Robbie Ross Jr., Heath Hembree, Matt Barnes and Koji Uehara allowed just three hits and one run in four innings ... Uehara didn’t warm up for the eighth inning of a 6-5 win over the Rays, with Barnes taking it instead ... What was wrong with Uehara? He hadn’t pitched since Monday and that game didn’t go so well ... Well, if something’s wrong with Uehara, now the Sox might really need to get a reliever....

There was speculation something was wrong with Kimbrel when Farrell went to Koji Uehara for the save following a team off-day on Thursday ... "He was unavailable," Farrell said ... Without two of their key relievers, the Red Sox still held on for a tight win, as Robbie Ross Jr., Heath Hembree, Matt Barnes (three strikeouts in the eighth) and Uehara recorded the final 12 outs ... Maybe it’s the backup goalie effect. Sean O’Sullivan isn’t exactly blowing hitters away ... Manager John Farrell turned to Matt Barnes (3.00 ERA) instead of Junichi Tazawa, who hadn’t pitched since Sunday, or Koji Uehara, who hadn’t pitched since Monday ... With a two-run lead in the ninth, Kimbrel, who pitched on Tuesday and Wednesday, stayed in the bullpen while Uehara came out to slam door in the ninth. ....

BOSTON (AP) — Tampa Bay's Chris Archer has experienced lots of trouble beating the Red Sox during his career. His latest outing didn't go a long way toward ending that drought. David Ortiz hit his 21st home run of the season, Bryce Brentz had two hits and broke a tie with an RBI single in the sixth and the Red Sox beat the Rays 6-5 on Friday night ... "It's tough ... Maybe it’s the backup goalie effect. Sean O’Sullivan isn’t exactly blowing away hitters ... When O’Sullivan starts, the Red Sox are 4-0 this season ... It was his 21st home run ... With Junichi Tazawa (shoulder tightness) and Craig Kimbrel (left knee soreness) unavailable, Matt Barnes handled a scoreless eighth and Koji Uehara allowed a solo homer in the ninth before securing an important win two games before the break....
