How to stay safe in a bushfire

As the hot weather returns Russell Jones from DFES offers three tips to stay safe if your property is under threat.

The fire began near the intersection of Austin Road and Ellis Creek, and is burning in a northerly direction towards the Lewana and Southampton plantations.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said residents should not attempt to return to their properties, and those in their homes should make final preparations to leave or begin actively defending their properties.

"There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is burning in the area and the conditions are changing.

"Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.

"If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear."

DFES urged residents to stay up to date with alerts and warning issued by emergency services.

The warning comes following a smoke alert for the Perth metro and areas of the South West.
