Why is the Australia public, and the Australian media, seemingly so captured by the U.S. election?

Peter Hartcher: I’d suggest two explanations for the intense public interest. First is the understandable reason that it’s a mind-bogglingly awful spectacle. Second is the sound reason that it threatens serious disruption to some of the foundations of Australian security and prosperity. For the media, add a third reason – it rates well.
