Hello! There now follow some handy hints on how to make the most of your Reading My Blog experience:
  • If you don't like my colour scheme (I am aware that many people don't) add "?style=light" to the end of any url to get a different version.
  • If you want to know more about me, click here
  • If you haven't got a dreamwidth account you can still log in and comment or participate in polls with openID.
  • Other platforms I am active on are listed here.

Comments Policy:
  • Anonymous commenting is enabled, although anon comments are screened before publication; please, if you comment anonymously, give yourself a name/pseudonym/some form of identifier. If you don't your comment will not be unscreened.
  • I don't censor comments from people I know unless pushed VERY hard. Red lines include racism, misogyny, homophobia, unjoking advocation of violence, and being horrible about (or to) people I love. Anons tend to get a lot less leeway and a lot less benefit of the doubt; sorry. My blog, my rules.
  • If you want to point out cock-ups I have made, please direct them to Pedants' Corner; likewise if you want to ask me something off the topic of the post please go to this entry - this saves readers' scrolling fingers.

Norovirus

Crikey, norovirus is HORRIBLE, isn't it?

Saturday morning I was right as rain.
Saturday lunchtime I felt a bit queasy. Two minutes later I had to fight my way to the loo and cut for TMI ).

The rest of Saturday and up to Sunday afternoon I couldn't even keep water down.
Sunday afternoon I managed a yogurt.
Sunday evening I managed a plain chicken breast, then got overconfident and tried to eat a funsize bag of skittles. Skittles caused puke-o-rama.
About 2am I managed a bagel. It stayed down but I felt awful.
About an hour ago a cheese spread sandwich. I still feel queasy.

On top of all that I am highly infectious so I can't have hugs, and won't be able to have hugs for two days after symptoms subside.

Guys, you all know how I love food and hugs.
This is the worst torture EVER.

I was reading this earlier, and it struck me as very persuasive. Go read it. I'll wait.

I think we are at 1913, and all the pieces are in place, and all we need is for someone to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand. Or we are at 1938, and all we need is for someone to invade Poland...

We have an actual fascist as president elect of the USA.
A majority of Europeans now have authoritarian views.
The disabled have been derided as scroungers to the point where the UN human rights commission decries our treatment of them, and most Brits just shrug.
Muslims, anyone with a brown or black face, and LGBT people have been prepped by demonisation.

All we need is an Archduke Ferdinand moment, and we'll all start blowing each other up with heterosexual abandon.

Me, personally, I can see it going down one of two ways:

1, Some nutter assassinates Trump. Could be anyone, doesn't really matter. Whoever it is, the whole festering can of worms will explode. Ugly white supremacism will blame muslims and the retaliation will be swift, merciless, and violent. America has guns. Lots and lots of guns. And they don't mind pointing them at each other or anyone else. At some point it will go outside American borders and we'll all end up caught up in it.

2, Russia continues expansionism into Baltic states to the point where we can't keep ignoring it. Conflagration ensues.

What do you guys think is going to be the end of our civilisation?
And is there any hope for the one that comes after?
(I think there might be - humans are very adaptable. It's going to be fucking awful for those individuals of us who live through it, but humanity as a whole will survive. In some form)

ETA: I watched Supergirl today. I wish with all my heart that Lynda Carter was the POTUS and that speech she made about the Statue of Liberty was how America was thinking... Then I saw this. And I cried and cried.

... is all I ever seem to post these days, isn't it?

I have been back to the quack to discuss my test results. The quack did a manual exam* and has booked me in with the vampire** and the batscanner***.

I am still in constant pain, and the bleeding is still constant.

If I am grumpy with you at all, this is probably the reason. I can at least now self-medicate with gin.

* Yes, THAT kind of manual exam. And I had to explain to her what a mooncup was. And having my uterus prodded at from all angles did not help with the pain.
** Apparently not everyone refers to having bloods taken as "going to see the vampire"? I'm sure the seasoned phlebotomist will have heard the term before

So, this morning I phoned Samsung, again.
To tell them that the courier had failed to turn up to collect my phone, again.
The lady on the phone was lovely, really lovely, and rescheduled my pickup for tomorrow morning, and was laughing with me when I said "I'll speak to you tomorrow afternoon, then" as we finished the call.

About ten minutes after I got off the phone there was a knock on the door, and it was the courier. To pick up my phone. Completely unscheduled and with no warning. And he made a crack about exploding phones because that's clearly helpful.

*headdesk headdesk headdesk*

So I phoned the nice lady back and she remained nice and was sympathetic about how crazy this is all being...

This miracle having occurred, I decided to check the tracking number for my replacement, not as good but at least non-explodey, phone. For 11 days the tracking number has been coming up as "not recognised" on the Royal Mail website. Suddenly, today, it's showing as being processed in Manchester.

OfC this does speak to it coming from Taiwan, where the seller is, rather than Ireland which is where the seller claimed it was. In which case there's going to be a hell of a lot of import duty to pay on it. So I'm not celebrating yet...

But am I right to be cautiously optimistic here?

I mean, so far with time off waiting in for courier and accessories bought it's cost me a considerable sum owning the Galaxy Note 7 that I'm almost certainly not going to get back, and I've been some time without a working phone, and all in all it's been a bit of a mare. But is there now light at the end of the tunnel?
