Australian Open 2016: Steve Williams confident Adam Scott can win another major

By Adam Pengilly

Steve Williams doesn't have to be on a bag anymore, but his unwavering faith Adam Scott can win another major means Tiger Woods' long-time caddie is not ready to slip into retirement yet.

Having watched the former world No.1's Australian Open assault fizzle over the weekend at Royal Sydney, Williams has no doubt Scott can add to his history-making US Masters win in 2013.

"Absolutely," Williams said when asked if Scott was capable of winning another of golf's big four. "I have, I guess, a personal goal of mine ... I would dearly love to see Adam win another major and that's what keeps me going.

"He played at a very high level all the time and you've got to try to peak for one of those tournaments. He did that so well in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He peaked at the right time. He only won one of them – and that shows you how difficult they are – but it's a great prospect to try to win another one. You get enthused about those tournaments."

Scott's fast start to the 2016 season – which included two Tour victories – now seems a distant memory after failing to finish in the top 15 for any of the majors.

And his confidence was dented further before this week's World Cup of Golf after a sluggish showing in the national championship despite a blistering second round which had him right in contention.

Scott, who will partner Marc Leishman in the teams-based format at Kingston Heath, finished six shots adrift of now two-time Australian Open winner Jordan Spieth, who survived a three-way play-off to return to America with a morale-boosting win.

But Williams, who is yet to confirm his exact arrangement with Scott beyond this year, is being fuelled by a desire to help the 36-year-old to another major.

"I've caddied for 38 years and it's a long time," Williams said. "I love the game of golf, but there's a lot of travel involved if you caddy all the time which I'm not interested in doing anymore.

"Having said that, the weeks I do caddy – particularly the majors, I love the majors because they're great tournaments and anyone who gets to caddy in them or play in them has to feel fortunate – I really enjoy not having to do it full-time.

"Adam is one of the most consistent players to play the game. This is my ninth tournament this year and he has played pretty reasonable in every tournament he's played in."

Scott hand-picked Leishman as his partner for the World Cup after world No.1 Jason Day didn't return to Australia to rehabilitate a back injury.

But Australia will still start favourites to claim back-to-back titles in an event featuring other major champions Jimmy Walker (America), who will partner world No.12 Rickie Fowler, and Graeme McDowell who will team with Ireland's Shane Lowry.
