The Canon FD lens mount is a physical standard for connecting a photographic lens to a 35mm single-lens reflex camera body. The standard was developed by Canon of Japan and was introduced in March 1971 with the Canon F-1 camera. It served as the Canon SLR interchangeable lens mounting system until the 1987 introduction of the Canon EOS series cameras, which use the newer EF lens mount. The FD mount lingered through the release of the 1990 Canon T60, the last camera introduced in the FD system, and the end of the Canon New F-1 product cycle in 1992.
The FD mount was based upon and replaced Canon's earlier FL mount (which in turn had replaced the R mount); FD-mount cameras can use FL lenses in stop-down metering mode. Though never officially explained by Canon, others have attempted to assign a meaning to the "FD" designation. One such attempt states that the "FD" notation stands for "Focal-plane shutter with Dual linkage for diaphragm control"; in actuality, there were two linkages and two signals: the automatic aperture lever, aperture signal lever, full aperture signal pin, and automatic exposure lock pin. This is twice the previous lens series, which used the "FL" designation, said to mean "Focal-plane shutter, Linked mount."
In this episode I give you an overview of Canon FD lenses. These lenses were made for Canon 35mm film cameras from about 1970-1990. Many of these lenses are fantastically sharp and can be had for bargain prices. The Canon FD 50mm F1.4 is about $300 less than its EF successor, but it’s said that the newer nifty fifty was designed with similar optics as the FD. If this is the case, then it’s within our best interest to see how the two match up. There's a lot of high quality glass out there that can be had on the cheap until the word really gets out, and that's the FD line of lenses made for Canon film cameras. We'll get started looking at some of them and later we'll see some of the downsides to using FDs, but for the prices you don't have to put up with a lot of headaches. For the video I mentioned by Caleb Pike about pros and cons of FD lenses and their use, visit this link: http://vimeo.com/17805517

I look at a Canon FD 200mm 2.8 lens and make sure the Aperture Control is working after purchasing this lens on EBay. The lens is around 40 years old but will have bring an affordable fast zoom to my Sony camera. I plan to adapt the lens to my Sony a7ii camera using a Fotodiox adapter. Fotodiox E to FD adapter - http://amzn.to/1RhkCAV Sony a7ii - http://goo.gl/rznAwR Canon FD 200mm 2.8 - http://goo.gl/J3svdB I wanted to give a quick look on the new lens I just picked up. It’s a Canon FD 200mm 2.8 manual focus lens. We will be using manual focus for my purposes. The FD was introduced in the FD line in the1970’s so this lens is about 40 years old. This is really an FDN or FD new or the new FD and physically this should be silver I believe right in here. That’s the only physical difference....

What's up everybody! Check out this quick video review of the Canon FD 50mm f1.4 Adapted to the Sony A6000. I purchased this lens from my local thrift store and got a fantastic deal! The lens came bundled in a camera bag with a third party FD mount 28mm f2.8 lens and a Canon T50 film camera. I was so excited when I saw the bag listed for only $20 dollars! Before finding the lot I'd seen the 50/f1.4 selling for much more online, so I jumped on the opportunity, and I'm so glad that I did:). This is a very popular lens, but let me go over a few details: The lens was made in Japan, it's very solidly built, and is constructed of metal and hard plastic. It's stylized very similar to other FD bayonet lenses, with a green and white color way. It weighs in at 8 ounces and sits 1.75 inches t...
EDIT: I paid £35 for this lens! The 24mm cost £70 which I will review soon :-) This video shows sample images from the Canon 50mm f1.8 FD lens on the Sony A7Rii. I forgot to say, I did have the Sony 55mm f1.8 lens at one point, but it arrived with so much dust inside it that I returned it!
