Join a family on Google Play

When you join a family group, you share purchases in your Family Library, and you can use the family payment method to make purchases.

How family groups work

When you join a family group, you can:

  • Share purchases: Anyone in your family can add purchased apps, games, books, movies, and TV shows to your Family Library.
  • Use the family payment method: You can use the family payment method for purchases, or your own payment method.
  • Use a Google Play Music family plan: For a monthly fee, your family manager can subscribe to a family plan.

Join a family group 

If someone has signed up for Family Library or subscribed to the Play Music family plan and invited you, you'll get an email or text message with your invitation. Follow the instructions on the invitation to join the family group.

What information family members see about one another

When you join a family, your family members may see your name, photo, and email address.

Because your family manager is responsible for the family payment method, they'll get a receipt that shows items you purchased when you use the family payment method.

Requirements for joining a family

Once a family manager creates their family group, they can invite up to 5 family members.

To join a family group, you must:

  • Be 13 years of age or older
  • Have a Google Account
  • Live in the same country as the family manager
  • Not be part of another family group

Note: You can only switch family groups once a year.

What happens when you leave your family group

  • You won't be able to make purchases using the family payment method. Any pending purchases might still be charged.
  • You'll lose access to Family Library, and any items added by family members.
  • Any purchases you added to Family Library will be removed, and your family members will lose access to them.
  • If your family manager purchased the Google Play Music family plan, you'll lose access to it.
  • You'll keep your Google Account, and any content you purchased using the family payment method.

Leave your family group

  1. Open the Play Store app Play Store.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Account and then Family and then View family members.
  3. Tap your name.
  4. In the top right, tap More More and then Leave family and then Leave group.
  5. Type your password, then tap Confirm. Your family manager will get an email notification that you've left the family group.

Once you leave your family group, you can accept an invitation to join a different family group, or you can create your own.

Note: You can only switch families every 12 months. If you leave a family group and join a new one, you won't be able to join another family group for 12 months.

Troubleshoot problems

I got an error

"Can't join family group" error

  • Switching families: You can only switch families once a year. You'll see this error if you've already switched families once this year.
  • Country restriction: You can't join a family if you and the family manager aren't registered in the same country on Google Play.

"Your family group is disabled" error

You'll see this message if your family manager's Google Account has been disabled or deleted. Your family manager should visit myaccount.google.com to restore their account.

"You're in a family group" error

You can only be in one family group at a time. If you want to join a different family group, you need to leave your current family group, then join the new one.

 

My family manager deleted our family group

Here's what happens if your family manager deletes your family group:

  • You won't be able to make purchases using the family payment method. Any pending purchases might still be charged.
  • You'll lose access to Family Library, and any items added by family members.
  • Any purchases you added to Family Library will be removed, and your family members will lose access to them.
  • If your family manager purchased the Google Play Music family plan, you'll lose access to it.
  • You'll keep your Google Account, and any content you purchased using the family payment method.

Note: You can only change family groups once per year. If you join or create a new family group on Google Play, you won’t be able to join another one for 12 months.

Problems with my invitation

My invitation expired

Invitations to join a family expire in two weeks. If you still want to join that family, contact the family manager and ask them to send you a new invitation.

My invitation was already used

Each invitation has a unique sign-up link that can only be used once. If you forward your invitation to someone else, they can use your unique link to join the family group. If you used your invitation with another Google Account, you can leave the family group and ask for another invitation to use with your other email address.
