Actor Ryan Phillippe has opened up about the way he and his ex-wife, Reese Witherspoon, co-parent over the holiday season.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Phillippe, 42, explained that when it comes to their children, the former couple "trade off".

Of their thanksgiving plans, Phillippe shared, "Last year my kids and I went to my parents' in Delaware, this year they will be with their mom and I am shooting a movie up in Toronto,"

Phillippe and Witherspoon, who were married from 1999 to 2007, have two children together: 17-year-old Ava and 13-year-old Deacon. The pair appeared in the 1999 hit Cruel Intentions alongside Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Phillippe described the co-parenting approach he and Witherspoon, 40, have adopted as "healthy"

"You have to get to that point as a divorced parent, as any parent, where you're not putting yourself first," he told ET. "You want the kids' experience to be its own and not like, 'Well, I need to have my time!' We have been very good about that."

In 2014, Phillippe told Huff Post Live of his pride at the way he and Witherspoon were raising their children post-divorce - describing it as a "feeling-out" process.

"I think we've gotten to a really great place…" he said. "It's going well, and she's happy and remarried, and our kids are incredible. I'm proud of the way we've handled it and who our little people are."

Earlier this year, Reese, who has a four-year-old son with new husband Jim Toth, posted a photo of herself and her daughter, which had the internet seeing double.

While many argued that Ava was a "clone" of her mother, others pointed out that she looks just like her dad.
