Troubleshoot problems

I got an error when creating my family

Age requirement

You must be 18 or older (20 in Japan) to manage a family group. If you're between ages 13-17, you can still join someone else's family group.

You're already in a family group

You can only be part of one family group at a time. To create a new family group, delete your current family group and then create a new one.

Note: You can only switch family groups once every 12 months.

Account not supported

You can't create a family with a Google for Work or Google for Education account.

Can't create family

You can only change family groups once every 12 months. You'll need to wait 12 months until you can create or join a new family.

I was using content, but it got removed from Family Library

If someone removes content from the Family Library, if they leave the family group entirely, or if your family group is deleted, you have to purchase the content in order to to use it.

Once you purchase it, you'll pick up where you left off. If you bought in-app purchases in a game, you'll get those back after you purchase the game.

I purchased content, but I can't add it to Family Library

If you can't add content you bought to Family Library:

  • The content might not be eligible to be added to Family Library (see above).
  • You used your personal credit or debit card instead of the family payment method to purchase movies or TV shows after you set up or joined Family Library.
  • Your family payment method may be invalid. If you're the family manager, update your family payment method to a valid credit card so that you and your family members can add new purchases to Family Library.
"Use a different payment method if you want to add this to Family Library"

If you see this message, you won't be able to add the purchase to your Family Library after you buy it.

If you want to add the purchase to your Family Library, pay using the family payment method or a gift card instead.

"Your family payment method is invalid"

If you see this message, your family payment method is invalid. If you're the family manager, update your family payment method to a valid credit card so that you and your family members can add purchases to Family Library.

While the family payment method is invalid, purchases made using other forms of payment won't be automatically added to Family Library. After your family payment method is updated, you’ll need to manually add those items to Family Library from the details page.
