Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh President of the United States (1829–37). He was born near the end of the colonial era, somewhere near the then-unmarked border between North and South Carolina, into a recently immigrated Scots-Irish farming family of relatively modest means. During the American Revolutionary War Jackson, whose family supported the revolutionary cause, acted as a courier. He was captured, at age 13, and mistreated by his British captors. He later became a lawyer. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and then to the U.S. Senate. In 1801, Jackson was appointed colonel in the Tennessee militia, which became his political as well as military base. Jackson owned hundreds of slaves who worked on the Hermitage plantation which he acquired in 1804. He killed a man in a duel in 1806, over a matter of honor regarding his wife Rachel. Jackson gained national fame through his role in the War of 1812, most famously where he won a decisive victory over the main British invasion army at the Battle of New Orleans. In response to conflict with the Seminole in Spanish Florida, Jackson invaded the territory in 1818. This led directly to the Adams–Onís Treaty, which formally transferred Florida from Spain to the United States.

Plot: It's the early nineteenth century Washington. Young adult Margaret O'Neal - Peggy to most that know her - is the daughter of Major William O'Neal, who is the innkeeper of the establishment where most out-of-town politicians and military men stay when they're in Washington. Peggy is pretty and politically aware. She is courted by several of those politicians and military men who all want to marry her, except for the one with who she is truly in love. Because of her personal situation at the time, she, in 1828, becomes the unofficial first lady to help her old friend - "old" both in terms of age and length of time - Andrew Jackson, who has just been elected President of the United States. Jackson and Peggy have the same political outlook, where the union of the states is paramount, especially when many states see their rights as being more important than the union. Jackson had a rough ride during the election in large part because his wife, Rachel Jackson, was seen as a pipe smoking hayseed, unfit to live in the White House. On her deathbed, Rachel asked Peggy to take care of Jackson. Peggy, as unofficial first lady, gets as rough a ride as Rachel did, because of her own marital status and the undue influence she may assert over Jackson. Because of her relationship with Jackson, Peggy has to decide which of the conflicting issues of her political convictions, being with the man she truly loves or respectability is of greatest priority in her life.

In which John Green teaches you about the presidency of Andrew Jackson So how did a president with astoundingly bad fiscal policies end up on the $20 bill? That's a question we can't answer, but we can tell you how Jackson got to be president, and how he changed the country when he got the job. Jackson's election was more democratic than any previous presidential election. More people were able to vote, and they picked a doozie. Jackson was a well-known war hero, and he was elected over his longtime political enemy, John Quincy Adams. Once Jackson was in office, he did more to expand executive power than any of the previous occupants of the White House. He used armed troops to collect taxes, refused to enforce legislation and supreme court legislation, and hired and fired his staff based o...

One of the most famous duels in American history occurred in Logan County and involved a future U.S. president. "Dueling With Andrew Jackson" on this segment of the President's Day episode of Kentucky Life on KET. Back in 1806, Andrew Jackson, then a rising star in Tennessee politics, was known for his hot temper. Angered over a slur on his wife's honor—and a charge of cheating on a horse-racing bet—Jackson challenged fellow horse breeder and plantation owner Charles Dickinson to a duel. Dueling was outlawed in Tennessee, so the duel took place across state lines, at Harrison's Mills on the Red River here in Logan County, on May 30. The spot is about two miles from Adairsville. Dickinson got off the first shot and wounded Jackson, breaking two ribs. Jackson—to everyone's amazement—remai...

Marcel the 13-year-old music journalist interviews Andrew Jackson Jihad at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, California. Special thanks to Marc, the band's tour manager who filmed the interview, and Launch Brigade for helping upload the interview. After we did the interview, me and lead singer Sean headed over to the local skate park to do some shredding. The next morning, we all met up yet again to have some fun down at the arcade at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Me, Sean, Ben and the band's tour manager (who filmed the interview) played a couple rounds of air hockey for some footage they were shooting for an upcoming music video. After that we then headed over to the local record shop Metavinyl to pick up some goodies. It was overall just an unforgettable experience that I will be foreve...

I talked to Sean Bonnette from the band Andrew Jackson Jihad. Andrew Jackson Jihad, or AJJ, is one of the most influential folk punk bands today, with some of the most wonderfully cynical lyrics I've ever heard. Last September saw the release of their newest album, Can't Maintain, on Asian Man Records. The whole interview can be found here: http://www.punkcdsampler.com/sean-bonnette-interview.html This interview was done live during my PunkCDSampler Live Show, broadcasted on my site.
