Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba (Spanish: República de Cuba ), is a country comprising the islands of Cuba, Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos in the Caribbean Sea. The capital and largest city Havana is 365 km (227 mi) from Miami, Florida. Geographically, Cuba is considered part of North America. Culturally, it is considered part of Latin America.
Prior to Spanish colonization in the late 15th century, Cuba was inhabited by Amerindian tribes. It remained a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898, which led to nominal independence as a de facto U.S. protectorate in 1902. As a fragile republic, Cuba attempted to strengthen its democratic system, but mounting political radicalization and social strife culminated in the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Further unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965, the country has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba.
Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana, [la aˈβana]) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Buena Vista, meaning "good view" in Spanish, may refer to:
(by state)
The Buena Vista Social Club was a members' club in Havana, Cuba, that closed in the 1940s, as well as a 1990s band, a 1997 album, a 1999 film, and an unofficial brand name representing the musical spirit of the original Havana club.
The original Buena Vista Social Club held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play during the 1940s. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity.
The recording, named Buena Vista Social Club after the Havana institution, became an international success, and the ensemble was encouraged to perform with a full line-up in Amsterdam in April 1998 (two nights). German director Wim Wenders captured the performance on film and the one that followed on the 1st of July 1998 in Carnegie Hall, New York City for a documentary—also called Buena Vista Social Club—that included interviews with the musicians conducted in Havana. Wenders' film was released on 4 June 1999 to critical acclaim, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary feature and winning numerous accolades including Best Documentary at the European Film Awards.
A social club may refer to a group of people or the place where they meet, generally formed around a common interest, occupation or activity (e.g. hunting, fishing, science, politics, or charity work). This article covers only three distinct types of social clubs, the historic gentlemen's clubs, the modern activities clubs, and an introduction to fraternities and sororities. This article does not cover a variety of other types of clubs having some social characteristics, for example specific single-activity based clubs, military officers' clubs, university clubs and country clubs.
Working men's clubs developed in Britain during Victorian times as institutes where working class men could attend lectures and take part in recreational pursuits. The Reverend Henry Solly founded the Working Men's Club and Institute Union (CIU) for this purpose in 1862. Many middle class social reformers founded these clubs during the temperance movement as a place to relax without alcohol, but in time this changed. They became a combination of public houses (pubs), music-halls, and clubs, becoming places to be entertained, to drink socially, and to play bar games. Their mainly working-class patronage is not seen as fashionable among some sections of society today, and they have come under increasing pressure regarding attitudes to membership rights for women and ethnic minorities. The CIU was heavily involved in resisting the smoking ban in private clubs; it remains to be seen how many survive the change of law.

In this short video I explain some of the unique aspects of visiting Cuba from getting around to getting a room. The dual currency/economy makes even the simple task of changing money an interesting experience! Due to food shortages Cuba isn't exactly a great culinary destination. Compared to the rest of Central America it can be quite pricey for tourists. Be aware local wages can be as low as $15 USD a month and as tourism provides such a great influx of cash, there are many tourist touts and rampant prostitution. In the same way that tourists visit Detroit to photograph the 'ruin porn' Havana is quite visually stunning. Most of the cars are big and bold American made pre-1960 models and the architecture features a stunning array of styles from colonial to neo-classic, art deco to ar...
The timeless, diverse beauty of Havana. Havana was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish and played strategic role in the connection between the New and the Old World. Old Havana and its fortification system is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Because of the many locations in this video I thought it will be distracting to provide so many titles, instead here is the list for anyone curious to know what any specific place is: Plaza de la Catedral & Catedral de San Cristóbal (0:06, 3:42), Plaza de Armas (0:50), Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (0:55), Castillo de la Real Fuerza (1:06), La Casa de los Arabes (1:27), Casa de la Obra Pia (2:00), Plaza de San Francisco (2:10), Plaza Vieja (2:36), Seminario de San Carlos y San Ambrosio (4:07), Castillo del Morro (4:29), Malec...
This video is my attempt to document Cuba before the inevitable takeover of American Corporations... and to have a little fun :D Follow me on instagram! @calmckinley btw if anyone was wondering it is technically still illegal to travel to Cuba as an American citizen so to get there we had to book a flight to Mexico, get a Cuban visa in Mexico City airport, then catch a flight to Havana (of which there were almost none). For our first day in Havana we booked a solo walking tour. The tour guide took us from the Hotel Inglaterra and Capitolio Nacional to the area known as Old havana. Here we visited the bars and places frequented by ernest Hemingway. We were told the stories and history of Havana and of Cuba in general as we walked the streets and soaked up the atmosphere. Old Havana was definitely our favourite part of the city and in many ways the holiday as a whole. CLICK MY LINKS! When I boarded my flight and started my adventure to Havana with Cuba Travel Services, I had no idea what to expect. But what I discovered was a place that makes your soul sing, your feet dance, and your eyes wide with wonder. This is Havana, like you've never seen it before. Day 1: An Old Havana Walking Tour The trip starts the Cuban way, with a mojito. Hemmingway's favorite comes from la Bodeguita del Medio. As you wonder through Old Havana's many squares you'll be swept away by their beauty. My favorite, Plaza de Armas. Every day in Plaza de Armas there's a local market but it's much more than just books. You can find old cameras, antiques, and it's a perfect place to soak in local street life. Day 2: On day 2 We're off to Vinales for a feast at El Paraiso, Wilfredo's organic fa...

Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba. Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars. But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you ...
This travel video of Cuba is a collection of many videos taken in our holiday trip to Cuba in January/February 2015. If you ever have questions about some locations, just let me know and I will tell you. Hope you enjoy it - if you like it, like it on youtube and share it :) The song in the background is from One Republic called "Feel again". I have no rights of the song, I just used it for private reasons.
Travel video about destination Cuba. Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but...

Cuba is the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to the colonial past, Havana - the capital - has plenty of palaces, nice mansions, cathedrals, strong forts, and shady alleys. On the streets the automobiles of the 50’s from United States create a huge contrast with the coaches. Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as wel...
