Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត or "Capital Temple") is a temple complex inCambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. It was first aHindu and later a Buddhist temple. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer:យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol ofCambodia,[1] appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: thetemple-mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early Dravidian architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to representMount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means "Temple City" or "City of Temples" in Khmer; Angkor, meaning "city" or "capital city", is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर).[2] Watis the Khmer word for "temple grounds" (Sanskrit: वाट vāṭa ""enclosure").[3]

Angkor (Khmer: "Holy City") is a region of Cambodia that served as the seat of the Khmer Empire. The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland near Siem Reap. Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, and together, they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture.
- The Bayon temple most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and massive stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. They designed with 49 towers and in each tower decorated with the four faces of the compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokesvara with a combination of king Jayavarman VII's face as well.
- Baphuon temple was the largest temple of the Angkor empire and with it's main tower surmounting the massive sandstone pyramid, said to have been clad in bronze, and its spectacular raised entrance causeway Baphuon must have been a truly impressive sight. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
- Phimeanakas temple is a Hindu temple in the Khleang style, built at the end of the 10th century, during the reign of Rajendravarman (from 941-968), then rebuilt by Suryavarman II in the shape of a three tier pyramid as a Hindu temple. On top of the pyramid there was a tower.
Within the temple itself some beautiful and detailed inscriptions still remain on the walls, and take the nearby paths to lead to ancient bathing pools.
- Elephant terrace and Terrace of the Leper King. The Elephant terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a platform from which to view his victorious returning army. It was attached to the palace of Phimeanakas. The terrace is named for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face. The terrace of the Leper King derives his name from a 15th century sculpture discovered at the site. The statue depicts the Hindu god Yama, the god of death.
It is faced with dramatic bas-reliefs, both on the interior and exterior.

Angkor
Angkor (Khmer: អង្គរ, "Capital City") was the capital city of Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 15th centuries. Angkor was a megacity supporting at least 0.1% of the global population during 1010-1220. The city houses the magnificent Angkor Wat, one of Cambodia's popular tourist attractions.
The word Angkor is derived from the Sanskrit nagara (नगर), meaning "city". The Angkorian period began in AD 802, when the Khmer Hindu monarch Jayavarman II declared himself a "universal monarch" and "god-king", and lasted until the late 14th century, first falling under Ayutthayan suzerainty in 1351. A Khmer rebellion against Siamese authority resulted in the 1431 sacking of Angkor by Ayutthaya, causing its population to migrate south to Longvek.
The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland north of the Great Lake (Tonlé Sap) and south of the Kulen Hills, near modern-day Siem Reap city (13°24′N, 103°51′E), in Siem Reap Province. The temples of the Angkor area number over one thousand, ranging in scale from nondescript piles of brick rubble scattered through rice fields to the Angkor Wat, said to be the world's largest single religious monument. Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, and together, they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture. Visitors approach two million annually, and the entire expanse, including Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom is collectively protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The popularity of the site among tourists presents multiple challenges to the preservation of the ruins.

Angkor (Khmer: "Holy City") is a region of Cambodia that served as the seat of the Khmer Empire. The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland near Siem Reap. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means "Temple City" or "City of Temples" in Khmer; Angkor, meaning "city" or "capital city", is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर).[2] Watis the Khmer word for "temple grounds" (Sanskrit: वाट vāṭa ""enclosure").[3]

The temple was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
- Phimeanakas temple is a Hindu temple in the Khleang style, built at the end of the 10th century, during the reign of Rajendravarman (from 941-968), then rebuilt by Suryavarman II in the shape of a three tier pyramid as a Hindu temple. On top of the pyramid there was a tower.
Within the temple itself some beautiful and detailed inscriptions still remain on the walls, and take the nearby paths to lead to ancient bathing pools.
- Elephant terrace and Terrace of the Leper King. The Elephant terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a platform from which to view his victorious returning army. It was attached to the palace of Phimeanakas. The terrace is named for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face. The terrace of the Leper King derives his name from a 15th century sculpture discovered at the site. The statue depicts the Hindu god Yama, the god of death.
It is faced with dramatic bas-reliefs, both on the interior and exterior.

DON'T go to SUNRISE at ANGKOR WAT!
Location: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia. This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex. Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise. Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up ...

Within the ruins of Angkor Wat is an organism that has taken over entire buildings.
Though it sounds like a science fiction movie, it is infact true.
This ancient part of Cambodian temple is completely overgrown by giant banyan or strangler fig trees.
Though other nearby temples have been cleared of the trees, archaeologists have left these temples as an example.
The fig trees' roots have grown around, over, under, and through this temple.
At places, the roots are so rampant that they are the only thing holding the building up.
In this way, it has become a singular combination of nature and artifice.

This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise.
Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up super early one day an visiting other temples besides Angkor Wat at around 6 a.m.. You could have the amazing temples to yourself while everyone else is fighting at Angkor Wat to snap the best picture of the sunrise.
