The study of surface characteristics (or surface properties and processes) is a broad category of Mars science that examines the nature of the materials making up the Martian surface. The study evolved from telescopic and remote-sensing techniques developed by astronomers to study planetary surfaces. However, it has increasingly become a subdiscipline of geology as automated spacecraft bring ever-improving resolution and instrument capabilities. By using characteristics such as color, albedo, and thermal inertia and analytical tools such as reflectance spectroscopy and radar, scientists are able to study the chemistry and physical makeup (e.g., grain sizes, surface roughness, and rock abundances) of the Martian surface. The resulting data help scientists understand the planet’s mineral composition and the nature of geological processes operating on the surface. Mars’ surface layer represents a tiny fraction of the total volume of the planet, yet plays a significant role in the planet’s geologic history. Understanding physical surface properties is also very important in determining safe landing sites for spacecraft.
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, after Mercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often referred to as the "Red Planet" because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth.
The rotational period and seasonal cycles of Mars are likewise similar to those of Earth, as is the tilt that produces the seasons. Mars is the site of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano and second-highest known mountain in the Solar System, and of Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System. The smooth Borealis basin in the northern hemisphere covers 40% of the planet and may be a giant impact feature. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and irregularly shaped. These may be captured asteroids, similar to 5261 Eureka, a Mars trojan.

MSL Rover images from SOLs 937-990 NASA RAW files followed by true colour processed versions. See Mars surface as it really looks. High Def images that will change the way you think about the "RED" planet. Also an update on the condition of the now badly damaged Rover wheels. Link to latest RAW images below http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/?s=990&camera;=MAST%5F
For the 3D version see: http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=g_mPAk3h0us The images are taken by the Martian rovers Spirit and Opportunity (property of NASA). They are all parts from larger panorama images. I hope this video gives you an idea of it feels to be on Mars. If you wan't to see more footage, you should check out the full resolution panorama pictures. On this site you can download extremely large pictures up to 650 megabytes in size: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/keywords/qtvr And BTW: In august 2012 the MSL (Mars Science Laboratory) will land on Mars. This rover will have even better camera's than Spirit and Opportunity. I can't wait to see them! PS: I know the rovers on Mars aren't there just to take pretty pictures, but I'm glad they do.

A Titan 3/Centaur rocket launched NASA's Viking 1 spacecraft on a 505-million-mile journey to Mars on Aug. 20, 1975. Viking 2 followed three weeks later. Each mission included both an orbiter and a lander, and all four components accomplished successes. On July 20, 1976, the Viking 1 lander returned the first photograph taken on the surface of Mars. That lander in a region called Chryse Planitia operated until Nov. 13, 1982. The Viking 2 lander operated in the Utopia Planitia region from Sept. 3, 1976 to April 11, 1980. The orbiters sent home images of the entire planet at resolutions of 300 meters or less per pixel.

I have had this image in my "Video To Do" folder for about a week now. I sat and stared at it a couple nights while I was to tired to make a video and the more and more I looked I could see the geometry and destroyed architecture that lays beneath the Martian Soil as well as what has survived the test of time since the end of the civilization who built these structures and artifacts. By no means is this another smoking gun but it adds to the pile of "hmmmm.. that is weird" reaction from people. At least it does for myself. I hope that you download the video as well as check out all the enhanced images on http://www.whatsupinthesky.com and let us know below what you think! What do you see? Much Love! Amid an era of global political suspicion the greatest conspiracy theory of all time casts doubt on what should be the greatest achievement of the age. Did the Apollo 11 astronauts really land on the moon, or was this an elaborate hoax by NASA to satisfy political demands? Bill Kaysing the former head of technical publications for Rocketdyne is considered, by many, to be the father of moon conspiracy theorists. Both he and Ralph René the author of NASA Mooned America set out their stall with all the evidence supporting their theory: Contradicting shadows in photographs, moon walk was a slow motion film, no stars in night sky, flag fluttering in a breeze, lack of Computing power to land the lunar module, can't manipulate camera to take photographs, dust below lunar module should have been d...
