Trinidad (Spanish: "Trinity") is the larger and more populous of the two major islands and numerous landforms which make up the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies 11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America. Though part of the South American continent, from a socio-economic standpoint it is often referred to as the southernmost island in the Caribbean. With an area of 4,768 km2 (1,841 sq mi)
Many believe the original name for the island in the Arawaks' language was "Iëre" which meant "Land of the Humming Bird". Some believe that "Iere" was actually a mispronunciation or corruption by early colonists of the Arawak word "Kairi" which simply means "Island". Christopher Columbus renamed it "La Isla de la Trinidad" ("The Island of the Trinity"), fulfilling a vow he had made before setting out on his third voyage of exploration.
Caribs and Arawaks lived in Trinidad long before Christopher Columbus encountered the islands on his third voyage in 1498. Tobago changed hands between the British, French, Dutch and Courlanders, but eventually ended up in British hands. Trinidad remained Spanish until 1797, but it was largely settled by French colonists from the French Caribbean, especially Martinique. In 1889 the two islands became a single British Crown colony. Trinidad and Tobago obtained self-governance in 1958 and independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.

The country covers an area of 5,128 square kilometres (1,980 sq mi) and consists of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, with numerous smaller landforms. The two main islands are divided into nine regions, and one ward. Trinidad and Tobago lies outside of the hurricane belt.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit. Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407. VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killing...

Both my trips to #Trinidad were amazing and wonderful, but they both also ended on a sour note. Leaving the country on both occasions, I had negative run ins with airport security where I was unfairly profiled and searched for a second time. This most recent time they decided I needed to be re-checked an hour after I had already cleared security. Racism is alive and well, and one of the best ways to combat that is to be the voice against this encouraged systemic form of bullying. Travel video about destination Trinidad. Located to the south of the Caribbean island of Cuba, Trinidad was founded by the Spaniard, Velazquez and in the 18th century the city experienced great wealth and recognition through the cultivation of sugar cane. The exclusive palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city with tall wooden gates, barred windows and original roof tiles that characterise the style of bygone days. The Palacio Padron is located on the Plaza Mayor, the centre of the city. A few years ago the palace was lovingly restored in painstaking detail and transformed into an archaeological museum. Around the main square the most beautiful palaces stand in rows and are an impressive indicator of the colonial lifestyle enjoyed by the former sugar aristocr...
Travel video about destination Trinidad. Lying to the south of Cuba, the Caribbean island of Trinidad, an exotic tourist paradise of sun, sea and sand, it also contains some treasures of the past due to the influence of the Spaniards and also the wealth created by the cultivation and export of sugar. The exclusive palaces and mansions of the sugar barons have made their mark and exhibits in the Architectural Museum demonstrate their affluent lifestyle. Lush vegetation abounds on the island but the bell tower of the Iglesia La Santisima is visible from most aspects and the Plaza Mayor is a lively focal point.

There once was a story
From a thousand yesterdays
I read it in this ancient book
When the old man passed away
I drifted through the pages
And it's magic filled my eyes
I dreamed she once loved me
In the land called Trinidad
By the wind
Sailed the water
She calls my name
To come on back to hold me
Trinidad
Trinidad
The silence on the ocean
Stopped the silence in my heart
She still sings to me softly
Through the night
And in the dark
By the wind
Sailed the water
She calls my name
To come on back to hold me
Trinidad
Take me back (3X)
Trinidad
She waits by her window
And she shines a light for me
To help me through the harbor
In the land called Trinidad
By the wind
Sailed the water
She calls my name
To come on back to hold me
Trinidad
Trinidad (Trinidad)
Take me back (3X)
(Take me back)
Trinidad (Trinidad)
Come on home to hold me
(Come on home)
Trinidad
Hey hey hey
(Trinidad, Take me back)
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
(Trinidad, Take me back)
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
