupload" permission. "import" grants access to the transwiki feature. Transwiki however needs specified "import sources", and for map-bms none were defined. This means it is possible for local admins/transwiki importers to visit map-bms:Special:Import, but there will be merely a notice that no import sources were defined. Import sources can be added via phabricator:, though only with community consensus. Regards, --Vogone (talk) 18:44, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Non-free content[edit]

Does anyone have an interest in Non-free content at wikis that have no exemption doctrine policy or that do not seem to be enforcing it properly? As an example of the latter, w:id:Wikipedia:Penggunaan media nonbebas#Kebijakan gambar tokoh yang masih hidup appears to prohibit non-free images for BLPs, but w:id:Istimewa:Daftar_berkas seems to have more photos of BLPs than one might expect under such a policy. (Please ping me.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:50, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Sure, you can/should tag such violations with {{delete}} and if the requests are not acted upon in a month or so you can ping global sysops/stewards here, as with #Speedy deletions on as/ms. Nemo 12:09, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

@WhatamIdoing: You mentioned id.wikipedia, which is a larger project and stewards can probably not edit there. There are 295 Wikipedias and of these there are ~85 Wikipedias [12] having more than 1000 local files. In 2012 Nemo claimed 76 [13]. These Wikipedias often 1) have upload open for any logged-in user 2) host dozens of unused files 3) have lots of unfree files among the unused files, i.e. they are not EDP-files, since they lack an applicable rationale. Some Wikipedias have more than 1000 unused files, some more than 5000 - the counter stops then. Some have 20% of all files unused.

Local files in Wikipedias
Date 1 Qty of projects 2 Qty of projects w/o local files
(100% Commons)
3 Qty of projects having local files 4 Qty of local files 4/3 Reference
2013-01-01 285 36 249 2 038 148 8185 [14]
2014-01-01 287 30 257 2 208 750 8594 [15]
2015-01-01 288 30 258 2 311 679 8959 [16]
2016-01-01 291 37 254 2 405 486 9470 [17]
2016-12-08 295 139 160 2 430 073 15187 [18]

In the last ~4 years (2013-01-01 to today) the number of local files in Wikipedias increased by 391 925 from 2 038 148 to 2 430 073 [19], i.e. ca. 100 000 per year. At the same time, the number of Wikipedias using local files decreased. The major part of the increase comes from the aforementioned 85 Wikipedias. Some are out of scope for stewards and SRM.

To stop the problem with non-free content in small, open-upload Wikipedias and the workload for stewards to become worse, one could restrict the upload to admins. That is not fixing current violations, but reducing chance for new violations and freeing steward resources.

Candidates for restriction are the following 40 Wikipedias, each has 9 or less admins and uploads still open: ksh, pfl, rm, wuu, nv, frr, als, vec, bar, zh-yue, an, mt, pa, km, ga, oc, bcl, as, ps, scn, eml, mn, ba, be-tarask, am, be, sw, wa, lb, ky, hi, kn, tt, my, si, jv, br, fy, ka, bs. 92.227.229.171 01:37, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Main page edit on kowikt[edit]

Status:    Done

Please replace some phrases on main page of kowikt. Page 1 and Page 2, these pages are now using template:분류. But, actually, that template is unnecessary, because we can replace their function with our own mediawiki grammar. So, these pages should be edited like this:

{{분류|언어}} -> [[:분류:언어|언어]]
{{분류|한국어}} -> [[:분류:한국어|한국어]]

Then after replacing, please delete the template. --Nuevo Paso (talk) 07:54, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

@Nuevo Paso: I've lowered the protection level to semi-protection so you can now do the changes yourself. Please notify us when you have finish in order to restore the protection level in the page again.--Syum90 (talk) 08:45, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I have edited the main page. Now, It's time to adjunctive page. Nuevo Paso (talk) 05:39, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Since the wiki currently lacks administrators, I do not think it's a good idea to restore full protection, unless we are facing spam/vandalism edits to that page. --Vogone (talk) 05:43, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I'm agree, probably it's better to leave the page semi-protected to let local users to make changes and updates to the page, especially taking into account the fact that almost all the vandalism on this wiki is made by non-registered users. In fact I was thinking on proposing Nuevo Paso to start a discussion on the community regarding to this, so for now we'll leave the page semi-protected unless the local community decide to fully-protect the page again. @Nuevo Paso: This template is also semi-protected now.--Syum90 (talk) 08:36, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I will start to discuss about this issue on local wiki. Anyway, all pages have edited, it's done. Nuevo Paso (talk) 13:38, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Closing as done, leaving the protection levels as is. Savhñ 14:01, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
