On this episode of Ignition presented by Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com), Motor Trend Senior Features Editor Jason Cammisa explores the virtues of the BMW M4 GTS. The M4 GTS is BMW’s solution for those who think the M4 is too soft, too sober, and too understated. Just 700 of these special cars will be produced, and only 300 of them are coming to the U.S. It costs a breathtaking $135,195, but delivers 68 more horsepower than the M4, for a total of 493 hp. Helping the engine make that power is water injection—a trick we haven’t seen in a production car for more than 50 years. With fully revised suspension, sticky track tires, and no back seats, the GTS promises to be the ultimate M4. Then again, we’ve been fooled before. Could the GTS be an overpriced, silly poseur machine for guys who live in their racing suits? Can the GTS clear a speed bump? Heck, can it do a burnout over a speed bump? Cammisa finds out and then hands the keys to SCCA Hall-of-Fame driver Randy Pobst to see how much faster it is than a regular M4 around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

After Motor Trend named the all-new Camaro our 2016 Car of the Year, Angus Mackenzie wrote an article entitled “Revelation” in which he said that the Camaro SS was a better driver’s car than the then new BMW 340i. Thing is, Jason Cammisa and Jonny Lieberman have both driven the 340i, and they felt that being better than said Bimmer isn’t much of an accomplishment. Being better than the much-ballyhooed M4 on the other hand, well, that would be something. After all, the M4 is the car that all other companies look to when trying to figure out how to break into the luxury performance game. But does a Camaro – any Camaro – no matter how sweet it drives really have a shot at knocking the German king off its throne? BMW M4
The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, the BMW M GmbH, the M4 is one of the fastest M cars ever produced by BMW achieving 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds (equipped with 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox). Part of the renumbering that BMW splits the 3 Series coupe and convertible models to the 4 Series (to further differentiate with the 3 Series sedans), the M4 replaces the M3 Coupe and Convertible models, as well as the Gran Coupe. Upgrades over the standard 4-Series include: a very powerful and responsive, twin turbocharged engine; improved handling, suspension, and braking systems; aerodynamic body enhancements; interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) badging; the significantly reduced weight compared to the standard 4 series and its predecessor with an all-new stiffer chassis and extensive use of carbon fiber, especially the roof of the car.

History
BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft-engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production as the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted in 1923, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.

The M4 GTS is BMW’s solution for those who think the M4 is too soft, too sober, and too understated. Just 700 of these special cars will be produced, and only 300 of them are coming to the U.S. It costs a breathtaking $135,195, but delivers 68 more horsepower than the M4, for a total of 493 hp. Helping the engine make that power is water injection—a trick we haven’t seen in a production car for more than 50 years. With fully revised suspension, sticky track tires, and no back seats, the GTS promises to be the ultimate M4. Then again, we’ve been fooled before. Could the GTS be an overpriced, silly poseur machine for guys who live in their racing suits? Can the GTS clear a speed bump? Heck, can it do a burnout over a speed bump? Cammisa finds out and then hands the keys to SCCA Hall-of-Fame driver Randy Pobst to see how much faster it is than a regular M4 around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
