Many of the Syrians who have fled across the border to Lebanon are trying to make a living there, while the conflict goes on at home. But that is creating tension, with a recent poll finding that 80 percent of Lebanese believe Syrians are stealing their jobs. Now the Lebanese government has started a campaign to crack down on Syrian business owners. Nisreen El-Shamayleh has more details from Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.

People in the besieged Syrian town of Madaya are eating "tree leaves" to survive, an activist has told the BBC. Speaking under gunfire, he said that there was "no food" there. On Thursday, the Syrian authorities reached a deal to allow UN officials to deliver aid to the town's starving citizens.

Damascus is a city of relative peace, despite war raging on its outskirts. Many of its citizens are determined to lead normal lives; from opening a bar, running a ballet school or a family bakery, all refuse to give up hope.
Once a capital city famed for its cuisine, culture and hospitality, Damascus has been been changed beyond all recognition. Buildings and communities have been destroyed; hundreds of thousands have fled. Yet rituals of daily life continue in protest against the new normality. One of Damascus' bakeries has fed the city for sixty years, and its owners have no intention of stopping. They look to the future, and as long as they have flour they will bake. Elsewhere, young people drink in a new bar. "Sometimes we don't have water, sometimes we don't have electricity", says the entrepreneurial owner. "But in the end, we are keeping life going". And despite her parents begging her to flee Syria, a determined ballet teacher will not go. "It's not possible to be away from here... I would die slowly", she says. "When the war in Iraq started, we were wondering, 'how do they live in Iraq when there's a war?'". Like many Syrians still weathering life in a war zone, she has found only one answer: "By doing what you love, that's what saves us".

Al Fuheis is now home to more than four thousand Syrian refugee families.
The Sabras have been living in this small, mainly Christian town outside Amman for the past year. They first fled Qatana in Rif Dimashq for the mountainous village of Maloula.
Violence seemed to follow them wherever they went. So they finally packed up and fled their country.
Joseph was working as an electrical engineer before the war started.
In Jordan, he's been unable to find work. The family's nest egg has run out.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Joseph Sabra, Syrian refugee:
"The financial, educational, and housing situation is very hard for us because we don't have any income. We've spent all of our savings. I have a daughter who should be in college but I can't pay her tuition let alone transportation, rent or other bills."
But there's an upside to having fled to Jordan. The family will be among the lucky few who will meet Pope Francis when he visits the kingdom on Saturday (24 May).
Twenty-year-old Marian never expected in her lifetime that she'd have the chance to see the Pope up-close. She's counting down the days before his visit.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Marian Sabra, Syrian refugee:
"I will give him something from Syria and tell him to pray for Maloula to be safe. It's the capital of the Holy Cross. I will ask him to pray for peace and to pray for us."
Roughly 20 thousand Syrian Christians are now residing in Jordan.
The families set to meet the Pope will be escorted by Caritas -- a UNHCR partner. Caritas is assisting 320,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan -- with food, clothes, rent and medical care.
The executive director looks forward to the Pontiff addressing refugees.
SOUNDBITE (English) Wael Suleiman, Executive Director, Caritas Jordan:
"In this situation, we need a voice of hope and for that we are seeing that the visit of Pope Francis maybe it could be a hope for change."
Roughly 20 thousand Syrian Christians are now residing in Jordan.
Around 400 of them gathered for Sunday mass ahead of the Pope's visit.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Joseph Sabra, Syrian refugee:
"Our dream is to see our children safe, to create a future for them, to build the right generation who will carry the name and the heritage of Syria, a generation who will offer a civilization for humanity, a generation who believes in church, who believes in all sects of the world, a generation that doesn't discriminate, a peace loving generation."
A dream they pray their religious leader can help turn into a reality.

Syrian people
The Syrian people (Arabic: الشعب السوري / ALA-LC: al-sha‘ab al-Sūrī; Syriac: ܣܘܪܝܝܢ) are the inhabitants of Syria, and their ancestors who share a common Levantine Semitic ancestry. The term also refers to the citizens of Syria, regardless of ancestry, mother tongue, ethnic identity, or culture.
The cultural and linguistic heritage of the Syrian people is a blend of both indigenous elements and the foreign cultures that have come to rule the land and its people over the course of thousands of years.
The Syrian republic has a population of nearly 17 million as of 2014, in addition to 4 million Syrian refugees. The dominant racial group is the Syrian descendants of the old indigenous peoples who mixed with Arabs and identify themselves as such in addition to ethnic Aramean. The country also includes the following ethnic minorities: Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Greeks, Kurds, and Turkmens.
The Syrian diaspora consists of 15 million people of Syrian ancestry, who emigrated to North America (United States and Canada), European Union member states (including Sweden, France and Germany), South America (mainly in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Colombia), Australia, and Africa.

Al Fuheis is now home to more than four thousand Syrian refugee families. The Sabras have been living in this small, mainly Christian town outside Amman for the past year. They first fled Qatana in Rif Dimashq for the mountainous village of Maloula. Violence seemed to follow them wherever they went. So they finally packed up and fled their country. Joseph was working as an electrical engineer before the war started. In Jordan, he's been unable to find work. The family's nest egg has run out. Damascus is a city of relative peace, despite war raging on its outskirts. Many of its citizens are determined to lead normal lives; from opening a bar, running a ballet school or a family bakery, all refuse to give up hope.
Once a capital city famed for its cuisine, culture and hospitality, Damascus has been been changed beyond all recognition. Buildings and communities have been destroyed; hundreds of thousands have fled. Yet rituals of daily life continue in protest against the new normality. One of Damascus' bakeries has fed the city for sixty years, and its owners have no intention of stopping. They look to the future, and as long as they have flour they will bake. Elsewhere, young people drink in a new bar. "Sometimes we don't have water, sometimes we don't have electricity", says the entrepreneurial owner. "But in the end, we are keeping life going". And despite her parents begging her to flee Syria, a determined ballet teacher will not go. "It's not possible to be away from here... I would die slowly", she says. "When the war in Iraq started, we were wondering, 'how do they live in Iraq when there's a war?'". Like many Syrians still weathering life in a war zone, she has found only one answer: "By doing what you love, that's what saves us".

Al Fuheis is now home to more than four thousand Syrian refugee families.
The Sabras have been living in this small, mainly Christian town outside Amman for the past year. They first fled Qatana in Rif Dimashq for the mountainous village of Maloula.
Violence seemed to follow them wherever they went. So they finally packed up and fled their country.
Joseph was working as an electrical engineer before the war started.
In Jordan, he's been unable to find work. The family's nest egg has run out.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Joseph Sabra, Syrian refugee:
"The financial, educational, and housing situation is very hard for us because we don't have any income. We've spent all of our savings. I have a daughter who should be in college but I can't pay her tuition let alone transportation, rent or other bills."
But there's an upside to having fled to Jordan. The family will be among the lucky few who will meet Pope Francis when he visits the kingdom on Saturday (24 May).
Twenty-year-old Marian never expected in her lifetime that she'd have the chance to see the Pope up-close. She's counting down the days before his visit.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Marian Sabra, Syrian refugee:
"I will give him something from Syria and tell him to pray for Maloula to be safe. It's the capital of the Holy Cross. I will ask him to pray for peace and to pray for us."
Roughly 20 thousand Syrian Christians are now residing in Jordan.
The families set to meet the Pope will be escorted by Caritas -- a UNHCR partner. Caritas is assisting 320,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan -- with food, clothes, rent and medical care.
The executive director looks forward to the Pontiff addressing refugees.

"In this situation, we need a voice of hope and for that we are seeing that the visit of Pope Francis maybe it could be a hope for change."
Roughly 20 thousand Syrian Christians are now residing in Jordan.
Around 400 of them gathered for Sunday mass ahead of the Pope's visit.

"Our dream is to see our children safe, to create a future for them, to build the right generation who will carry the name and the heritage of Syria, a generation who will offer a civilization for humanity, a generation who believes in church, who believes in all sects of the world, a generation that doesn't discriminate, a peace loving generation."
A dream they pray their religious leader can help turn into a reality.
