Lydbrook is a civil parish in the Forest of Dean, a local government district in the English county of Gloucestershire. It is situated on the north west edge of the Forest of Dean's present legal boundary proper. It comprises the districts of Lower Lydbrook, Upper Lydbrook, Joys Green and Worrall Hill. It has a mile and a half long main street, reputed to be the longest main street of any village in England.
The area now forming the present village of Lydbrook has been inhabited throughout history. Artifacts from Hangerberry and Eastbach on the south west corner of the parish, and Lower Lydbrook show evidence of widespread activity from the Mesolithic period (Middle Stone Age 10,000 - 4000 BC) to the present. Flint stone tools from surrounding fields confirm that the area was occupied and farmed for more than 4,000 years.
The Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and north-west, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east.
The area is characterised by more than 110 square kilometres (42.5 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest crown forest in England, the largest being New Forest. Although the name is used loosely to refer to the part of Gloucestershire between the Severn and Wye, the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since medieval times. In 1327 it was defined to cover only the royal demesne and parts of parishes within the hundred of St Briavels, and after 1668 comprised the royal demesne only. The Forest proper is within the civil parishes of West Dean, Lydbrook, Cinderford, Ruspidge, and Drybrook, together with a strip of land in the parish of English Bicknor.
Lydbrook Viaduct was built in 1872 to connect Cinderford to the Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth line via Serridge junction. Was last used for Passengers in 1929 and freight in 1951. I filmed the destruction of the Viaduct in 1966. With the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley attracting many many tourists the removal of the railway lines throughout the whole of the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean must call into question the serious lack of vision the Authorities had at that period!

To celebrate its corporate sponsorship of Lydbrook Band, Forest of Dean Stone Firms welcomed the band to Barnhill Quarry for a unique performance. Kitted out in hard hats, hi-vis vests and wellies, all 27 members of the band took to the quarry bench to play the title music of The Flintstones; a suitable request from Forest of Dean Stone Firms’ managing director, Nick Horton. As the sun set on a scorching Wednesday evening in the Forest of Dean, Glos, the band completed the set with Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of Hope & Glory).
This lorry angered local residents by driving through flood water today at Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean.
