A Perth pub that offers "a whole heap of chicken parmigianas" has received the tick of approval from Radio 6PR personality Karl Langdon as his search for Perth's best pub in 2016 nears an end.
The Boab Tavern was a finalist in the 2015 competition and, once again, did not disappoint Langdon when he visited for lunch on Wednesday.
"The food menu is extensive," he told Radio 6PR mornings presenter Gary Adshead.
"For the day, they had their parmigianas on special; they've got the classic chicken parmi, the Spanish chicken parmi, the boab chicken parmi, the texmex chicken parmi – so they had a whole heap of parmis.
"The senior specials from 11am to 3pm... you can have a minute steak and they've got the classic chicken parmi [for $18], that's unusual isn't it?"
Landgon said the restaurant table service at the High Wycombe pub was great but he did mark the tavern down for being a tad too generous with its condiments.
"The bad thing about yesterday is too much sauce on the salad – so just pull back on the sauce – it was an aioli but it was all over it and it was just a bit too much, so that was the one criticism," he said.
Adshead came to the Boab's defence, suggesting "maybe they slipped when they were pouring it on, maybe the lid fell off".
And his gripe that Perth beverage prices are too high was stirred again when he heard a pint of beer at the Boab cost $12, but seemed happier with the wine list prices, which offered a bottle of house wine for a reasonable $25.
The venue has three outdoor beer gardens, a retractable roof and big screens in its front sports bar and outdoor areas.
Most of the main dishes were priced around the mid-$20s and mid-$30s mark, with a Spanish chicken parmigiana one of the most expensive on the menu, setting you back $38 compared to a classic parmigiana, which costs $26.
A surf and turf however will see you $55 out of pocket.
Langdon described the Boab Tavern as a "good suburban pub".
Frontrunners to take out the 2016 Radio 6PR Pub of the Year competition include the Ashby Bar and Bistro, The Duke Bar & Bistro, the High Wycombe Tavern, The Whistling Kite, The Kewdale Tavern, Odin Tavern, The Currambine Bar & Bistro and the Cornerstone Ale House.
The competition will wrap up in December.
