This is a list of sovereign states and dependent territories in Africa. It includes both fully recognized states, states with limited recognition, and dependent territories of both African and non-African states. It lists 54 sovereign states and 10 non-sovereign territories.
Malta and parts of France, Italy, Portugal and Spain are located on the African continental plate, some considerably closer to the African than European mainland, but politically are generally considered European by convention. Similarly, the island of Socotra is also on the African plate and much closer to Africa, but is politically part of the Asian state of Yemen. Egypt, although extending into Asia through the Sinai Peninsula, is considered an African state.
The following 54 fully recognised states are all members of the United Nations, and as of 2015, all except Morocco and the Central African Republic are members of the African Union.

Although South Africa continues to feature in the top ten performing countries on the continent, it also now stands tenth amongst those nations who have experienced its greatest decline in good governance over the past year according to the 2016 Ibrahim Index of African Governance. The state of the South African nation this past year has left much to be desired in terms of politics, governance, abuse of state institutions and funds, and their collective effects on the country’s economy and image. However embarrassed or shocked one may be to see how the mighty have somewhat fallen, is South Africa any different to the rest of the continent in the way it governs itself. Having over the past 20 years heralded itself as the gateway to Africa and its beaconing star, the story the country has ...

Changing the limits on term limits – it’s a scenario in some countries where presidents seek to rewrite their constitutions to stay in power. In Africa, this year alone, leaders in Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo and Congo Republic have challenged term limits for heads of state. How long is too long in office, and what impact do Africa's “sit-tight presidents” have on a country’s development? In an attempt to boost trade and investment opportunities abroad, India has welcomed heads of state, policymakers, and businessmen from every country in Africa, marking the largest ever India-Africa summit. Leaders from some 54 nations descended on New Delhi this week for a summit aimed at ushering in a 'partnership of prosperity' for Africa and Africans. In contrast to the economic powerhouse China, which has been accused of exploiting the continent's vast mineral and energy resources, India positioned itself as a fairer partner to a continent tipped as the global economic growth engine of the coming decades. With an estimated population of 1.1 billion, Africa's total GDP is worth over $2.8tn and has been growing at over 5 percent every year. And with India's trade with the continent ...
The topic of African nationalism has been repeatedly contested and redefined over the past century. At the end of the nineteenth century, the European powers divided the continent and ruled virtually all of Africa, and African nations lost their sovereignty. During the 1950s and 1960s, when Africans began to seriously resist colonial rule, Africa underwent a major transformation and each colony eventually gained its freedom. Africans, in general, united in hopes of regaining their sovereignty. Nationalism originally referred to the process of uniting and regaining freedom from European rule, but it was also defined by pioneer African leaders to mean the creation of new nations as well as their economic and political transformation.
Seventeen African nations gained their independence in 1960, but the dreams of the independence era were short-lived. Africa states of independence tells the story of some of those countries - stories of mass exploitation, of the ecstasy of independence and of how - with liberation - a new, covert scramble for resources was born. http://www.presstv.com/Program/210432.html The UK Prime Minister, David Cameron has threatened Commonwealth countries of withholding general budget support if they do not reform legislation banning homosexuality. He raised this at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia last week. Ending the bans on homosexuality was one of the recommendations of an internal report into the future relevance of the Commonwealth. But leaders failed to reach agreement on that at the summit. Mr Cameron says those receiving UK aid should "adhere to proper human rights". He told the BBC that "British aid should have more strings attached and that he had spoken with "a number of African countries" and more pressure had been applied by Foreign Secretary William Hague. Some 41 nation...
Africa's millionaire explosion: 10 countries where the ultra - wealthy are booming Africa's wealthy elite is expanding at a dramatic pace. In fact, according to a report by New World Wealth, the number of African millionaires has risen at twice the pace of the rest of the world in the last 15 years. Overall in Africa, the number of HNWIs has risen by 145% over the period, while the world in general has seen an increas...
Cameroon is one of the few African countries enjoying true ethnic and religious harmony since its independence. It seems like a miracle when observing Cameroon’s extreme diversity of more than 200 ethnic groups and about fifty churches and religious cults yet Christians, Muslims and Animists are respectful of each other’s beliefs, and coexist peacefully. The neighbouring countries of Chad, Nigeria and Congo have all been faced with civil wars or religious clashes. What is the secret of such a stability and balance in Cameroon ? From North to South, from small villages to big cities, this film lets us meet the people of Cameroon. Muslims or Christians, sorcerers, priests and homeless kids tell us about their hopes and fears. Along the way, surprising characters reveal themselves. They wond...
First it was Burundi, now South Africa wants out. It says it will withdraw from the International Criminal Court - which was set up to prosecute those accused of serious crimes against humanity. Several African states have accused the ICC of unfairly targeting the continent. Uganda's president went so far as to call it "useless". South Africa's decision comes a year after it was criticised for ignoring an order to arrest Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir while he was visiting the country. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Bashir, who's accused of committing war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region. So, is the ICC biased against African nations? Presenter: Martine Dennis Guests: Dewa Mavhinga - Senior Researcher & Head of South Africa Office, Human Rights Watch Courtenay Griffiths ...
